To be panicking?

Keep receiving letters from three telling me I owe them money for a missed payment. I only use PAYG so this is not possible. The sort code and account numbers change everytime in the letters too. I googled the number and many reports that it was spam. The live chat advisors also said to ignore them.
However, I now have another letter saying they have got debt agencies involved because I haven't paid up. When I googled it said that even if I am not responsible for any of this, I still cannot ignore the letters. I am panicking so much. Just dont know what to do. I don't want bailiffs at my door.

Which debt collectors have they said its with? Can you google them to see if legit then ring them directly to discuss it

SiblingFights · 24/08/2023 19:59

I had similar.

I had a mobile data thingy on PAYG.

I cancelled it with them and cancelled my direct debit.

9 months later I got contact from a debt recovery agency saying I owed money. I disputed it and they referred me back to 3.

3 had not cancelled my PAYG and we got into a big fight with me saying
"PAYG is PAYG and if I cancel it then I don't have to pay"
and them saying
"but you didn't cancel it so we continued the service"

Anyway after a lot of arguing they cancelled it and wiped the debt and I didn't hear anything more from the debt people.

Anyway I would just be careful in case someone else has taken out a mobile phone in your name that you don't know about.

Annalisatheantelope · 24/08/2023 20:02

It was just a debt recovery letter, no name.
I've never taken out contracts so doesn't apply to me. I just feel so worried.

OP, say what you’re worried about did actually happen and a bailiff turned up at your door - what do you think would happen then?

Annalisatheantelope · 24/08/2023 20:06

That I would have to pay the debt.

OP posts:
TheShellBeach · 24/08/2023 20:07

If you know it's a scam and Three have confirmed that you owe nothing, why are you getting so anxious?

PonyPatter44 · 24/08/2023 20:14

No, if the bailiffs turned up at the door, you would not have to pay the debt because you don't have a debt. You are being scammed, by scammers, not by Three. Do you understand that the letters and the debt collection notice are being generated by criminals, trying to scare you into giving them money?

Rather than ringing Three, perhaps you could email Customer Support, and ask them to confirm that you are not in debt with them. Then you have something in writing.

No bailiffs will turn up. Scammers just want money, they don't want your telly or the kids' xbox.

LylaLee · 24/08/2023 20:56

Never open the door to bailiffs.

You call the company and make a payment plan if it's a real debt. You call the police if it is fake.

Do not open the door and let them in.

stayclosetoyourself · 24/08/2023 21:00

Can you call customer service at three instead of live chat?
What did the letter say?

Annalisatheantelope · 24/08/2023 21:02

Customer support won't do it, not helpful at all. I feel stuck knowing I will continue to get these letters as they are coming monthly. It's turning me into a nervous wreck.

Have you posted about this before? If not, I'm sure I've read a post from someone else in a very similar situation recently, so might be worth having a search for the thread to see what the upshot was

LylaLee · 24/08/2023 21:21

Annalisatheantelope · 24/08/2023 21:02

Customer support won't do it, not helpful at all. I feel stuck knowing I will continue to get these letters as they are coming monthly. It's turning me into a nervous wreck.

So you send an email to customer support.

"Please can you confirm there is nothing outstanding on my account mobile number xyz and that there are no other accounts under my name."

When they reply, that's your answer in writing.

You've been put on a scammers list. Likely because you've responded to something in a gullible way.

The letters they send you have a return address? Make a photocopy of the letter they sent you. Say that "this is a scam and I have notified the police." You will be off the list.

Nothing to become a wreck about.

LylaLee · 24/08/2023 21:22

And I mean you email the official 3 customer service.

itsmylife7 · 24/08/2023 21:26

Has the debt letter got your actual name on the letter ?

what's the name and address of the debt agency ?

What do you mean by 'no name'?

Annalisatheantelope · 24/08/2023 21:27

I mean it was just a standard debt recovery letter

Annalisatheantelope · 24/08/2023 21:29

The guy on the live chat said there were no bills outstanding or debts but these letters look too official. I have no idea what's going on

So was 'Lisa Jane Smith, 52 High Street' on the letter?

Or it just said 'You have a debt!'

no company name do you mean? or it didn't have your name on it?

Any chance you can post the letter (obviously cover up any information relating to you)

LylaLee · 24/08/2023 21:32

>these letters look too official

Do you know that anyone with a printer can produce a letter. I can do one now from British gas or whatever. You just scan in a real letter, then change whatever details you want on your computer.

gamerchick · 24/08/2023 21:33

Have you actually checked your credit score OP?

Annalisatheantelope · 24/08/2023 21:41

I haven't as yet but will.
They have my name and address but not my phone number. Guy on live chat said my number would always be included if genuine.
First letter thanked me for opening an account.
Second said I had skipped a payment and owed £230 with a debt recovery letter.
Third said I now owed over a grand and came with a debt recovery letter and a closing of the account.

OP posts:
Ellie1015 · 24/08/2023 21:46

This letter is not real.

  1. you do not have any credit with 3.
  2. 3 have confirmed no fraudulent account has been opened in your name.
  3. 3 have confirmed a genuine letter would have incleded phone number.

I can see you are panicking, my advice is to try and calm yourself down.

The scam is to trick you into paying the debt or even some of it. The scammers will not come to your door as that is far too risky for getting caught and they want cash not items from your home.

Curseofthenation · 24/08/2023 21:47

OP has posted about this before, some time last month...

It's a scam OP. No one is coming to collect any debt. They are trying to get you to pay the fake 'outstanding' amount. You need to listen to Three when they tell you that there is no debt owed by you to them. They can't make the letters stop as they are from a scammer.
