Nitty gritty comb used

Something brown near red arrow? Is this a hatched headlouse?

Cider vinegar is your friend here

HeyJudeNanananana · 22/08/2023 22:34

Sending thoughts and prayers

I remember once it taking WEEKS to get rid of nits in our house. The smell of teal tree still gives me PTSD.

The conditioner, comb and patience are the best things to get rid of them

I used to comb through with conditioner, repeat every day/other day until no eggs/nits/ lice on comb.
Do again after 10 days (same as above) then once every month. Do everyone in the family.
No need to change pillows or worry about the sofa.
Tie hair back at school. Tea tree shampoo or vosene seems to keep it down too.

Agree regards plaits EVERY DAY

TSJ19 · 22/08/2023 22:41

I feel for you we had them really bad last summer. What worked for us was lots of combing with the nitty gritty comb and I used NitWits which got rid of them straight away.

OLDERME · 22/08/2023 22:46

My Mum always gave our hair a final rinse with vinegar. loosens the cement that sticks the nits onto the scalp. Glasgow in the 50's.😆

I think this is the best idea

Once you think you're clear.

Just do a regular check every 2-4 weeks using conditioner.

I found the nit comb you get with the nit shampoos - think lyclear or hedrin really good for the frequent checks not as traumatic as the nitty gritty.

Its really easy to just comb through once a day with that. I think regular combing also affects the lice and maybe damages their legs or something.

23Elfie · 22/08/2023 21:38

Looks like it could be an actual nit rather than an egg.
Have you used any lotion to kill them off?
Just brushing alone would take forever to get them all - you can get all different lotions at the chemist - some only need to be on for 5-10 mins too

I thought the nit was the egg? The nit is the egg of the louse.

Sometimeswinning · 22/08/2023 22:58

I gave up and got the straightners on all our hair! Burnt the little shits as fed up of nothing doing the job. It worked!

Have mostly been getting eggs, so it is a continual cycle

If you are only finding eggs then they are probably old and the treatment has worked.
When you have an active infestation then you find dozens of lice. And if your eyesight is good enough they will be obvious.
If the lice are very tiny then they are just hatched from ages laid up to 2 weeks ago

The treatment only kills the eggs not remove them. If the eggs are 2cm from the scalp that may be 2 months old

ReliantRobyn · 22/08/2023 23:01

You are riddled !

GnomeDePlume · 22/08/2023 23:02

We used cheap tea tree conditioner. Comb through with increasingly fine combs finishing with a nit comb. Treat if anything found.

On the plus side DC had beautifully soft hair!

Jellybean23 · 22/08/2023 21:52

They should never have done away with the nit nurse who regularly inspected children's heads in schools.

Nitty Nora the Bug Explorer! - what we called our nit nurse back in the 70s. 😁

LakeFlyPie · 22/08/2023 23:19

You really don't need chemicals. Just conditioner, the Nitty Gritty comb and the correct combing schedule (see the wet combing section for which days to comb). Good luck!

ichundich · 22/08/2023 23:21

We tried combing without much success. Hedrin killed them all.

TiaraBoo · 22/08/2023 23:21

If we had the dreaded letter from school, I used to use a nitty gritty comb every morning and evening with conditioner and if I found anything I’d start all over again until the kids heads were clear.
I also bought an electronic nit comb from boots which would zap them.

I had a full cupboard of nit equipment and treatments, then kids got a bit older and no more nits!

Holidaystress11 · 22/08/2023 23:29

Hedrin left in overnight. They will suffocate and literally fall off onto the pillow. Wash out..wash all bedding. Repeat In 7 days fir any hatched eggs. Should be golden!

Holidaystress11 · 22/08/2023 23:30

This one. Will save hours of combing

Thank you for all the feedback, much appreciated

  1. Re vinegar - how do i apply it. Just pour over hair and let it run off or do i need to leave it on eg wear swomxap to keep it on
  1. Re someone said I'm riddled - do you mean you see something else on the photo?

That, exactly.

Heddon hadn't been invented when my kids were nitty though.

Oh, and no, I don't think that's a louse. It's too round, there are no legs, and it's the wrong colour, if your camera is accurate.

And yes, no faffing with sheets, pillowcases and soft furnishings. Just a nit comb, loads of conditioner on wet hair, and kept tied back at school.

Dinnerlady12 · 22/08/2023 23:37

Me and my children had them last month! Tried Lyclear and Hedrin with no success then read on here about the nitty gritty comb instead of the plastic ones. So ordered one along with this and they have been gone since I only done one treatment.

I suspect that poster was being sarcastic. There's nothing in the comb. If your kids were riddled with lice, one comb through with conditioner would have several big lice wiggling around on it.

You may be over reacting a tad.

golddustwomen · 22/08/2023 23:47

I agree with Hedrin, and hair straighteners! Horrible little bastards.

AdoraBell · 22/08/2023 23:48

I used vinegar and olive oil to clear lice when DDs were at school. We were in Latin America were most people can’t afford the shampoo for lice, so they use the old methods.

The vinegar dissolves the glue keeping the eggs onto the hair and the oil kills the lice.

Mix the two, cheapest olive oil, or coconut oil, cheap vinegar. Tip head back and use a towel on forehead and slather the mixed oil and vinegar onto the hair. Cover with a towel and leave for 30 mins then comb through.

Repeat every 7 days until totally clear.

Be careful not to let the vinegar to tun into eyes.

I will never forget being in the queue at the sorting office with ds & saw one marching across his blonde hair. Still makes me itch thinking about it.
