I went to the doctors today, I keep feeling really faint and going dizzy. My doctor suggested it is because of being overweight (she had taken my weight and height while there). This has really upset me because I don’t believe this is the cause, I’m 5 foot 1 and weigh 10 stone (fluctuate to slightly under sometimes but this is what the scale showed today). I genuinely think it’s my build and can’t be helped, I’m a 30HH bra and naturally have a big bum, when I was 14 I was 7 and a half stone and still had a massive bum while the rest of me was bones.

I cannot lose weight, I ran a marathon 2 weeks ago, I weight train twice a week, I run 3 times a week and I walk the dog for 1-2hours a day, longer on weekends. I have reasonable meals and no snacks, I had 2 slices of toast for breakfast with a small amount of butter, some frittata for lunch with a couple of cherry tomatoes and a 320calorie ready meal for my tea. I’ve had 3 glasses of sugar free squash and will have another before bed.

I asked the doctor for help with weight loss if she thought this was the cause but she suggested smaller meals and increasing activity levels. I don’t know what to do.

I feel like complaining to the surgery because I’m no closer to knowing why I always feel so lightheaded and I’ve been made to feel really self conscious with no real support. Am I being sensitive or is this reasonable?

How old are you OP?

I felt exactly how you described when I was 44 and it turned out to be peri menopause.

Woofappreciationday · 21/08/2023 17:06

God im 23 stone and even i dont accept that bullshit from doctors. Weight is a contributing factor in a diagnosis but not a diagnosis.

Id insist on a second opinion.

Gnomegnomegnome · 21/08/2023 17:08

Your diet is awful and would be the first thing to try and fix.
If you are training a lot you need to fuel your body more. It can’t run on some toast, a frittata and a ready meal.

Insommmmnia · 21/08/2023 17:09

I got told being overweight was the reason I had a trapped nerve in my shoulder

Not, you know, the scar tissue that I have from an accident as a child which causes a trapped nerve every once in a while even when I am skinny

HB1974 · 21/08/2023 17:14

Saying it's to do with weight is just an easy way for the GP to be able to tick a box that you have been seen and dealt with.

It's fucking annoying, simplistic and often wrong.

And it stops people, including me, from seeing their GP. I just know it will be a complete waste of time.

agent765 · 21/08/2023 17:16

Get another GP.

If they're that lazy on diagnosing something that may not be serious and easily sorted, they could cost you your life.

Once you get a proper diagnosis, then you complain.

I was palmed off for decades. It was my weight then depression. Turned out to be a progressive neurological disease that was diagnosed initially in my late teens!

Oh, then there were the countless times I was told it was side effects of the drugs they'd put me on so I stopped taking them.

Symptoms still there, cue telling off for stopping taking them but nothing done to help the symptoms I've been suffering because it's all down to my bloody hormones now!!!

FofB · 21/08/2023 17:16

Ask for a blood test- I feel that way when my iron levels or B12 are low.

FeedMeSantiago · 21/08/2023 17:27

I have a POTs like illness, have been under the autonomic unit a few times. How old are you OP? Mine was worse when I was in my teens and 20s.

Are you hyper mobile at all?

I would seek a second opinion, proper bloods and ask for an autonomic referral. I was dismissed for years despite full on faints as a child and young adult until my Rheumatologist referred me to the autonomic unit in my mid 20s.

Dopaminefuelled · 21/08/2023 17:40

Have you looked into POTs at all?

OnlyFannys · 21/08/2023 17:48

If you are doing all that exercise your muscle mass might be tipping your weight into the overweight category, what clothes size do you wear? Not that it's massively relevant because a few lbs overweight is absolutely not going to be the cause of every bloody health issue 🙄 I think a second opinion if you are able to is a good idea and really push for blood work to be done. My anemia and vit D deficiency was causing me to become very faint including when I was driving so I had to stop until I was better.

nightingaleflossy · 21/08/2023 17:50

Mum198000 · 21/08/2023 16:22

are you dizzy on standing up? Look up POTS if you are.

would agree with looking into POTS. often diagnosed late and mid diagnosed. more common in women

Magicoven · 21/08/2023 17:53

Judging by your meals you need to be eating more calories for your activity level! I'd make an appointment with a different doctor (if they push back on this go via the practice manager). Also worth keeping note of exactly when you feel faint so they can see any patterns.

