My DS4 is getting his first proper haircut tomorrow and I have an idea in my head what to ask for but I can’t find any pictures online. He has a bit of a curl to his hair so I’m wanting it shorter back and sides and longer on top BUT I don’t want it very short or shaved like the peaky blinders fashion. Can any one help please?

Ask for a short scissor cut but a bit longer on top? - that way they will only use the clippers to tidy up the edges/not at all if he doesn't like them. (Assuming that you are going to a barbers)

There is probably a limit to how much of a 'style' they'll be able to do on a four-year-old as they aren't always the best at keeping still for precision snipping! But I would ask them to do a short back sides, a bit longer on the top, and scissors only, no clippers.

Is there an actor/character who has something similar to what you’re after? Perhaps you could find a pic online to show the barber? ‘Scissors only’ is the most important thing to say. But I agree - it’s an absolute minefield. All our local barbers just churn out 100’s of the Peaky Blinders cut. Same for everybody. It’s minging and suits precisely no one imo.

Yes it’s a barbers and we’ve not been before as DS refused and I knew he wouldn’t sit still for long, I’ve been doing it myself at home but it takes forever and I’m far from a hairdresser! I will definitely ask for no clippers then, I think DS would be scared of them anyway. The only ones I can find online have shaved sides.

Once the back and side length is done with scissors I get them to cut the hair on top from the crown, forward, towards the fringe. Then can take extra length off if needed
Otherwise it sits heavy on top of DS hair. His is very thick and also has a flick/curl to the ends
They usually tidy up the missed bits with clippers
