To be panicking?

Keep receiving letters from three telling me I owe them money for a missed payment. I only use PAYG so this is not possible. The sort code and account numbers change everytime in the letters too. I googled the number and many reports that it was spam. The live chat advisors also said to ignore them.
However, I now have another letter saying they have got debt agencies involved because I haven't paid up. When I googled it said that even if I am not responsible for any of this, I still cannot ignore the letters. I am panicking so much. Just dont know what to do. I don't want bailiffs at my door.

Well, my suspicions were right. I have been a victim of fraud. Someone tried to take an account out in my name and succeeded.
I spoke to a woman from the social media team today and she immediately saw there was an issue. She said she will keep me updated and stop the letters but she has to go through a few different channels.
Really not happy as I was told over and over that there was no problem. This lady was the only one who saw there was.
Didn't get to look at my credit rating yet as had a raging migraine last night through stress. Luckily she has sent me confirmation that I am a victim of fraud so I have that as back up. Absolutely awful experience.

a woman from the social media team

social media team from where??

Ellie1015 · 25/08/2023 18:21

Where did you get the contact number for social media lady?

I am sure you know this but please do not use any information from the letters to contact anyone.

Annalisatheantelope · 25/08/2023 18:31

It was via twitter. I tweeted three asking for support and she got back to me on the live chat system.

The lady from the social media team is very likely a scammer, too.

NoSquirrels · 25/08/2023 18:32

OP, did you contact the Three social media team? Or did they somehow get in touch with you? How could they see your account details?

MartyMcFlysPurpleUnderwear · 25/08/2023 19:57

OP have you actually checked your credit report? If something has been taken out in your name and built up a debt you will be able to see if on there. Please don’t just take someone from the ‘social media team’ word for it...

MartyMcFlysPurpleUnderwear · 25/08/2023 20:01

I am also confused as to how they have told you previously (on several occasions by the sound of it) that there is nothing else in your name yet now somebody has suddenly managed to find another account in your name...

something not adding up here...

OP doesn't follow any of the advice here.

Then gets in contact with 'the social media team'.

She's a scammer's dream victim.

That's true.
There's more than one thread on this topic, some from weeks ago.

I wonder if the OP has been scammed before. Maybe that’s why she is receiving letters while the other people she is reading about are receiving phone calls instead. She’s probably been flagged up as an easy target.

She 100% is on a sucker's list. She was told last thread to do a credit check. This thread 'she has a headache' and still hasn't done it.

She hasn't emailed 3 (from their website) to get in writing that she owes nothing.

I hope it's a wind-up, only I know people this obtuse in real life.

No aunt Fran, you won't get 40% interest on a £1000, giving you £1400 back the next month.

SpamFrittersYouSay · 25/08/2023 21:40

OP.
Just make an appointment at the Citizen's Advice Bureau.

Take all of your 'evidence' and theories and let them put you at ease.
Job done.

Or read the advice on all the threads you've had on this subject.

Curseofthenation · 25/08/2023 22:09

I'm also wary of this social media support woman. Please don't say she asked for any bank details to confirm your ID?

I really hope this is just OP feeling a bit silly and trying to cover herself with a made up 'I told you so' update.

There are so many things that don't add up. Three have told you the account details are not recognised by them. They will have run your address through the system and seen that there is no other account under your name. It's very miraculous that this Twitter Wonder Woman has swooped in out of nowhere with all the answers.

Do you have any friend or family member to cast your eye over this paperwork OP? Other PPs have of course suggested credit checks and Citizens Advice are also a good shout.

CarPour · 25/08/2023 22:24

What I don't understand is if the account is registered in your name and to your address why would three tell you you had no debt? As far as they were aware that account is you?

Three have also said that their letters would have a mobile number. The account number changes.

Plus checking threes twitter they don't DM you. They ask you to DM them

I'm not buying this. OP is a scammers dream

Annalisatheantelope · 24/08/2023 22:31

I just don't see why I am also getting debt recovery letters. Surely a scammer couldn't do that.....

Anyone with a printer and a basic grasp of word processing can make a letter. I could make one right now.

They're fake from criminals trying to get money from you. Just throw them in the bin.

Soapyspuds · 26/08/2023 12:28

Not sure how this will have been genuine

Anybody could have seen your tweet and dropped you a PM pretenting to help. And I cannot imagine Three providing specific answers about your account on their public page.

Can you screenprint the conversations you had so we can check it out? Obviously block out any personal details.

You really need to be getting somebody you trust to look into this for you. I agree with others here that you are probably being targeted.

Soapyspuds · 26/08/2023 12:29

Block out your twitter username too if you are going to post the image

gogomoto · 26/08/2023 12:31

Check your credit score with the main agencies (most have free trials) just in case of a fraud

Bluey124 · 26/08/2023 13:12

Three can help with account related queries OFF Twitter. They can send you a direct link to their live chat. They shouldn't be

  1. Asking you questions about your account on Twitter
  2. Asking for any bank details such as your pin.

DH had a query about overpayment and went through this method and it was sorted . You see the same customer advisor names coming up all tweeting from the same account which is three support.
