To think people with money would never understand

I live in an affluent area, we have a nice, but average house, I’m from a middle class background (I think!) but one parent from a working class background, all very down to earth.
I have a good job, degree educated, but it’s not a well paying job. In the holidays I supplement by doing some childcare/babysitting. I often babysit for wealthy people. Just being in their homes and everything about the way they are and the things they have is so different.
They would have no idea, for example that we live basically month to month and these little nights working for them pay some small bills or afford a small treat for my dc…to them it would be nothing.
Even the things they fill their fridges with and the sun creams and toiletries used (not snooping! Some on tbe coffee table, on the toilet etc)
I don’t know..I always feel less of an adult when I leave and wonder why my life didn’t go like this and theirs did

Well it's alright for you to say graciously finish the interview. with your one should phase you are clearly very middle class. My brothers had an agency job in a factory so he only got paid when he worked (zero hours contracts) so whilst he was trying to get teaching jobs he worked to get money as my parent cant fund us. He did supply work as well so yeah graciously finish the interview and not get paid for a days work???

Where does "one" get the money from to go to all these interviews all over the country?? Its £300 to go to London and £30 to our nearest city? I think you fail to understand how people with no accumulate wealth cannot get to these interviews especially when your parents cannot fund you. I left school at 18 because of it and did a £2.30 an hour apprentice...

Out of touched again.

Finally yes he was entitled to a job as he did a school direct that said you are guaranteed a job if you pass the course but they basically went back on the contract and went what you going to do sue us??. We have no wealth to challenge the system. Can you not see this!!

The working class in this country are treated like shit. You are litteraly the microcosm of this post. "Rich" people with money do not what it is like. Problem is it's the rich people moaning!

Catch yourself on with your flimsy excuses! My DC had to get a flight for every interview and funded it themselves!! Sometimes a couple of times a week!!

@TizerorFizz

He has a 1st class from Warwick in maths.... The problem is I live in a poor area of Cheshire and all the teachers come from stoke. Liverpool and Manchester to teach here as it is nicer than inner city and they have experience so any jobs rarely go to a NQT. My brother got zero jobs in Cheshire. He had a few in Wales but that's hard because they are welsh speakers and he isn't. Stoke was where most the jobs were but they had issues with funding and made like music and drama teachers teach maths to fill the vacancies and cut cost. Unfortunately lots of people on here struggle with less densly populate industrial English town life. They are in populated, upmarket areas and mainly in the south.

So yeah before you accuse my brother of being a shit teacher. Listen up...

So what did your brother do with the large bursary he would have received? My DC got £26k in 2019. Plus there are huge incentives paid to schools to hire NQTs, and they're cheaper for schools, so he should have been snapped up!

There's something about this that just doesn't (pun totally intended!) add up...!

@HoppingPavlova

Can you not see the issue in what you just said.?? The working class of the uk have had to compete with the likes of you from around the world that come here and work for cheap then go back home with all the money you make. Yet our own kids have no hope as the money here is buys you less then your own country??

You have taken a job from someone who was born here and lives in a poor part of the UK. Do not give me that "British people do not want to work shit". That's a lie the govement uses to hide the facts.

You have taken jobs over the years in areas there are not many because you work for less. It's the reasons my husbands job is so lower paid because of all the cheap eastern European labour. You do know companies are allowed to pay 30% less to a foreign worker they being over if they cannot fill the job in the uk??. So they deliberately do not take a UK worker.!!

OMG - did you actually type that??

You're so bigoted. Not to mention, equally balanced - chip on each shoulder!!

Cosyblankets · 26/08/2023 16:36

Bacon88 · 26/08/2023 11:54

@Cosyblankets

Well why stop him from leaving then. They would of just let him go. They argued for a bit then admitted she was the interviewers daughter. It was like the hr/ admin girl who told him as he was leaving. She was really apologetic but when you call them out unless they lie what else are they going to say?? He does have a 1st maths degree so hes not an idiot!!

You think he had a chance at that job??

I've been on both sides of the interview panel for teaching jobs. I've been through the process several times. I've also left an interview because i felt the school wasn't for me on two occasions. There was a discussion about it but they did not try to stop me leaving. It's fairly common for a candidate to withdraw. I've never heard of a school trying to stop someone leaving.

You make some stupid assumptions here. I’m not even from this country originally and was very poor growing up, yet I don’t make excuses. British people already won the lottery of having a British passport as far as I’m concerned, compared to the large parts of the world. There are people who have it much worse.
re interview: he is already in the interview and missing work. How walking out and saving 30 mins is going to change anything?
re jobs: when there is a will there is a way. You say he just DOESNT want to look further, not that he can’t afford it.
and yes, people who work in private sector apply to many more jobs (15 is nothing) and don’t expect a job. He is entitled and so are you. I don’t care what the agency told him, it’s not an excuse to sit and moan - he’s still not owed a job

Cosyblankets · 26/08/2023 16:50

Bacon88 · 26/08/2023 11:41

@Cosyblankets the difference between me and you is you are old working class. Teachers are not working class. My parents were working class and you are probs the same age as them. So whilst you were a teacher my dad was an railway worker (after it was privatised) . So teacher vs railway worker is middle class vs working class.

