I’m at the first stage of a job I really want and it’s a video interview where questions pop up and I have to record myself answering.

I feel sick and I just can’t do it. It needs to be submitted today and I just can’t, please help

If you want this job you are just going to have to do this. Put on the big girl pants, positive attitude and at least give it a shot. Got to be in it to win it as they say.

CarriePT · 20/08/2023 15:51

Get a glass of water. When the question pops up take a sip and give yourself ten seconds to think.
You can go this, big girl pants.

Pretend you're speaking to friends, don't be afraid to show emotion , don't be afraid to pause, especially if the questions are completely new to you.
Be honest and be yourself !

yellowsmileyface · 20/08/2023 15:58

You've got to switch your mindset. Telling yourself "I can't do it" is hardly going to get you the job, and will reflect in the answers you give. You've got to be your own cheerleader.

Maybe take a few minutes to meditate before doing the interview, take some deep breaths, and think about the skills and traits you have to bring to the company.

You've got this!

HeatherMoores · 20/08/2023 16:03

Look you need to get angry. Get angry with that voice of fear and say ‘sod you I’m not going to let you ruin this for me’.

Show them what you’re made of.
You can do it. Just do it.

As the late great Susan Jeffers said… Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway.

Conkersinautumn · 20/08/2023 16:10

I did one of these and I really can't do to camera well. (I got the next stage and I'm really akward)
I parked my dh behind my laptop camera and spoke to him.

Go for it!

Waynettaaa · 20/08/2023 16:31

I couldn't cope with that, so no advice, sorry 🫣

BasiliskStare · 20/08/2023 16:44

Yes you can do it.

Just keep breathing and answer the question. ( Mainly keep breathing ) :) Do have a glass of water by you and once you've answered one question - forget it and move on to the next .

So much luck to you.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 20/08/2023 17:13

Do you have a rough idea of what the questions might be? I had an interview recently and felt the same but I'd written down and rehearsed so many answers/scenarios to what I thought might pop up that I managed to use those answers even for questions I wasn't expecting.

Nobody likes interviews do they? But if you really want the job you're going to have to suck it up and do it!

FutureThroughLensOfThePast · 20/08/2023 17:16

Focus on the camera, not the screen. You won't be distracted by your own face and it will appear as eye-contact when replayed.

TheThinkingGoblin · 20/08/2023 17:22

I have seen these video interviews being used more and more in the US & Canada/UK

I don't agree with the trend because its way too impersonal. Its basically just another way to filter potential candidates faster (they will be using AI for this as well)

My advise is to research the video interviews online so you get an understanding of the questions they might ask.

Them game the shit out of the process by practicing canned responses using your laptop camera.

Be presentable and make sure your background environment is clean when you do the interview as well.

towriteyoumustlive · 20/08/2023 17:26

Just read the question out loud then have a conversation with yourself!

Think of it more like a practice interview like you'd do if you had an in person interview. Try and forget it's being recorded.

Perhaps have the camera arranged so you can look out the window whilst answering to help you think.

itgoesroundandround · 20/08/2023 20:15

Well I’ve done it and blown it … you could answer as many times as you liked before submitting and now I think my answers were shit and I missed things out. And everyone else will have taken advantage and gone and research and written down their answers.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 20/08/2023 21:30

You don't know you've blown it. Don't catastrophise.

Well done. You faced the fear. Now it's done and at least you gave it a shot and at most you've got the job.

BasiliskStare · 20/08/2023 22:08

@itgoesroundandround don't worry until you find out . & if it hasn't gone well - experience counts. But you did it. Next time you do one ( if you have to and if you want to ) you may do it differently but don't give up yet. I have my fingers crossed for you
