I went to the doctors today, I keep feeling really faint and going dizzy. My doctor suggested it is because of being overweight (she had taken my weight and height while there). This has really upset me because I don’t believe this is the cause, I’m 5 foot 1 and weigh 10 stone (fluctuate to slightly under sometimes but this is what the scale showed today). I genuinely think it’s my build and can’t be helped, I’m a 30HH bra and naturally have a big bum, when I was 14 I was 7 and a half stone and still had a massive bum while the rest of me was bones.

I cannot lose weight, I ran a marathon 2 weeks ago, I weight train twice a week, I run 3 times a week and I walk the dog for 1-2hours a day, longer on weekends. I have reasonable meals and no snacks, I had 2 slices of toast for breakfast with a small amount of butter, some frittata for lunch with a couple of cherry tomatoes and a 320calorie ready meal for my tea. I’ve had 3 glasses of sugar free squash and will have another before bed.

I asked the doctor for help with weight loss if she thought this was the cause but she suggested smaller meals and increasing activity levels. I don’t know what to do.

I feel like complaining to the surgery because I’m no closer to knowing why I always feel so lightheaded and I’ve been made to feel really self conscious with no real support. Am I being sensitive or is this reasonable?

Another one here whose wondering if its your diet - is that a standard day for you? Just wondering if there's a bit of blood sugar stuff going on, as that doesn't sound like enough calories for your activity levels and i wouldn't have thought toast would set you up for the day really as a runner, plus a ready meal. Is it worth experimenting with porridge or equivalent in the morning, something filling and slow release, then a bit more protein and veg throughout the day?

IMustDoMoreExercise · 21/08/2023 18:02

I am 5'1" and am 8 stone exactly. I am certainly not slim, I have quite a fat tummy which I can't lose.

dont be ridiculous, no adult that is 8 stone can in ANY way be considered 'fat'

i suggest you address your body dysmorphia

Verilyshesaid · 21/08/2023 18:08

I’m no expert but to me it looks like you are not eating enough for that level of activity.

Try and get an appt with a different gp and insist on a blood test op. Or pay for one privately if you can. Hope you feel better soon.

JenWillsiam · 21/08/2023 18:08

You’re not even in the obese category. That’s just overweight. I would want more explanation than that frankly.

Purpleavocado · 21/08/2023 18:09

You don't sound very over weight at all! With that being said, I did find when I started tracking calories on myfitnesspal that I was eating more than I thought. I'm not saying this is what you're doing - it's just worth tracking for a few weeks. I wouldn't use the MFP goal of 1200, I'd set it to 1450 and ignore the MFP exercise calories

JenWillsiam · 21/08/2023 18:09

Over the next 14 days keep a diary. Log all food, all activity. And episodes. So they can see what’s going on. I had similar and they started to take me more seriously.

GardenGladness23 · 21/08/2023 18:12

Honestly they just want to fob you off, I have been so unwell (inc dizziness) to the point where I’m a bit scared, did a few tests all negative, went back and asked about peri menopause and she (it was a female GP) was just vile and patronising towards me, sent me away with a flea in my ear!

Moltenpink · 21/08/2023 18:13

I hope you manage to get a second opinion. Just a thought, but do you start to feel panicky before feeling faint in the supermarket? Panic attacks used to make me feel faint all the time in hot and confined situations. (Obviously a physical cause is more likely but thought I would mention)

BaroldandNedmund · 21/08/2023 18:14

OP you’re only slightly overweight and you weight train so you’re probably not overweight at all. I’m the same height as you and just under nine stones and I’m a size 8-10….plus I have a small frame, so I don’t see how you could be noticeably large.

It does sound as if you’re not eating enough.

GardenGladness23 · 21/08/2023 18:14

Yes I agree with @JenWillsiam might be an idea to weigh yourself at the start of the two weeks and end off also.

FWIW weight training does not agree with me, makes me more hungry and even when I’m trying not to give into that hunger I still put on worthy from the muscle. Maybe try changing the weight training to something more boy worthy based like yoga or Pilates??

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 21/08/2023 18:16

I just put my weight and height in the NHS BMI calculator as a female aged 53, female aged 30, male aged 53 and male aged 30. It said my BMI and ideal weight was exactly the same for all 4 of those scenarios. How can that be correct and, if it is, what's the point of putting you age or sex into the calculation?

HamstersAreMyLife · 21/08/2023 18:17

I've had similar and breathlessness. I do nowhere near your exercise levels as I can't jog but walk briskly for about an hour 4x a week and do a 1 hr fitness class. I weigh 9 stones and am 5ft 1 and was told it was my weight that was an issue. I also can't seem to lose and have put on a stone in a year despite very sensible eating. I suspect peri and thyroid (all women in my family got underactuve thyroid at menopause age) issues and plan on asking for a blood test so it sounds like it might be worth you doing similar.