I am an accountant and my husband a factory packer. So what is that. Upper working class household. Your kids are now middle class...

Being working class today is far harder than it was when you upped your self. That's what people cannot accept.

My dad worked in a factory. Your dad was a railway worker.
I'd say that's a similar level.
The biggest difference between you and me is I am not carrying an enormous chip on my shoulder and i don't have a sense of entitlement.
I was once an internal candidate....i didn't get the job. I was a bit miffed about that for a while but he was more experienced than i was at the time and i was a fully grown adult so i accepted it for what it was.

Justneedagirlname · 26/08/2023 16:52

Bacon88 · 26/08/2023 15:10

@TizerorFizz

You have really annoyed me how out of touch you are and saying you do not believe me. Look around you love. Loads of people have 1st from a top uni. There is not enough good jobs to go round.

I have another brother who did a degree and he did move for a job on a grad scheme. He is doing well. So from nothing to have 1 out of 3 kids to "make" it is good going. It really doesnt work out for everyone. How is that hard for you to get?? I moved for a job but ended up back in my area as wages didnt pay my rent as rents were higher. Starting teacher salaries were like 24k. Min wage for under 25s was like 16k at the time. Bit of difference! As an apprentice it was 7k. So yeah not easy to just move for all these "top" jobs...

What I will agree with is that a degree, even a first, is not enough and that’s what people from working class may not realise
one needs soft skills, ability to come across well in interviews, ability to write CV well, being able to demonstrate they will be a good worker and team
player (and not a PITA). Ideally some internship experience AND cultivate networking when they study (last bit is definitely what lots of people don’t understand). However this is mostly teachable and plenty of free resources on that everywhere.

and lastly if he’s really struggling to break into teaching with a first in math from Warwick, maybe he should consider other careers which are better paid anyway (finance, accounting, quants etc). Investment banks love math graduates (those who work hard and don’t moan all the time, mind you).

Bacon88 · 26/08/2023 17:32

@Cosyblankets

We have been over this... are a different generation. Your dad is as old as my granddad. You are as old as my dad. I am your child!!!

Why is generational differences so difficult for the you lot to understand. You lady school 7 year before was born. Hahaha

Bacon88 · 26/08/2023 17:34

@Justneedagirlname

I am a chartered accountant. So unless I left my home I am not making big bucks. We have been over this. Teachers in northern towns get paid more than most private sector professional...

Someone else said the same thing. Especially in the last 10 years.

TizerorFizz · 26/08/2023 17:43

@Bacon88 NO qualified maths teacher doesn’t get a job. Why doesn’t he work in the poor secondary school then? This is clearly the biggest load of rubbish. Any maths teacher, NQT or not, can get a job. They will probably be the only applicant in many areas. There’s more going on here and it’s nothing to do with class.

Bacon88 · 26/08/2023 17:44

@Playingintheshadow

The money was used for the fees at 9k. Then the other 17k to live??

What else did he use for rent and food??

GRex · 26/08/2023 17:48

Bacon88 · 25/08/2023 01:59

@PrinnyPree

What you have said is pure bs. I am a chartered accountant in the north of England. Currently struggling to get work. I have been hired for 14 weeks since December. My husband works in a packing factory...

Everything you just said about caring professionals and the finance industry is a delusion. In the uk teachers earn more than I do. Retire younger and have better pensions. Also Mat pay. I am pregnant and will get zero pay. Teachers get so much mat money is ridiculous.

Sorry your painted ignorance as if you knew so much. 😂

You should get maternity allowance in your situation, see if it fits: https://www.gov.uk/maternity-allowance/what-youll-get#:~:text=You'll%20get%20%C2%A3172.48,for%20up%20to%2039%20weeks..

Maternity Allowance

Maternity Allowance is paid to pregnant women who do not get Statutory Maternity Pay - rate, eligibility, apply, form MA1

It's always someone else's fault
But we're the ones out of touch apparently

Bacon88 · 26/08/2023 17:52

@Playingintheshadow

Mummy and daddy did not give us a penny since we were 18. So what did he use to pay for driving lessons?? A car? Insurances? No public transport in semi rural Cheshire. 1 bus ever 1hr and only between 10 am and 4pm.

The privilege of some of you.

Bacon88 · 26/08/2023 17:54

@GRex

I do not qualify for mat allowance as you have to work so many weeks as an employee. If you are self employed you get like £29 a week. So yeah lower rate mat allowance for 8 weeks or something.

Bacon88 · 26/08/2023 17:56

@TizerorFizz

But loads of people do not get jobs. The internet is full of it. You just wont look outside of your privilege.

I challenge you next time you are in a shop ask them what degree they did. It might shock you.

