Everything is because I’m fat.

I went to the doctors today, I keep feeling really faint and going dizzy. My doctor suggested it is because of being overweight (she had taken my weight and height while there). This has really upset me because I don’t believe this is the cause, I’m 5 foot 1 and weigh 10 stone (fluctuate to slightly under sometimes but this is what the scale showed today). I genuinely think it’s my build and can’t be helped, I’m a 30HH bra and naturally have a big bum, when I was 14 I was 7 and a half stone and still had a massive bum while the rest of me was bones.

I cannot lose weight, I ran a marathon 2 weeks ago, I weight train twice a week, I run 3 times a week and I walk the dog for 1-2hours a day, longer on weekends. I have reasonable meals and no snacks, I had 2 slices of toast for breakfast with a small amount of butter, some frittata for lunch with a couple of cherry tomatoes and a 320calorie ready meal for my tea. I’ve had 3 glasses of sugar free squash and will have another before bed.

I asked the doctor for help with weight loss if she thought this was the cause but she suggested smaller meals and increasing activity levels. I don’t know what to do.

I feel like complaining to the surgery because I’m no closer to knowing why I always feel so lightheaded and I’ve been made to feel really self conscious with no real support. Am I being sensitive or is this reasonable?

If you're doing alot of physical activity it could be that you are low on magnesium as this gets sweated out and nowadays foods are quite low in it as soil tends to be depleted. Well worth taking some supplements and see how you go. I am a huge believer in vitamin D, B and magnesium, especially as you approach menopause (not sure if this is the case for you.)

Hi haven’t read all posts but I had this dizziness and the doctor got me to wear a blood pressure monitor for 48 hours. I was fine a lot of the day but then suddenly it dropped - I know hard to believe but down to 70s/40s. I was on blood pressure tablets due to heart scarring from covid (long separate story) and the dose was too high.
The drops correlated perfectly to the terrible dizziness, and walking around made it better.
I would ask for the monitor?

Isolated17 · 23/08/2023 09:33

From the food diary and exercise you described, you're in a severe calorie deficit. I felt exactly the same on that.

I also developed temporary heart problems that went away once I started to eat more and exercise less.

geekone · 21/08/2023 19:07

OP as a runner I would also like to say you’re not eating enough but also look at this article and get back to dr I know someone who nearly died due to this. https://marathonhandbook.com/runners-anemia/#:~:text=Essentially%2C%20every%20time%20your%20feet,of%20becoming%20an%20anemic%20runner.

Yes this. I’m a runner and had very similar symptoms. I started taking spa tone liquid iron about 2 months ago and within a few weeks it disappeared. It was especially bad during my period which makes sense.

Btw I also have a similar BMI. It’s not your weight and there’s no evidence that a slightly overweight BMI affects health, or certainly not that significantly. Quite a few studies actually suggest 26 - 27 has good health outcomes for women of reproductive age …

ittakes2 · 23/08/2023 11:02

Op I would be concerned if you recently started the pill it’s related to this - read your packet for symptoms / concerns

I called today and said to the practice manager I wasn’t happy and didn’t feel listened to. I had a telephone appointment with a different doctor and have to go for a blood test first thing tomorrow.

Well done you… good you are getting it investigated. Sure someone will have a word in his ear.

Yoghurtpotsatdawn · 23/08/2023 11:38

So glad you’re going back to the GP. If you are overweight it’s only very slightly and not enough to be causing so many symptoms. I hope you get some answers soon. Good luck

TheRobotsAreComing · 23/08/2023 12:18

Maybe request a thyroid blood panel? Hypothyroidism (Hashimotos) or hyper thyroidism have a mad list of symptoms.

Checking in on hormone balance is always a good shout. All the best with your next attempt with the GP. :)

KatGirl007 · 23/08/2023 13:41

Make sure you are taking vitamins/minerals and electrolyte drops in your water with all the running.

Jack80 · 23/08/2023 18:31

I would ask for a blood test, I’m 42, I and 5 ft 5 and I weight 10 stone or just under sometimes, I don’t exercise as much as you. I walk the dog for 30 mins a day and sometimes do ring fit. My daughter was dizzy at times it sounds to me you could be anemic. xx

Peony654 · 23/08/2023 18:40

Have you tried cutting out ultra processed food? If that’s a typical day, there’s next to no fruit and veg in your diet.

midlifecrash · 23/08/2023 19:09

and a quick Google confirms that there is a QOF for Weight Management for 23/24. All GPS have had to sign up and are expected to have “conversations with patients” about weight loss- it’s part of their contract this year. It’s supposed to help tackle obesity but I’ve only read the first page on this thread and it’s clearly being carried out in a blanket approach way without taking the patient’s individual circumstances into account and without much clue about what could be done to support if there was a problem….

How bloody silly

Livingonthedarkside · 23/08/2023 19:35

These are all symptoms of POTS, but to get that diagnosis is difficult but getting a wider spectrum diagnosis of this is a lot easier. I struggled for 3 years with the NHS (please I’m not digging them out) but where it was not black and white I was slipping through the crack. I have since gone private and got what I needed, (2 week heart monitor, tilt test, exercise stress test) and all resolved with a little medication, and now the symptoms you have and a few more have gone.

please go back for a second opinion and keep pushing for answers until you feel satisfied.

Blueink · 29/08/2023 03:23

OP how are u doing? What did your tests find?

Fbshe · 29/08/2023 10:03

The tests didn’t find anything, the other doctor booked for me to go in and has said I need to up my calories. He measured my waist and hips and said that based on that I’m at optimum weight so not to worry about my bmi, he also went through everything I’ve eaten and said it’s not enough for what I do. He has said to give it a couple of weeks with higher calories and I’m booked in to see him again to see if there’s an improvement.

RedPony1 · 29/08/2023 10:35

I'm same height and when i was 10st i was a size 8 - that's not fat!

gamerchick · 29/08/2023 10:38

Can't say I'm shocked at that OP. Give it a blast.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2023 13:16

So glad you got a second opinion, that sounds much more sensible though obviously you'd probably have liked some more concrete answers.
Make sure you always ask for that GP not the other when you make appointments in future!

Yoghurtpotsatdawn · 29/08/2023 15:28

Im glad you’ve seen another GP op. I hope the extra calories makes you feel lots better. They sound far more sensible than the first one your saw.

lljkk · 29/08/2023 19:24

So what are your measurements? Skip the norks, just tell us waist at smallest & hips at largest.

Blueink · 29/08/2023 20:18

Great everything was ok and you just need to eat a bit more!

Fbshe · 29/08/2023 20:23

I’ve had a curry for my tea with every carb going to get me started. I didn’t take notice of the measurements and I’ve only got a metal tape measure that doesn’t bend around me very well so can’t find out at the moment sorry.

OP posts:
Needspace2023 · 29/08/2023 20:35

Have protein with your meals if possible. Ime we start to become resistant to metabolising carbs well with age. I know you're in your early 30s but I think it starts around now andnonoybgeys worse. Forget counting calories too as long as you're not overdoing it, you need enough calories to sustain you and your active lifestyle.
