To think people with money would never understand

I live in an affluent area, we have a nice, but average house, I’m from a middle class background (I think!) but one parent from a working class background, all very down to earth.
I have a good job, degree educated, but it’s not a well paying job. In the holidays I supplement by doing some childcare/babysitting. I often babysit for wealthy people. Just being in their homes and everything about the way they are and the things they have is so different.
They would have no idea, for example that we live basically month to month and these little nights working for them pay some small bills or afford a small treat for my dc…to them it would be nothing.
Even the things they fill their fridges with and the sun creams and toiletries used (not snooping! Some on tbe coffee table, on the toilet etc)
I don’t know..I always feel less of an adult when I leave and wonder why my life didn’t go like this and theirs did

I am a chartered accountant. So unless I left my home I am not making big bucks. We have been over this. Teachers in northern towns get paid more than most private sector professional...

Someone else said the same thing. Especially in the last 10 years.

Well leave your home then. What’s the problem? Your entitlement to a well paid job in your town? You aren’t owed that, I moved countries so no sympathy there

Betse84 · 26/08/2023 19:04

You’re assuming this was all given to them. The people that have that for the most part have also worked very hard and made sacrifices and lived paycheck to paycheck. It’s shallow of you to assume only those without a lot of money have struggled.

Mummy and daddy did not give us a penny since we were 18. So what did he use to pay for driving lessons?? A car? Insurances? No public transport in semi rural Cheshire. 1 bus ever 1hr and only between 10 am and 4pm.

The privilege of some of you.

I financially supported my mum and my sister since I was 21. The privilege of YOU/your brother who had student loan AND a bursary and used it for driving lessons and a car!!! 🙈

I am a chartered accounting. I spent 4 years working and training. I moved all over the country for work but it's a hard life being young and female in some unknown town. It really sucks. So I moved back to my home area and work here is sparse. I applied to loads of jobs and signed up to loads if agency. 12 months ago the phone would ring every day for work. Now it rings twice a week. There is less work about.

My brother has a job now but it's not as a teacher which is the point.

Sorry but the fact you cannot see eastern European labour has driven down wages in poor towns clearly point to a place of privilege. You clearly have never been to a food packing factory where no one speaks any English and they force you to live in the owners rental property. 10 to a house and take the "rent" out your wages before they pay you. You end up on like £3 an hour. Do you even know this goes on?

This is the problem mums net has no diverse opinions. Its all middle class left wing remain supporting middle age women. It's an eco chamber....

Telling me they got good job by hard work and house in the 80s/90s/ early 2000s so why haven't you type! Maybe if you had not voted for Tony Blair. If you want to blame my attitude its tony blairs education system that created me. Started school under labour and left school under labour. Lol

@WhaleSharkBootySweat This is exactly it, all the professions that help
others are so badly paid, I should have just gone into something solely to earn money and make no difference to society. Those sort of people get paid so much more, how is it fair

Oh piss off. I do think public sector workers should be paid more, but this is such a simplistic way of looking at the world. I work in the private sector with a decent salary and I think my job makes a difference and is for the general good of society. I completely support key workers and their fight for pay, but please don't act like you're some sort of do-gooding altruistic martyr for your choice of job, while anyone with an above average income is some kind of fat cat leeching off society.

LadyHelenaJustina · 26/08/2023 19:21

Just because someone has money now, it doesn’t mean they have always had it. I’m financially stable now, but spent years in an abusive relationship, with bailiffs knocking on the door. I appreciate what I have, but know that it could all be taken away.

Bully for you.

My brother is disabled and unable to work or drive, so WTAF are you spouting on about?

I paid for my children's driving lessons the same way I paid for their swimming lessons - because they are important life skills. I paid for my own driving lessons with my Saturday job, and I never had swimming lessons.

You sit there saying that your brother blew £17K++ over the course of 10 months and then bitch about my child spending theirs sensibly, and purchasing a car to be flexible regarding work - don't compare them to your lazy entitled brother.. Are you stupid or what? Your bloody brother had exactly the same opportunity. My child didn't need driving lessons - passed their test while still at home. The fucking cheek of you!!!

If someone did this I'd wonder if they had a cash flow issue themselves tbh!

Bank transfers should be pretty much instant so no excuse for them not to have done it on the spot

This.

I assume you mean "echo" chamber, as an "eco" one would be something totally different.

You are actually clueless. There are far, far more jobs available to young people now than there were when I graduated. Therefore, I moved to London for work. I didn't sit on my hole bemoaning my fate.

My parents had manual jobs too.

OP I just want to say I hope everything works out for you. The country you live in has one of the most challenging economic situations right now - one of lowest minimum wages in all of Europe and steeply rising living costs in Western Europe. I can understand how on a teachers salary it is very tough to manage- so many of the population struggling so much - it’s a lovely country but times are hard. I’m sorry so many people are giving you a hard time on this post - until they live it maybe not the best to judge. I hope you manage to get your move back to UK and things work out for you and the family. Yes it’s not great in UK always either - but definitely much more manageable. Good luck!

@Playingintheshadow

Your child passed there driving test whilst still at home?? You paid for it. We had to pay for our own and the insurance. My parents had no money either. My dad was injured at work by the chemicals used. He died at 55. Not long after my 18th birthday. You have no idea what people go through.