WhisperingHi · 26/08/2023 17:57

noworklifebalance · 24/08/2023 23:06

But HOW would they know if you “walked out of the door breezily saying it was fine to pay by transfer”??

Isn't it just common sense though, that someone who babysits, who has a family and another job, is doing it because they have to. And therefore they clearly aren't rolling in it?!

It's common decency to check how someone likes to be paid in advance and make you sure you do. Even better, make sure they're paid on the day, not three days later. It's ignorant.

angela99999 · 26/08/2023 17:58

squirelnutkin11 · 24/08/2023 21:31

you are well educated so you could have chosen a more lucrative job.../career..and still could.

I do sympathise @Canfeelamozzieflyingaround, I don't think people realise how their everyday life, spending and things that they take for granted appear to someone who has less. Improving your life can feel out of reach. And it's awful that she didn't pay you on time, just mean.
But yes, there's always something you could do about it. My DIL didn't have further education (or any training beyond 18) and is very working class but pushes herself hard and has just landed a very well paid job for a posh financial company "because she gave a ballsy interview". I really admire her, she's achieved so much from a standing start but is also still a very grounded, kind person.

Well fuck me, it cost a lot to keep him! @Bacon88!!

It's a load of bollocks anyway. Student finance covers the fees. The bursary is separate and I know that as a fact, as my DC got it. Lived away from home and they never better off in their life! Even bought a car! But then of course middle class mummy and daddy had paid for the driving lessons 🙄

Your brother could have got off his backside and worked to pay for his driving lessons, like plenty of other people do.

You're just full of excuses. Get off your arse and make an effort in your life and stop whinging. You are far more entitled than anyone else in this thread. Nothing is your fault yet you won't make any effort to improve your own lives.

You keep bitching about people's age too. You're already a grumpy old woman so Christ only knows what you will be like when you are old. Still bitter too I guess.

TizerorFizz · 26/08/2023 18:12

@Bacon88 As I said, no one with a first in maths from Warwick cannot get a job. They have every opportunity. The golden hello was obviously spent unwisely. That is significantly more than others get.

There are schools crying out for maths teachers. There a numerous jobs for maths grads, as others have said. A friend’s son did struggle with a 2:2 from Cambridge in maths but got a good job in the end.

I would have to agree that what is written is pure right-wing objectionable bile.

Oblomov23 · 26/08/2023 18:13

I wouldn't be shocked at all. I've wider family members in that situation. One did a degree, wanted to be a teacher but wouldn't leave home/her boyfriend. So she married him and has 2 kids, doesn't work. Another took a degree away from home, moved home, got BF, got married, has never worked anywhere but retail. That was a choice they made, because they wouldn't push themselves to do anything else.

Worked with someone with a Masters, also wanted to be a teacher but wouldn't leave mummy and daddy to go away to do PGCE. Only left home when they got married.

I've employed a PhD, professional musician, engineers etc in the past on temp posts as receptionist.

The degree is only a part of the puzzle. You have to have the drive to succeed. All of the aforementioned temp workers did.

If your brother has the same attitude you do - there's your answer.

Lollipop81 · 26/08/2023 18:48

Erm stop been so jealous and get over it 😂😂 having money and being comfortable doesn’t mean they are happy. You have no idea what people are going through or have been through regardless of whether they have money or not. You sound very judgy. I have nothing monetary wise, I am a single mom with 2 boys, but I am rich really. My boys are amazing and so is my life. Stop seeing life in money terms and enjoy the riches you have. You are making yourself unhappy. Yeah money would be great but we don’t have it, get over it 😂

Iwant2stayanon · 26/08/2023 18:50

It feels like a non issue to me. If you want what they have then train and do a different job. We don’t live an extravagant life but I have nice skin care products etc. I come from a very poor background, it just made me work harder to get what I have. I don’t see why you would envy others, maybe you need to focus more on yourself?

Crapsummer2023 · 26/08/2023 18:53

@Bacon88
Wowzers someone has the entire Mcains chip factory on their shoulder let alone a chip, ‘I’m working class! I’m working class, I’m working class!’

For fucks sake it’s embarrassing. You and your brother need to sort your attitudes out. Also blathering about Eastern Europeans taking jobs for lower pay. Absolute bollocks. I can 100% tell you are one of those numpties who voted Brexit to fuck over the middle class you hate so much. Now that’s gone sideways and there’s even less cash to go around, you’re still angry and would probably vote for a Super Brexit to spite people more given the chance.

I’m sick of some ‘working class’ people like you and resent the politicians of this country are bending over backwards to enable your petty grievances rather than telling you to get off your lazy arse, stop looking for excuses, stop blaming others and being spiteful of others who are doing well and watch and learn how you can make improvements in your lives.

Instead every announcement and policy appears to be aimed at placating the bullshit of people like you.

Yours, someone who grew up in one of the poorest wards in England and is now one of the middle class who’s apparently suffering memory loss and doesn’t know what it’s like to be poor.