Merryoldgoat · 21/08/2023 17:55

@Fbshe

I had similar issues a while back (but I AM very fat) and it was a significant vitamin D deficiency.

I actually take multivitamins, a b-complex, and 4000iu of vitamin D a day and it makes a significant difference to how I feel.

I’d ask for some blood tests.

ScallyWaggyWoo · 21/08/2023 17:56

are you a muscular build? If so then carry on as you are. If you are a size 12+ and jiggle when you walk, try cutting the upf from your diet and see how you feel. Your food doesn’t sound very healthy tbh, aside from the lunch (assuming you cooked it yourself from scratch and didn’t use seed oils).

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 21/08/2023 17:57

I agree. Blood Tests. Keep asking. Or try to just book one in online.

LindorDoubleChoc · 21/08/2023 17:57

Absolutely terrible treatment from your GP! Ffs. At the very least they should have prescribed a blood test - it's fairly fucking obvious. Dizziness is a common symptom in anaemia.

Please take it further op and do not be fobbed off.

I am one inch taller and at least a stone, if not 1.5 stones heavier. If I had an appointment like that with my GP I would be raging.

LindorDoubleChoc · 21/08/2023 18:00

And you weigh under 10 stone unless you stripped off to butt naked to get weighed!

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/08/2023 18:02

Your diet is not enough for a marathon runner. Also I am not sure how you can be running and weight training that much and not lose weight on that diet.

Mr Monkey is slim and runs four to five times a week and usually runs two to three marathons a year. Yesterday he ate:

Breakfast - A bacon roll, a banana and a cup of tea.

Lunch - A chicken salad sandwich, a slice of carrot cake, an apple.

Pub - two bags of crisps, three pints of beer

Dinner - Greek lamb casserole (lamb, aubergines, courgettes, peppers, tomatoes) with brown rice, a banana, three chocolate digestives, a yoghurt.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2023 16:23

I'm the same height and similar weight - that's nothing like obese. I'm 62 and pretty fit apart from needing thyroxine.

I think you should get a second opinion, what aspect of being a bit overweight was supposed to be causing you to be faint and dizzy?Confused

I am 5'1" and am 8 stone exactly. I am certainly not slim, I have quite a fat tummy which I can't lose.

Whatawaytomakealivin · 21/08/2023 18:03

Did she check your ears?

CecilyP · 21/08/2023 18:04

That’s crazy! You are only part the way into the overweight category. If your weight was causing your feeling faint and dizzy, you’d surely have the obese and morbidly obese fainting all over the place.

As it is, you seem to eat very little, so could that be the cause of your feeling faint. I’d also recommend eating more and iron or vitamin tablets. And if your symptoms persist, see another doctor for further tests!

Whatawaytomakealivin · 21/08/2023 18:04

You could be suffering from vertigo. If there's no obvious cause. I am not a doctor though.

Nerdymummy · 21/08/2023 18:06

I had similar issues in the past, it was my blood pressure dropping. I have low normal blood pressure but when I’m standing up a long time I would get dizzy, feel like I was going to be sick and feel very hot. My blood pressure was dropping. For me having more having more potassium helped. Hope you get to bottom of it and definitely complain. Not every issue has to do with weight. I hope you feel better

PhantomUnicorn · 21/08/2023 18:07

you need to complain and get a second opinion.

Isthisit22 · 21/08/2023 18:07

How old are you? I had this recently and I’m really slim. Think it’s linked to peri menopause. I tried to take more vitamins and it did pass