He did not blow 17k in 10 months. He didnt get a job after the course so applied for some that were available and then got zero hours contracts and did day supply where they call you up on the morning as someones called in sick. Then you have to drive there and get paid by the lesson. He got paid £15 per lesson so thats £75 for a full day. He didnt get a job everyday. We had to help my mum with the rent as well.

So 17k soon goes when you are only getting maybe 3 days a week work and going to interview. He tried for 2 years to get a stable teaching job. He had a few 6 week ones.

You really have no idea what hardship people face without the accumulate wealth and opportunity there parents have. I know you struggled but you have forgotten what is like. I am sorry but calling me lazy and saying I need to get off my ass. I have tried for 10 years and I am broken. There is nothing in this country for us anymore. Nothing and we are forgotten about. So having a British passport is not privilege (fyi I dont have one as I dont to abroad)

Nevermind though as you are all struggling and are so poor.

Don't confuse "this country" with the town where you live.
There's plenty. It might not be on your doorstep but there's work out there.

pollymere · 26/08/2023 20:14

Before I went into teaching, I had a job that required long days, weekends and being on call.

I know teaching does but you can usually be at home if you need to be. The fact you are providing childcare may be because they don't have the time to spend with their kids. And you never know how much debt people are in either...

Username138492 · 26/08/2023 20:17

That's for sure a you problem in that scenario, you need to advocate for yourself if it's not ok then say something.
'rich' people are often just normal people who fully understand life but you do get the odd few who live in a different world but then to be fair that happens in all walks.

This is not addressed at you or at your brother but specifically at this poster who keeps moaning how hard her and her brother life is (with a large bursary) and saying we are all out of touch middle classes: I’m just pointing it out as an immigrant (who is indeed now middle class/upper middle class) that she may also be out of touch because as a British born with ability to get bursaries she and her brother are very much privileged compared to many people she cites as examples (like me). Who is out of touch here?

Having British passport is not a privilege because you don’t go abroad? - LOL what a daft thing to say
having British passport = having British citizenship
this means you can be in the country in the first place, have a right to work, use public funds (NHS, benefits etc), have a right to get student loans AND pay very different rate for university as compared to non-citizens. And you went to decent schools (compared to something like Ethiopia), speak native English etc
it is a huge privilege which people from many countries do not have

Well, actually, within reason people ought to be able to live, work, have families and retire in their home areas if they so wish. Sustainable communities are generally a beneficial thing.

Missingpop · 26/08/2023 20:44

For fucks sake; do you feel better now you’ve made yourself look a double c**t for actually writing it down & posting it.😂😂😂 there’s so much shit going on in the world & all you can do argue over where to park a fucking car!! Grow up & sort yourselves out🤣🤣🤣🤣

Bacon88 · 26/08/2023 20:45

@Seagullchippy

Thankyou

@Justneedagirlname Its absurd to say I have privilege because I was born in the UK vs another country. Saying I have access to all these opportunities. Being born here doesnt give you access. Your kids had access because of the privilege you created. But you created that privilege in a generation where life was easier. To say there are more jobs now than when you graduate is ridiculous. How come we have a much lower social mobility now than then?. Also how come working clas white boys have the poorest outcomes??? Only 35% of my school passed 5 GCSEs so to say I had a good school is bs and it is unfairly poor compared to your kids education...

We dont all get the same opportunities in this country.

Tiredbehyondbelief · 26/08/2023 20:46

I am really concerned about your lack of funds for a rainy day. I come from a very poor background , my husband from a middle class family. It took me years to learn to put a bit of money aside. I used to get really upset with my husband's stingy ways. I know kids could be demanding, I have 2 teenagers at home. However ours are used to me saying that even the richest man on the planet can't afford everything he wants. Please do have another look at your finances and see if could make cuts somewhere to enable to stop going to wealthy people's homes. For example we gave up our car which is a pain however we manage. I work as NHS midwife, my husband works part-time in retail for health reasons. Our mortgage is £1400 a month.

You’re assuming this was all given to them. The people that have that for the most part have also worked very hard and made sacrifices and lived paycheck to paycheck. It’s shallow of you to assume only those without a lot of money have struggled.

This is actually a myth. Most extremely wealthy people have not clawed their way out of poverty. The vast majority started out from a position of privelege. Affluent areas, good schools, comfortable at the least parents, the right networks and connections. Gifted house deposits, inheritance. No doubt some have worked hard, but for most it wouldn't have been enough without the head start.
I'm not saying there aren't some completely self made people who've come up from poverty, threads like these are a magnet for them. But success from adversity is mainly just a fairytale to motivate the poor and although the wealthy to pretend they got there solely on merit.

You're right though OP, some people have no clue whatsoever.

So you caught that as well! I said DUH after reading several.

@Bacon88 you have obviously decided that you have it worse than OP and therefore negociate every single thing she says. You simply refuse to understand her situation. If and when you want to talk about your life, your job, your husband's job....why don't you just start a post of your own I wonder.

ExpatAl · 26/08/2023 22:10

Op, you should have said where you’re based straight off. Context is all. It’s poor form for the client to not have cash ready. I would watch out for that happening again. It’s not that rich people don’t get it. This particular person didn’t.
