Is Jenni Hermoso the turning point?

Although I was disappointed that the Lionesses did not win the Women's World Cup I am in awe of Jenni and the unfolding situation in Spain.

I truly think she is inspirational for so many women/girls and has taken time out to re-think her initial acceptance of an abusive situation and then come out to say "she was pressurised to diminish the abuse she felt"

It is a fascinating story unravelling there:

Jenni Hermoso ‘did not consent’ to be kissed by Rubiales

Spain forward rejects FA chief’s claims as ‘categorically false’ as the national women’s team refuses to play until he resigns

I felt so sorry for the Spanish team that their moment got ruined by this shit. And the nation too - government must be furious.

Glad to see the team speaking up.

RightOnTheEdge · 26/08/2023 01:12

I really hope so, she's being so brave speaking out and standing up to him. He is an arrogant, sleazy pig who obviously thinks he's untouchable.

But the amount of comments on the news articles defending him make me despair.
Still so many misogynistic comments about women's football as well.

PaminaMozart · 26/08/2023 01:17

Im deliberately not reading any comments in the newspapers because I can just imagine the misogynistic abuse they are likely to contain, and I simply don’t have the stomach for this shit.

i think Jenni is incredibly brave and I really hope that this will prove to be a watershed. Good to see some of the male players speaking up and voicing their support.

sad though that this will have spoiled the team’s celebrations.

You think she's brave but at the same time can't face the misogynistic comments so you're avoiding them.

Be brave like the woman you admire are. go for it. They're only comments.

Apparently it's not a true quote but it's appropriate "the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good women to do nothing"

PaminaMozart · 26/08/2023 01:43

Im sorry but I’m not getting into a catfight with a bunch of misogynistic assholes at the DM. This fight will be won by the players and officials.

Rubialrs will lose and the players will win.

I'm so pleased he was even picked up on his behaviour. A year or two ago that wouldn't have happened. Now, women can say in front of a global audience: actually, no. That's not right.

I'm not convinced that Hermosa herself is the driver here, but the media. If the cameras had not picked up on the moment, and Twitter hadn't replayed it as much as they did, I don't know that he would be in as much strife.

TokyoSushi · 26/08/2023 04:15

I really hope so, he's a disgrace and I am so sick of this shit.

Willmafrockfit · 26/08/2023 06:17

i was watching it and was shocked that she was kissed on the lips, it was pretty shocking that he was kissing anyway, but it was a step too far

MattDamon · 26/08/2023 07:26

There are years of abuse and general incompetence behind this. 15 players wrote a letter asking for better conditions last year and all but 3 of them have basically been blacklisted by the National Team. The fact that they still managed to win the WC is incredible and very much in spite of their management, not because of them.

The coach (who is best mates with the 'kisser') is a nepo hire. His dad is high up at the federation. Generally considering incompetent and unskilled for the role. He made the young women keep their hotel doors open until 11 PM every night so he could 'check' on them. He did random checks on their bags and shopping (wtf was he looking for??) whenever he wanted.

It's about power to these sick fuckers. Several previous team captains were called up to the WC but they weren't allowed to wear the captain's arm band as 'punishment' for supporting the 15 players mentioned above. When the keeper was given the band she asked if she could give it to one of former captains out of respect. The coach went ballistic and she was banned from the remaining games.

The mental and emotional torture these women have been under has been horrific. Hoping against hope that change is finally coming.

ilovesooty · 26/08/2023 07:30

Good for her.

Many of the assault apologists supporting this man on social media supported Mason Greenwood too.

This behaviour is utterly unacceptable and needs to be highlighted.

That explains so many things.

Jesus.

Really appreciate your explanation of the backstory.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 26/08/2023 08:40

I really hope it is but reading comments on Twitter I very much doubt it. A lot of men seem to think its ok as he was just excited in the moment and if it was a woman doing it to a man footballer there wouldn't be an issue. I've been replying to these men but they just don't get it

Willmafrockfit · 26/08/2023 08:41

all of them he kissed on the cheek, all of them, until this one player who got a kiss on the lips
it was noticeable,
i havent seen it on twitter, or on the news until now although radio 4 have been leading on it

Willmafrockfit · 26/08/2023 08:42

i bet the camera operator was glad that they stuck with the filming!

Iloveavocadoes · 26/08/2023 08:50

As a Spaniard abroad, I'm so glad that camera person caught that moment. We've been accepting misogynist behaviour in our culture for far too long. I'm 55 and I don't know any female friend who has not suffered some sort of sexual abuse at some point in her life. It's disgusting and it has marked all our lives to a certain extend. I hope this marks a difference for the next generation.

Jenni Hermoso has been very brave and she has all my support. As for Rubiales, I hope he's banned for life

AussieCallil · 26/08/2023 09:02

@Iloveavocadoes,

It'll be interesting to see the future impact made by Spain passing into legislation the “Yes means Yes law” last year:

“...consent can only be considered consent when it has been freely manifested through actions that, in accordance with the circumstances, clearly express the person’s wishes”.

Hmm. Rubiales obviously didn't get the memo.

Willyoujustbequiet · 26/08/2023 09:04

Its breaking news now that he has accused her of lying and his federation says it will take legal action against her!. The arrogance is outstanding.

Anyone who has seen the crotch grab video whilst sitting by the Queen of Spain knows what kind of man he is.

Baldieheid · 26/08/2023 09:09

I find his grabbing of her head really disturbing.

He might as well have been forcing her face into his crotch.

So shocking.

Jenni is truly an inspiration.

I think he has brought both the spotlight and huge shame to Spain by his disgusting behaviour.

AussieCallil · 26/08/2023 09:21

Galling for her that the media images beaming round the world aren't of the team's joyous victory, probably one of her and their happiest ever days, but are instead constant slo-mo replays of that incident.

CustomCupboard · 26/08/2023 09:51

I hope it's a turning point.

This assault was captured on camera for the world to see and he has nowhere to hide. He's now squealing that she's lying, threatening legal action etc, as abusers always do when the net is closing in. Textbook.

Once he's gone (he will go), the team can truly celebrate their achievements.

It could be a seminal moment for Spain, football, women's sport and women worldwide.

Well done Hermoso and team.

Do you think we should just ignore it because they won the WC?

"Yes she was assaulted but but let's brush it under the carpet because they won"

I think this is the perfect opportunity for sexual assault in women in sport to be talked about. It couldn't be a bigger platform really with the whole world watching

I've actually been arguing with women saying the same thing!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 26/08/2023 10:17

You wouldn’t think it was a turning point if you were on the other thread, it’s an absolute bin fire. Depressing how many women seem to think this is a non issue.
