To expect a daily reply?

What is the expected response for someone you are meeting up for a date with, during the talking prior? AIBU to expect a reply daily unless it's for a very specific reason?

I don't get what you mean

Romeo2005 · 25/08/2023 13:40

For texting?

OP posts:
Poppyseed14 · 25/08/2023 13:41

Texting what? I don't understand either?

Justcallmebebes · 25/08/2023 13:42

Sorry, you're not making sense. Can you re-phrase?

tooanxious · 25/08/2023 13:43

OP do you mean if you text you expect a reply the same day. Or within a time frame?

If you text the same way you post the poor responder probably doesn't know what to reply to.

Romeo2005 · 25/08/2023 13:44

Have any of you online dated?

OP posts:
Woahtherehoney · 25/08/2023 13:44

Do you mean is the expectation that you should talk daily when you’re dating someone?

if so then usually yes, however it does depend on the person. I’m a texter and love staying in contact but some people just naturally aren’t and don’t need to talk every day to keep a connection. I think it’s something you do need to establish with the other person though so at least you can manage your expectations.

Stressyfab · 25/08/2023 13:45

Yeah I’d expect them to pop a message over daily or let me know if they’re busy? I think I’d assume I’m getting the brush off otherwise

OhYetAnotherBrickInTheWall · 25/08/2023 13:45

Do you mean, a reply (within a day) to a text you’ve sent or daily texts from the date to check in with you?

The first reasonable. The second not so much.

Purditnin · 25/08/2023 13:46

Romeo2005 · 25/08/2023 13:44

Have any of you online dated?

Yup. It’s how I met my husband. And, like pp, I don’t really understand what you’re asking.

Romeo2005 · 25/08/2023 13:44

Have any of you online dated?

I can see why they aren’t. People were trying to get an understanding of what you are texting . Etc

Wilkolampshade · 25/08/2023 13:49

I think OP means she has a date arranged with someone a little way into the future and to arrange this, but also generally, they have been texting each other. How long do we think is a reasonable amount of time to take before responding to a text in these circumstances.

FWIW, I'd say up to 8/9 hours? Generally working day length?

HappiestSleeping · 25/08/2023 13:49

This I would say. 👆

Admittedly I haven't been in the dating scene for a long while, but my general ethos is that text messages (whatever their format) are non urgent methods of communication and can be replied to as and when. Especially if it is general chit chat. OP - I would be wary of coming across as too needy. Expecting too much contact is off putting.

Wilkolampshade · 25/08/2023 13:50

Ahh sorry. Seems I'm wrong.

NuffSaidSam · 25/08/2023 13:53

I got what the OP meant (I think!).

Met online.

Date arranged.

How often should they text between the date being arranged and actually meeting? If OP texts the date should he reply the same day or is it ok to leave replying for a day or more. I'd say he should reply within 24 hours.

OhYetAnotherBrickInTheWall · 25/08/2023 13:55

@HappiestSleeping agree with the too much contact. Any OND who texts me daily gets binned (especially the ‘morning beautiful’ ones. Do one mate, we’ve not even bloody met yet!). It’s a trying to create a faux relationship. Not keen on daily contact after we’ve met TBF, unless we’ve really fallen for each other (which I would say is unlikely after one meeting for me and any bloke who said he had would be waving multiple 🚩🚩🚩).

SecondhandSalute · 25/08/2023 13:57

I don’t think I’d be in touch after the date was arranged and confirmed by both parties, except maybe the day before to say ‘See you tomorrow. Looking forward to it.’

Frankly, I wouldn’t want to commit too much to texting before actually meeting. If someone sent very frequent texts about nothing in particular, specially if in text speak, it would be a major turn-off.

Neverseenbefore · 25/08/2023 13:59

I wouldn’t expect to be in contact before the date, really. The odd text, sure, but every day would put me off.

Romeo2005 · 25/08/2023 14:05

Sorry, me asking if anyone has online dated wasn't an attempt at me being rude or sarcastic. Was a genuine question, as I really thought what I was asking was clear, but obviously not Grin my bad.

So yes, we talk quite a bit and have been (the messages are usually really quite long actually - from both parties, so this isn't a one side thing) and then we have subsequently arranged a date as well. Was just curious if expecting a reply each day is too much? He went on holiday and didn't text back for a week.

OP posts:
flutterby1 · 25/08/2023 14:05

Yeah I expect a daily reply. If you've texted him with a question I'd expect a reply within 30 mins or an hour tbh, we all know we are on our phones we all can see our phones most of the time, there are exceptions if you're working or on a night out, day trip etc but you can always sneak 20 seconds to reply.

Can't stand people that try to play hard to get mind games by not replying.

One or two texts a day is probably enough

UsingChangeofName · 25/08/2023 14:11

I think this is very individual.

Personally I think it a bit strange to be expecting daily messages - especially if one person is on holiday.
Like a pp, I would find it a bit odd to be getting daily messages before even meeting someone.

PinotPony · 25/08/2023 14:40

If you've not been on the date yet, I think it's a bit soon for daily messages. People are busy and not glued to their phones, especially on holiday.

Why don't you just mention it when you see him in person? Easier to agree how often you'll check in with each other than getting all worked up about the lack of response.

KinooOrKinog · 25/08/2023 16:17

If he didn't reply for a week then I'm afraid he's just not that into you. No-one goes on holiday and doesn't take/use their phone. And before anyone pipes up with 'oh but roaming charges', he could have sent one reply saying - text you when I get back.

Duvetdayforme · 25/08/2023 17:00

You should have posted your update as the OP 😂

No fucking way! He didn’t text you for a whole week on holiday? No photo of the beach/sights/anything?

Bin him.

Romeo2005 · 25/08/2023 17:03

That's what I mean like I get he's probably not that into me then as that's what I was thinking but that's why I was trying to gauge what's acceptable for a response time.

No, he sent me some photos when he came back
