A question of physics

I'm on holiday. The lifts are well dodgy.

Aside from using stairs (10 floors) I am pondering if one fell 10 floors in a free fall lift, would one have a better/worse chance than free falling 10 floors.

Or is this a kilo of feathers/kilo of cement question?

A free falling lift would be accelerating at 9.8 m/s2. As it would be if you were free falling. So it's going to hurt no matter what.

Maybe air resistance would come into play but not from 10 floors.

v2 = u2 + 2as S would be about 30 m

So you would hit the ground at 24 m/s

Ouch

So curtains either way @cakeorwine

*Disclaimer

I did use to find lift physics confusing.

But I think surviving a free falling lift is difficult.

Dragonwindow · 26/08/2023 17:51

I imagine the lift itself might provide some degree of "crumple zone" and absorb a small amount of the impact, so I think it would be marginally less bad inside the lift than a genuine free fall. But on balance - I'd just walk down the stairs.

missmollygreen · 26/08/2023 17:54

Just do a little jump before it hits the ground... easy ;)

How to survive in a falling lift

How to Survive an Elevator Free Fall | Live Science

It's really hard.

Lying on your back might be the best way - but you won't actually feel your back pressing down on the floor as it's falling at the same speed you are.

How to Survive an Elevator Free Fall

Here are a few tips to survive a catastrophic elevator malfunction.

I'm quite bouncy. DS would be toast. Skinny fecker.

Now if he laid on top of you, he might survive. Or get impaled on your ribs or something?

But not sure how you would do that if you were weightless and free falling.

As far as I'm aware Even if a lift cables failed they still have emergence brakes that would engage?

True. This is a very unlikely scenario.

Hawkins009 · 26/08/2023 18:15

For everyone on this thread, if your not keen on a freefall lift don't watch the beginning or near beginning of the film resident evil

Vitriolinsanity · 26/08/2023 18:16

You'd like to think so @Hawkins009

On the other hand, observing the lift engineers who have a sense of futility about them, I'm not ready to bet the farm.

Here's another brain teaser. When one or more people are in a corridor waiting for a lift (that in this case is a lesson in hope over perseverance), why does the next group of people walk up, observe you standing there AND PUSH THE BUTTON!??!!!

Because sometimes the lift button my not have activated, I've been at crossing lights before now and other people were there but they haven't activated the button to cross correctly.

Hawkins009 · 26/08/2023 18:19

So best not to presume that the button has been activated.

Vitriolinsanity · 26/08/2023 18:21

Again true @Hawkins009 unless the button is lit up indicating it has indeed been pressed.

A group of us (strangers) watched this happen today and collectively said (in many languages, but the gist was consistent) "feck me, if only we'd thought of that"

DS was in the lay on the floor camp but debunked it theory, he's going to fling himself at me.

Assuming he's not engrossed in an Insta feed that renders him oblivious to the entire world around him.

I'm certainly a puzzlement but other human's are also puzzling at times

daffodilandtulip · 26/08/2023 18:23

Isn't a dodgy lift more likely to stop working halfway between floors, than just fall off?

Vitriolinsanity · 26/08/2023 18:25

The nice thing is that corridor friendships have formed and there's a very cool vibe. Unless you pitch up and press a lit button. Those feckers are NOT getting the good sunbeds.

I now intend to go on my phone whenever I go into a dodgy lift. If I am going to plummet to my death I would much rather be oblivious.

@Mumofteenandtween in which case you need to follow the feed on Otters.
