To think my son should not be asked to write F*ing poetry in year 1 for homework

I feel its too soon. My son cannot spell and I would prefer it if he was given spellings for home work.

Frankly I think he should concentrate on basic literacy skills and hand writing.

Year 1 - Presentation

Blue emphasised text signifies end-of-year (EOY) objectives within Mathematics and Early Learning Goals (ELG) within Foundation Stage. In Years 1 to 6, Literacy does not have end-of-year (EOY) objectives.

Write most letters, correctly formed and orientated, using a comfortable and efficient pencil grip
Write with spaces between words accurately
Use the space bar and keyboard to type their name and simple texts

Year 1 Objectives (by the end of the year)
from the Nat Lit Strategy

Kindersurpise · 29/02/2008 22:28

Sorry, that was not aimed at the schools or the teachers. I have no experience of UK schools. Just it seems like a difficult balance to get right going by the amount of threads on here about spelling.

I am having a tactless night tonight.

Must not drink wine while MNing
Must not drink wine while MNing
Must not drink wine while MNing
Must not drink wine while MNing
Must not drink wine while MNing

See, even gave myself detention.

a. Ban homework altogether, purlease
b. Differentiate the homework to make it achievable
c. Tell the teacher is any homework is taking longer than 20 mins or is particularly difficult so s/he knows for nect time

beeper · 29/02/2008 22:29

and thats barely*

muppetgirl · 29/02/2008 22:29

That is what your ds is expected to do by the end of year 1.

pointydog · 29/02/2008 22:30

I have heard about One Time when son was not rewarded.

a. Has it happened more often?
b. Has the teacher been told about disappointment?

Year 1 - Sentence structure and punctuation

Blue emphasised text signifies end-of-year (EOY) objectives within Mathematics and Early Learning Goals (ELG) within Foundation Stage. In Years 1 to 6, Literacy does not have end-of-year (EOY) objectives.

Compose and write simple sentences independently to communicate meaning
Use capital letters and full stops when punctuating simple sentences

this is what he is expected to be able to write

stuffitllama · 29/02/2008 22:31

and how does indepently writing a poem contribute to that muppet girl?

stuffitllama · 29/02/2008 22:31

ooh so cross can't spell
independently

MadamePlatypus · 29/02/2008 22:32

How can a child tackle poetry at their own level if they can't write words?

How is not doing the homework, or suggesting that the homework be typed by the parent helping Reallytired's DS to become a confident writer? Will the teacher honestly think "Oh I understand exactly where Reallytired is coming from", or it the homework is not done, would it just be an uncompleted project and a gap in her records. How is any of this helping Reallytired's son's self esteem. What is Reallytired supposed to say? "Yes, DS, the homework set for the class is a little too hard for you, its for the other children".

You don't have to write poetry to appreciate it, but you can sure be put off it by being introduced to it in an inappropriate way.

2shoes · 29/02/2008 22:33

realytired yanbu
i remeber so well the nightmare that was home work in primary.
ds was shit at writing. it didn't matter what i did it was a struggle.
i did find one cheat that helped(prepares to be hung) i wrote it out in pencil. he went over in pen then i rubbed the pencil out.

muppetgirl · 29/02/2008 22:33

Compose and write simple sentences independently to communicate meaning
Use capital letters and full stops when punctuating simple sentences

Surely that is what he should be able to do

Write most letters, correctly formed and orientated, using a comfortable and efficient pencil grip
Write with spaces between words accurately

..and this is how it should look.

stuffitllama · 29/02/2008 22:33

pointydog would you like to see homework banned is that a serious post (interested)

stuffitllama · 29/02/2008 22:34

muppetgirl why are you talking about this
what has this got to do with anything

i mean you're frightfully good at copying and pasting but

why?

MadamePlatypus · 29/02/2008 22:35

muppetgirl, are you writing a poem?

pointydog · 29/02/2008 22:35

It ois helping his Rhyme, not his writing.

I have said this before. The objective might be to help his recognition and ability to use rhyme - you do not have to write it all down to be able to do that.

Instead of talking to a bunch of twats like us on mn, tired should talk to the teacher. We cannot really help. All we can do is coo - or not - sympathy.

pointydog · 29/02/2008 22:36

Yes I would like to see homework banned. A big Yes.

muppetgirl · 29/02/2008 22:36

Personally I would.

I didn't like the time it took to plan 3 differentiated tasks, the politics that went along with homework and the fact I had to mark the bl**dy stuff.

Introduce it in the junior school and not before I say. Let the children enjoy learning and most of all learning how to learn.

muppetgirl · 29/02/2008 22:38

That was the objectives from the National Literacy Strategy that tell you what the children have to be able to do by the end of year 1 in terms of writing ability. (is there an echo in here?)

And 'frightfully' is fab poetical language btw

stuffitllama · 29/02/2008 22:41

The teacher can't really help. The teacher is operating under the National Curriculum and like muppetgirl will possibly attempt to find safety in jargon in response. She can't change the homework requirements. If she can, she won't do it for one child. Reallytired can vent here all she likes.

Whatever writing poetry does, it should be done in class.

stuffitllama · 29/02/2008 22:43

oh muppetgirl I had a grin from you and x-posted with a snidey comment

i do feel rotten

stuffitllama · 29/02/2008 22:44

Anyway I still disagree, apart from the fact that homework should be halted at least until Year 5.

muppetgirl · 29/02/2008 22:44

Sorry if you misunderstood my intentions I was using the Strategy to tell others as to what a year 1 is expected, by the government, to be able to do by the end of the year.

Not jargon really, just objectives. They are very clear and (or so I thought) easy to understand.

Teachers aren't allowed to teach what they fancy and are bound by a huge and vast curriculum.

muppetgirl · 29/02/2008 22:45

I am a nice person really

pointydog · 29/02/2008 22:45

What a defeatist attitude. I certainly wouldn;t instill that in a child.
