To think most people don’t have huge ‘pig out’ days once a fortnight?

Deeryme1 · 20/08/2023 14:55

Went for brunch with a friend earlier who, when we came to order, said she was still feeling full and bloated from her ‘pig out’ day yesterday. I asked what that was and she said ‘oh once a fortnight, DH and I have a complete pig out day, it’s great. We start off with bacon sarnies in the morning, followed by a McDonald’s for lunch and then loads of crisps/ chocolate/ sweets etc.

I was like oh right and she said ‘do you not ever have a day sometimes where you just eat anything and everything you want?!’ And I said no, not really. She rolled her eyes and said ‘no wonder you’re so skinny’

The thing is, I eat a bar of chocolate pretty much everyday and if I go out for a meal (once every 2-3 weeks) I’ll always get at least 2 courses, sometimes 3 and I don’t care what I eat on those occasions, so I’m hardly an Angel in terms of food. However, no, I don’t ever really let myself have a day at home where I just eat whatever the hell I want for a whole day. I WOULD put on weight.

She seemed shocked and like I was uptight for not doing so, but I don’t think a regular pig out day like that is the norm for most people, is it? Or am I just really uptight?

OP this is a really contradictory post. You call it something different but both do the same thing.

Ohthatsabitshit · 20/08/2023 14:56

I eat what I like all the time, so I’d find both of you weird.

HarrietJet · 20/08/2023 14:58

You both sound obsessed with food.

thecatsthecats · 20/08/2023 14:59

I think a lot more people put on weight through the "chocolate bar a day" route than the "occasional pig out" route.

ReignOfError · 20/08/2023 14:59

You seem to be comparing apples and apples, and deciding yours is fruit and hers are doughnuts.

Ponoka7 · 20/08/2023 15:01

I do mine monthly. I'm 55 and it's from a health not weight pov. The pound bakery traditional pasties are often on the list. December gets weekly treat days, the pound bakery festive bake features. I'm having so many friends who aren't obese have artery/heart/cancer etc issues, I'm limiting alcohol, bacon and ultra processed food.

continentallentil · 20/08/2023 15:01

I think worrying about what other people eat is odd. Why do you care?

I like that expression. I’m nicking it!

NotTerfNorCis · 20/08/2023 15:02

Sounds like she's careful most of the time and treats herself occasionally?

OP this is a really contradictory post. You call it something different but both do the same thing.

I get you, but to be fair, sometimes I can go a couple of months without going out for a meal, they apparently have it religiously every other Saturday or Sunday.

But yes, it’s not that different, I did say that to her as I was trying to defend myself a bit but she was like ‘nahhh, going for a meal isn’t a proper pig out’

I’m wondering if I need to allow myself to have a day like this at home once a month or something but I think for me it would be a slippery slope as I’d probably want to again the next day etc.

I sometimes buy a family size Victoria sponge and eat the whole thing myself at once. I guess that's a pig out?

But not once a fortnight. I do tend to eat what I want anyway, although I don't eat biscuits, fizzy drinks, sweets etc only as I don't like them . I like cheese, butter carbs, pastries etc.

simbobs · 20/08/2023 15:03

To answer your actual question no, I don't think it normal to eat this way once a fortnight. The items you mention wouldn't be on my wishlist anyway. I do eat what I want but make better choices. I don't eat a chocolate bar a day either.

JudgeAnderson · 20/08/2023 15:04

Not my normal anyway. I'll have treats like going out for coffee and cake, or a pizza for dinner, but not overeat all day.

Mortimermay · 20/08/2023 15:05

I'm a bit concerned that this is bothering you as much as it seems to be - why do you care whether other people are having "pig out" days and what they are eating during those times? The fact that you are referring to yourself as being uptight about this and wondering whether you should "allow" yourself to do this is also a bit of a worry. People have lots of different eating habits as I'm sure you are aware. If you're happy with yours and she is happy with hers then that's all you need to think about.

lightinthebox · 20/08/2023 15:06

Oh look, another thread where a woman judges her friends eating habits.

pizzaHeart · 20/08/2023 15:06

i think she’s meant it’s like there is a very calorific option of every meal for her and she’s got them all in one day. I don’t think it’s the same as OPs approach as It doesn’t mean that her friend is very restrained in others days.

Why would you “need” to allow yourself a regular day of pigging out? I can’t see there would be any benefits to it (except as a conversation point with your friend I guess as you could compare notes?!)

JudgeRudy · 20/08/2023 15:07

I don't think it odd for families/couples to have these types of routines. I have a takeaway once a fortnight max. When I do I order side dishes and extras not because I'm hungry but because I'm greedy and it's a 'treat'. I know people do this weekly (or more). I can't afford the bill or the calories to do this.
Your friends routine sounds similar. They eat shite at the weekend. That's not unusual. You just spread your treats out more evenly. She binges.

frippu · 20/08/2023 15:09

you're both weird

SummerDayz47 · 20/08/2023 15:10

No I incorporate lots of treats throughout the week so don’t need to do it all in a specific day. I feel better when I eat this way so tend to consider this to ne my brand of self care.

I don’t care for McDonald’s but I do love anything with sugar as the main ingredient!

sorrynotathome · 20/08/2023 15:10

This bizarre attitude to food is why two thirds of adults in the UK are overweight or obese, and setting themselves up for dismal health failures in middle age and beyond.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 20/08/2023 15:12

I have a regular pig out day, it's not timetabled but when I really feel like eating fresh bread and cheese, I'll have nice meats with it and salad/fruit but I limit bread the rest of the time but unfortunately love it

Createausername1970 · 20/08/2023 15:15

I am sort of with you.

If I am out I enjoy my meal and will have starter and/or dessert. But I probably don't eat out more than once a month.

At home I am stricter, I do intermittent fasting and keep carbs to a minimum.

My weakness is chocolate and if I could get away with it I would eat a Cadbury Dime everyday. But my arse cheeks would soon be bursting out my jeans, so I don't.

But low carb and IF is fine mostly, but every now and again we will have a bacon sarnie with WHITE bread for Sunday breakfast, the bread gets dipped in the bacon juices in the frying pan and we might have some crisps or popcorn with a Netflix film in the afternoon.

But we don't "pig-out" to the point of feeling bloated. And we don't do it that often, because both of us do like sweet stuff and therein lies the route to cake and biscuits sneaking into the weekly shop and as we are both a couple of stone lighter than we used to be, we want to keep it that way.

Spirallingdownwards · 20/08/2023 15:17

I am really disappointed we haven't had any I only eat a lettuce leaf and anything more is pigging out posts like MN usually attracts. Come on. Where are those chicken lasts a whole week MNetters?
