Car insurance… AIBU

Aibu to ring our current provider and ask if they can do cheaper than what they say the renewal will be online?

They are asking for £20 more a month. Excess is huge (300 voluntary, 300 compulsory). New price is £140 a month for myself and DH

Next cheapest policy we can find would be £155 a month, with a £300 compulsory excess and 0 voluntary but would need a black box.

Can’t see the wood for the trees and sick of costs climbing! It should be cheaper this year, as we are up an age bracket

Sorry to drip feed it’s a multi car policy, been driving 4 and 2 years.

If you don't ask you don't get! Good luck

CatsOnTheChair · 23/08/2023 12:42

If noone else is getting close to matching it, I think you don't stand much chance. But if you don't ask, you don't get!

I am 🫣 at the cost tho.

ShirleyPhallus · 23/08/2023 12:44

Why wouldn’t you call to see if they could do cheaper? Why would anyone think you’re unreasonable to do so?

everyone should call and see if they can get their insurance cheaper! Of course!

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 23/08/2023 12:44

Car insurance is rocketing for everyone at the moment. How old are you both? £140 seems very expensive.

Frabbits · 23/08/2023 12:45

Worth a try, but if you can't find an alternative quote with equivalent cover then you probably won't get far. Insurance has got more expensive just like everything else.

Polis · 23/08/2023 12:48

How many cars does it cover?

ruby1234 · 23/08/2023 12:48

We had a multi car policy with Aviva. This year the renewal was up by £400 for 2 cars.
I used a comparison website and looked for 2 separate policies - saved well over £600 on the Aviva quote. I used AA and Churchill.
I think the multi policies are not as good as they used to be!

£20 more is roughly a 17% rise. Well below the average increase for this year, if reports are to be believed.

Wow! Maybe we should count ourselves lucky then

Every year I get a renewal price.

I then look on money supermarket and see the same company would be much cheaper if I was a NEW customer.

I phone and complain and I get the lower price.

It's ridiculous.

lavagal · 23/08/2023 14:56

Insurance was about 30% more expensive for me this year with an extra year ni claims! Prices have sky rocketed

thecatsthecats · 23/08/2023 15:09

If you're looking at the prices monthly, is there any way you can beg, steal or borrow the amount for annual? Even if you have to pay it off on a credit card over 2-3 months, that might save the amount you're looking for with cheaper interest than the extra for paying monthly.

And set up savings to pay it in one go next year if you can!

Spottypineapple · 23/08/2023 16:41

Yes absolutely call and challenge.

My auto renewal was a whopping 70% this year!!!

I searched around on comparison sites to see what I could get then rang my current provider. Managed to get the increase down to 30% which is still mad but couldn't get cheaper online and wasn't going to roll over and take a 70% increase.
They are absolute pisstakers

Cosyblankets · 23/08/2023 16:47

Is a multi car definitely the cheapest way to go?
What are you driving?
My 7 year old focus costs me less than 300 a year. I do have full no claims though. I don't have a huge excess either i think it's 100
Try the companies that aren't on comparison like Hastings and direct line

User15387500 · 23/08/2023 16:53

I do each year with my house insurance and the insurance company takes some off so no harm in trying. I do keep reading that car insurance has gone up lots recently so it may not make any difference anyway. My renewal went up about £10 in May on £200 year car insurance with Aviva, which I thought was ok so renewed
