Advice for all of you with bifold doors that fully open up the back of your house. Everything you do and say can be heard by your neighbours.
Currently having to shut all my windows while child screams and throws a tantrum. Before that it was dad on the phone speaking about hedging on the LME, not forgetting mum earlier shouting at the kids.

Windows do pretty much the same thing. What's your point?

SM4713 · 22/08/2023 15:17

It depends how close the houses are and what orientation the other houses window are etc.

Just start bashing out some music in the garden - they'll soon get fed up and put the banshee back in the house.
Our neighbours also have these doors, and it's amazing how much sound they let out when fully open!

Compare the square footage of the opening of a window vs a set of bi-folds, and you'll see why it's not 'pretty much' the same at all - they're vastly different!

Are you making the noise or your neighbours?

ManateeFair · 22/08/2023 15:34

You know you'd be able to hear them if they were in the garden too, don't you? Why is getting some fresh air through a bifold door unacceptable while getting some fresh air in the garden is presumably OK?

Because you wouldn’t expect a phone call taking place in the garden, even the most stupid would know it would be overheard, whereas if you are in your house you assume it won’t be, windows open or not

you also hope someone would take their screaming child indoors rather than leave it in the garden for the same reason.

personally i would go into the garden and have a load discussion about ‘do you think we should tell Bob we can hear all his private conversations now they have the bifold open’ and see what happens

then again I have been known to shout out the window ‘stop screaming’ at some child up the road, whose parent was obviously in the garden with them and ignoring them. They stopped though. Sometimes it’s just the complete lack of awareness of the irritant to neighbours

I hear my neighbour’s conversations through the windows when they are open I don’t think this is a bifold door issue.

You obviously don't understand the physics of opening up the entire back of a property.

Mmmm might be the way forward!
