To think most people don’t have huge ‘pig out’ days once a fortnight?

Went for brunch with a friend earlier who, when we came to order, said she was still feeling full and bloated from her ‘pig out’ day yesterday. I asked what that was and she said ‘oh once a fortnight, DH and I have a complete pig out day, it’s great. We start off with bacon sarnies in the morning, followed by a McDonald’s for lunch and then loads of crisps/ chocolate/ sweets etc.

I was like oh right and she said ‘do you not ever have a day sometimes where you just eat anything and everything you want?!’ And I said no, not really. She rolled her eyes and said ‘no wonder you’re so skinny’

The thing is, I eat a bar of chocolate pretty much everyday and if I go out for a meal (once every 2-3 weeks) I’ll always get at least 2 courses, sometimes 3 and I don’t care what I eat on those occasions, so I’m hardly an Angel in terms of food. However, no, I don’t ever really let myself have a day at home where I just eat whatever the hell I want for a whole day. I WOULD put on weight.

She seemed shocked and like I was uptight for not doing so, but I don’t think a regular pig out day like that is the norm for most people, is it? Or am I just really uptight?

I get the impression their expression is slightly misleading though, it doesn’t sound like the aim is to eat all day, they just have a fried breakfast, a Macdonalds, then sweets and crisps whenever they fancy the rest of the day. So basically their favorite calorific foods for breakfast and lunch and treat snacks whenever they fancy. You haven’t mentioned tea, I’d imagine it’s the tons of crisps and sweet stuff that makes them feel more bloated than the first two. Basically I don’t see that much of an issue with it tbh.

My personal treat is that my family and I love love steaks so it’s saving enough pounds here and there to include some nice ones in the shopping haha (I find you rarely get good reduced deals on them), I do like a takeaway but I’ll usually chose the first option.

Every so often I have an Iceland day eating crispy, tasty brown food followed by a sweet and creamy dessert. I suppose that's a pig out day, so yes, other people do similarly.

Should add we’re not huge on sweet stuff so there’s that saved in the budget ! By steaks I meant the expensive red meat ones, although I’ll usually divide them by 2, half each, as they tend to be a nice size. It does blow the budget for me though so it’s not planned really. I make a nice pepper sauce with the entrecotes, feeling hungry now ha.
Otherwise lucky that our pet treat is crisps and chips, so those are fine budget wise at least !
In other words I couldn’t afford a pig out day if I wanted to haha

OP: you eat a chocolate bar a day.

Fine have an ‘eat anything you like’ say but then drop the daily Choc bar habit. Your friend probably does not do this. (I don’t!).

You don’t need to ‘defend yourself’ , and neither does your friend.

Most people are flexible and build in tImes when they vary eating: holidays, birthdays, Christmas, the weekend, whatever. Even if most of the time we plan for a healthy diet and a healthy weight.

Do it your way, others do it their way.

JustABitLonger · 21/08/2023 13:45

its not being an under eater to not want to pig out to the point of feeling sick and bloated, ffs

This has all the signs of being a teeny tinies thread. You’re naive if you can’t see it. The obsessing about ‘pigging out’, slipping in that shes ‘skinny’, the OTT shock that anyone might do this, telling us she’s no ‘angel’ because she eats chocolate etc.

So ffs yourself. 🤣

But I’m not surprised to see it’s you so...

I have a regular pig out day, it's not timetabled but when I really feel like eating fresh bread and cheese, I'll have nice meats with it and salad/fruit

Ooh you rebel you.

HarrietJet · 21/08/2023 17:20

Why are people shiteing on about "pigging out" on sandwiches, with added salad and fruit?
For fuck sake 🤣

I think theres a difference (at least psychologically, surely?) of going out for an actual meal once or twice a month, and giving yourself permission to effectively binge on rubbish once a week which is regular
I agree with you.
It seems an entirely healthy outlook to have a neutral approach to food, eat things in moderation and when you have a meal out then you enjoy it without guilt.

The idea of having a set day for binging where the whole purpose is to stuff your face with all the food you deny yourself the rest of the time doesn't seem like a healthy attitude to food

Totally agree with this.

Beersinshropshire · 21/08/2023 18:29

I think if she is feeling bloated and full the next day then she’s really unhealthily overeating.

isitsmallorfaraway · 21/08/2023 18:37

Clearly in a minority but I get it OP! I don't "schedule" pigging out - I do sometimes pig out but scheduling it and making it a thing is bloody weird and hints at a strange relationship with food IMO

This.

It’s not pigging out to eat a 3 course dinner if you only had porridge for breakfast, ran 5k and cycled a few miles during the day.

”FFS”.

I get you, but to be fair, sometimes I can go a couple of months without going out for a meal, they apparently have it religiously every other Saturday or Sunday.

But yes, it’s not that different, I did say that to her as I was trying to defend myself a bit but she was like ‘nahhh, going for a meal isn’t a proper pig out’

I’m wondering if I need to allow myself to have a day like this at home once a month or something but I think for me it would be a slippery slope as I’d probably want to again the next day etc.

Sounds like you're a bit envious of her pig out day!