ChaToilLeam · 21/08/2023 18:19

You’re being utterly fobbed off by a lazy doctor.

NewName122 · 21/08/2023 18:19

My son gets highlighted and he is super skinny. Dr told him it is where he is not eating enough.

How old are you? I’m 5’4 and weigh 10 stone and I wouldn’t consider myself overweight.

I was like you. Was training all the time and couldn’t lose weight. But I’m 44 and in the menopause and I read about dieting for that. Because you hold onto fat way mote

i then noticed I started to lose weight but I had things like lean salmon and salad and salads etc. I literally stopped every single thing with sugar in and had fruit for sugar but even cut that down to twice a werk

its working now but it took me years to work that out

Cerealkillerontheloose · 21/08/2023 18:24

TeapotTitties · 21/08/2023 17:05

How old are you OP?

I felt exactly how you described when I was 44 and it turned out to be peri menopause.

Jinx! I just posted this exact thing! 😂

SmudgeButt · 21/08/2023 18:24

Drs can be absolute arses at times. Mine kept telling me to lose weight no matter what I was seeing him about. Broke my arm. "You should lose weight." I pointed out that I had lost a stone in the previous 12 months. "Oh. Well. Lose some more." No well done or any kind of encouragement.

As for the dizziness....with me it was not drinking enough fluids so I'm trying to up mine to 2 litres a day. If you are really sporty, running, weight training I would think you would need at least that much - I think you said 2 pints instead?

And I agree with others about getting the diet right. Most areas have a diet referral service but ensure that they know you need help of a dietician not a recommendation to Slimming World. My surgery even gave me a photocopied "diet suggestions" sheet which had lovely helpful things like switch from regular fizzy drinks to diet ones!! So no surprise that it was produced by a company that made sweeteners!!!

The other thing you might want to check out with blood tests etc is your insulin levels. It's not just conventionally fat people that develop diabetes. My OH got more and more ill over about 5 years with what turned out to be type 2 diabetes. Easy enough to treat but one thing that still effects him badly is irregular meals which mean his blood sugar dips much too low.

Good luck with it - and I hope you get it all sorted!!!

While I agree BMI is a flawed system, to be fair, I am 5ft6 and my normal healthy size is 10 stone. I am sporty though so I have maintained 8 stone for 20 years where I had also dipped into 6 stone naturally.

Do go back for another opinion as you feel faint and dizzy, however, the most obvious thing to look at is what you are eating, regardless of your size. So move to more fresh, natural food and you should see a difference- most people would.

Good luck.

MariaVT65 · 21/08/2023 18:26

Hi OP :) I’m half an inch shorter than you and I was also 10stone before my current pregnancy (failure to lose previous baby weight). I would definitely not describe myself as overweight, and in fact still fit into some size 8 clothes.

BMI IMO is also bollocks. At our height, we could weigh around 7 stone and still be healthy. People told me I looked ill when I once dropped below 8 stone. I also have big boobs!

Definitely get a second opinion. Maybe get your iron levels checked too.

ittakes2 · 21/08/2023 18:26

I would also google PoTs.

bowlingalleyblues · 21/08/2023 18:27

I had this linked to perimenopause. Going on the pill has stopped it for now. I’d be careful about getting up, manage the symptoms, raise your legs up if you’ve been standing for a while.

Lastchancechica · 21/08/2023 18:27

How utterly shit of the doctor.
You have been fobbed off.
It has nothing at all to do with your weight!
A full set of bloods should have been taken. Thyroid check etc.
Try another GO - unacceptable excuse not to treat.

I am a few pounds over weight and dr compared my weight to my 21 year old self ( I am 51 now and heavily menopausal!) and told me to lose weight. I was there with a lump in my breast, not dietary advice!

Mossstitch · 21/08/2023 18:28

Sounds like low blood pressure, I can feel the same stood still if warm, I find myself moving from foot to foot helps. If I bend down to do something my vision can go grey for a few seconds and a bit dizzy like your going to faint. Have you heard of 'white coat syndrome'.......blood pressure rises as soon as someone tries to take mine and I'm pronounced 'normal'🤣 even on an operating table once I was complimented on being 'one of those lucky people with naturally low blood pressure' ......there is no good treatment for it, a very experienced Dr at the hospital where I work told me the side effects from medication aren't worth it🤷‍♀️

AndyWarholShoes · 21/08/2023 18:30

No advice sorry re the fainting. I am your height and weigh less. But I would love to be as fit as you. Running a marathon blows my mind. How do people do it?? You sound properly fit and strong. You need to be taken seriously by the doctors.

Oblomov23 · 21/08/2023 18:32

I'd ask for a 2nd opinion.
