To ask for ideas to trick DS onto giving me his work hoodie off so that I can wash it?

DS started an apprenticeship a few weeks ago. He loves it so much that he wears his work hoodie all week and all weekend. He never seems to take it off. Consequently, it’s filthy. His work shirts and trousers are washed and he showers every day, but I have not managed to get the hoodie to wash it. His GF stays over most nights so I don’t want to creep into his room to get it.

So I need your imaginative ideas for how to get his hoodie to wash it. Please keep it lighthearted. Thanks.

Cold hard cash.

give me the hoodie to wash and I’ll give you £10

Aquamarine1029 · 26/08/2023 12:17

You really can't tell your son that his hoodie is filthy and he needs to wash it?

WhiteFire · 26/08/2023 12:20

OP I think too many have missed the light-hearted part of your post

Email his boss. Tell him he must be a fantastic boss as your son loves his new job so much that you can't get his hoodie off him to wash it, and please could he have a second one to wear while you wash the first because the smell is becoming intolerable.

I can't tell if this is a joke. Honestly, don't email his boss! Just don't.

Surely he's aware that clothes need to be washed, or they will smell?

drinkuptheezider · 26/08/2023 12:28

Well, he won't have a gf for long will he unless she is a minger too!

Oh, look, here comes Compo!

Marie2023 · 26/08/2023 12:31

The GF is as bad as him! She seems to wear the same pyjamas and hoodie combo most days. The fact that she can put up with his pigsty of a room says it all, really.

Sometimes the best way to learn is through real life consequences. So if suggesting the hoodie needs washing isn't working (or suggesting he gets a spare one) I'd leave him to it. He can figure it out himself and be responsible for it. I'm equally sure the GF can point it out to him too if she feels bothered by it. He's obviously very proud of his apprenticeship and wants to show that.

As to lighthearted ways to approach with your DS to get him to wash it, that depends on his sense of humour.

Brefugee · 26/08/2023 12:34

YABU. Just leave it. And stop doing his washing anyway - he needs to learn.

If it's too smelly for work, they will let him know. If it's too smelly for you "son, it smells. Wash it"

Tell him to look inside the washing machine drum then just shove him inside and wash him and the hoodie at the same time 🤷🏻‍♀️

Love this idea the best. Grin

Clearly @LakieLady 's suggestions was tongue in cheek, in the spirit of the thread......... the OP has even spelled out this is light hearted, in her OP, for the slow of understanding.

drinkuptheezider · 26/08/2023 12:38

Sorry, I'd be taking the piss, calling them Compo Couple, and playing the Last of the Summer Wine theme every time they are home!
At his age I'd expect him to have awareness. and know what a washing machine is for

This! Clean hoodie and clean son

Ringshanks · 26/08/2023 12:45

This is so nice ! Good on him for loving his apprenticeship and good on you for supporting him . Is it a trade ? I run a joinery/welding workshop and we’ve had some brilliant, interesting and sometimes smelly teenage apprentices over the years .

WeWereInParis · 26/08/2023 12:49

Spill something down him when he's wearing it?

"Oh no, I've spilled my orange juice all over you, let me wash that for you!"

CruCru · 26/08/2023 12:59

Honestly? Please don’t involve the girlfriend - she isn’t responsible for making the son do stuff to please his mum.

Of all the chores I do, laundry is probably the least annoying. A boy doing an apprenticeship is learning to be an adult and it isn’t such a hardship to do his laundry. If you have a washing machine then it can go in the machine on 30C while you get on with something else. I’d be more annoyed if he kept asking for lifts.

glowupqueen · 26/08/2023 13:05

Why do you need to trick him, presumably he's at least 16 years old, tell him he's a minger and to wash the bloody thing...

Problesolving · 26/08/2023 13:06

HakunaMatiłda · 26/08/2023 09:15

Time for a grown up conversation - tell him it will start to smell and he will become the butt of jokes at work.

I agree with this.

LlynTegid · 26/08/2023 13:11

Sorry to read that the GF has such low self esteem.

No more GF visits until it's washed.

Thelnebriati · 26/08/2023 10:55

Ask him if there's a culture at his workplace to not have a clean hoodie as it makes you look like the new kid.

Could be to do with this OP?
Maybe he's trying to fit in and look like one of "the lads"?
Depend on the job I suppose.
Works yard - not a problem.
Reception desk- a problem.

Marie2023 · 27/08/2023 21:32

Update: So I put the heating up to 30 degrees, hoping that he would at least take his hoodie off to sleep. He did. Then I snuck into his room around 4 am, grabbed the hoodie, ran for my life and put it in the washing machine.

When DS woke up, he had a complete meltdown when he realised the hoodie was gone, as he had “nothing else to wear”. And that I was “always stealing [his] clothes.”

He’s calmed down now though. Hoping to get him to agree to allowing us to wash it every Sunday work, before work.

Thanks for entertaining me with your suggestions 😁.
