Nitty gritty comb used

Something brown near red arrow? Is this a hatched headlouse?

I found 22 on my two year old once. They were hatching in front of my eyes as I combed them out. Man, the things I’ve seen.

Are you following the guidelines on the NHS website? I find I need to recomb more frequently to get rind if the little buggers. But it doe work eventually. The thing in the photo looks like a bit for general child grot, not nit related.
Right, off to give my head good scratch.

Hair straighteners don't get to the roots so are not effective. I put hedrin in a spray bottle and did the hair in sections. I wiped the nitty gritty on kitchen roll in between each comb to see what was coming off. Behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.

SherryPalmer · 23/08/2023 07:07

Try Hedrin Once or the NitWits linked above. Both are dimethicone oil and they work by suffocating the live lice and softening the eggs of the non-hatched ones so they don’t survive either. I think it’s too easy to miss lice/eggs when combing alone. It’s certainly impossible to do effectively on your own head.

OP wash all the bed sheets/pillows etc. Everyone in the house needs the nit solution. Then buy a cheap bottle of conditioner and nitty gritty everyone with the conditioner every other day for the next 2 weeks. That will break the laying cycle of any left from the nit treatment.

Laurama91 · 23/08/2023 07:14

My grandma used to put tea tree oil in our shampoo and conditioner. I dont know if its an old wives tale though

fufulina · 23/08/2023 07:20

We did a nitty gritty comb with conditioner every Sunday throughout primary school until the pandemic. Since Covid, no nits.

And now no primary schoolers. Boom.

But honestly - I don’t know how you get rid because all it takes is one parent in the class in denial that their kid ever has nits (🙄) and you will not get rid.

I used to look at the hair at nape of neck and around ears (near scalp) and cut the individual hairs with eggs on before they hatched. Used nail scissors. You need a patient child though.

My mum just used a shot of vinegar in the final jug of water for ever shampoo,no showers in those days😁
