What are all pensioners getting another £300 this winter??

1000 replies

F0RBIDDENFRUIT · 25/08/2023 13:12

They are amongst the richest people in the country, yes there are poor pensioners but a lot of them are way richer than anyone else.

£300 more for energy, none of the old people I know need this, they all have more money than their children.

Just because they vote, that is the only reason they can be doing this.

People whinging about £2bn a year to attempt to make sure pensioners can keep warm. Honestly. It is a drop in the ocean.

(Just realised someone else said the same thing!)

Edited

Great minds think alike. I think some are not realising that these same pensioners are providing a lot of unpaid care to grandchildren and disabled children as well. One of my neighbours is 86 and cares for her 53yr old disabled son. So she has additional costs. My next door neighbour takes care of five grandchildren- it was three school age but they’ve just added newborn twins. They need a warm home for sure!

State pension doesn’t really take into account the extra costs that some pensioners shoulder with unpaid care commitments they have. £300 for utility bills is a drop in the ocean and I think it would be a waste of money to means test it.

Yeh same here know loads of over 65, many still working FT higher tax earners but not paying tax

Dont know any poorer 65-90s, all are wealthier than people i know of under 45 (Peterborough).

Bonkers. Almost like MPs are all nearly pensioners themselves... oh yes, they are

What do you mean they’re not paying tax? Are you saying they are illegally evading tax? How so?

Why do people keep posting these articles?

The levels of disinformation are astonishing.

A pension is a function of your contributions over a specific length of time.

In Europe, their contributions are 2-3x larger than the UK (much higher social security contributions in Europe vs NI) and they also have to work longer (35-40 years) to qualify for a full one.

So no, you do not deserve a similar pension as Europeans because you never paid in enough contributions over your lifetime.

It is that simple.

Fair enough, but can you provide the details of the contributions and eligibility for those countries that pay a better pension than the UK, or a link to details?

You've really brought into the brainwashing haven't you? 'Pensioners are among the richest people in the country... ' 🙄

Let's just abolish everything except the very basic state pension. I am sure you will all be glad of this when you are old.

I’d be very surprised if the state pension even exists when I’m old tbh

Lifeomars · 25/08/2023 16:40

I am retired, I have my state pension and a small NHS pension and I pay income tax, full council tax and of course like all of us VAT on anything new I buy. Last winter was a real struggle, I was frequently cold, it cost me well over £200 a month to run the heating for an hour am and an hour pm from December though to March. I wore thermals, a hat and fingerless gloves in the house and had a heated throw which was a godsend. I manage, but have been hit hard by the increases in food and energy costs as have so many others. So why am I not a "wealthy pensioner"? Well, money was very tight when I was bringing up my child by myself, paying a mortgage and all the other bills by myself so I could only start saving much later in life. I put a bit by but am now having to dip into that just to get by. I had some grim and depressing days last Winter even with fuel allowance and the monthly top up. When I get the £300 I will be paying it straight over to Octopus, and maybe allowing myself an extra hours heating at the weekend. For perspective I also feel for young families and indeed anyone else who is being battered by cost of living. We need radical change in this country.

KarmaStar · 25/08/2023 16:41

Stop with the judgement!
A sweeping comment, there are poor pensioners....yes there are thousands trying to live by choosing between eating and paying bills.
You are horribly out of order with your post.

Enriquetta · 25/08/2023 16:42

People do understand that pensions are taxed as income?

babyproblems · 25/08/2023 16:42

It should be means tested, I agree op.
What you really mean is that they vote Tory. Statistically you are absolutely correct and of course our sleazy government know this very well.

3rd and 4th children are a luxury you choose if you can afford to have them. Getting old isn’t optional.

On who voted Conservative in the last election... yes they clean up with pensioners

yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/12/17/how-britain-voted-2019-general-election

The problem is that is a percentage of people who voted, is there anywhere that shows numbers? I have looked but I can't see anything. Or how many vote? I know 80 and 90 year olds who don't, disabled and don't want to vote by post. So although 67% of over 70s who voted, voted Conservative that doesn't really tell us how significant that is, it might be that fewer over 70s voted Conservative than under 70s. In fact isn't that likely given the population of 18 to 69 year olds must be more than the over 70s?

I might be wrong, I'm not great at statistics.

My parents definitely need every penny, my Mum still works a few hours she’s 78. My in laws are rich and don’t need it but take it. It’s mad

Millions of pensioners live in relative poverty. Just because you don't know any, it doesn't mean they don't exist.

EffortlessDesmond · 25/08/2023 16:46

Anybody in the UK right now aged 60+ has no valid reason whatsoever for being classed as 'poor' and requiring any form of state welfare.

Would you like to explain this to my 88yo mother? Trained SRCN, and worked until she was 78. On the old state pension scheme, because of her age, she receives £156 pw plus pension credit to bring her up to the standard pension rate. She gets by, but the winter fuel credit does alleviate her worries about putting on the heating if the temperature drops.

By the way, only the oldest pensioners (over 75) still get free TV licenses and only if they get pension credits. The rest continue to pay like everyone else.

@Judashascomeintosomemoney once youre over a certain age you dont pay NI

At age 67 you save 12.5% when working compered to person age 18-65

So any work anyone does after age 66 is worth more

My Dad is 67 and is self employed on around £100k pa works FT he donates this gvmt money says its insulting and should start at age 80? Loqds of people working now 65-75.

If they’re ‘rich’ they’ll be paying income tax, or dividend tax, or corporation tax, or VAT, or whatever other tax, as appropriate, at exactly the same rate that you are…

I'm still paying tax, only recently retired and it was NI that stopped. I think it stops when you hit pension age which has varied over the last few years.

Because they need the heating on more than others, not all old people are rich infact the majority I know are on state pension.

You can enjoy rolling in dosh when you retire 🙄

Well part of that is probably because we tend to know the people who live in our neighbourhood who tend to be in similar financial health as ourselves. So the pensioners you know will by and large have an income close to your income as a FT worker, and if a family, FT dual income household.

Another part of why you may not know pensioners who desperately “need” £300 for heat is that they tend to not survive the winter. Around 8,000 die every year due to inability to afford heating. 8,000 a year, every year. Add that to other deaths only contributed to by lack of heating rather than directly caused by it and really the needy pensioner doesn’t have a very good life expectancy.

It happens because many people who save money by not putting on the heat when younger mistakenly think they can get away with it as they age. What might make you shiver under a duvet and feel uncomfortable as a 50yr old can kill you as a 70yr old.

I honestly think that in a civilised country we’d ensure no cold homes in the winter.
