Cherries not very nice at the moment

Cherries are my all summer long treat. I always try to buy British as a first preference (for most things where possible). But whether they’re British or not and even from the ‘nice shops’ cherries just don’t seem to taste very nice at the moment. They haven’t for the last couple of months,

They’re either fairly tasteless or have a weird unpleasant earthy flavour.

Is anyone else finding this and what’s going on?

There's a farm nearby that sells them, and at the beginning of the season they were really delicious, but the quality definitely began to wane towards the end of their crop. I haven't bought any others since.

I noticed the British cherries last year were some of the best ever. Plentiful, a long season and seemed a bit cheaper too.

This year seems the opposite. I'm guessing it's weather related.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 20/08/2023 10:51

We’ve noticed this too. DD loves cherries and we buy loads when they’re in season but they’ve been really duff this year. Such a shame when the season is so short.

GCAcademic · 20/08/2023 10:52

I’d noticed the same.

I bought some king cherries from Aldi and they were lovely!

OneTC · 20/08/2023 10:56

Has been a pretty bleak year for fruit in general

HeatherMoores · 20/08/2023 12:05

Yes must be the weather.
Hadn’t thought to try Aldi!

Has to be the weather. Last year all the carrots were dreadful if eaten raw, but they're better this year - I can only assume they prefer the wet weather.

The ones I’ve bought from Aldi recently have been rubbish. They have no flavour.

Theyre usually excellent though so still might be worth a go.

Bananasplitlady · 20/08/2023 12:23

Agree with OneTC - I feel like I keep buying fruit and being disappointed. Cherries haven't been great and melons have been dreadful.

Cornettoninja · 20/08/2023 12:25

It’s the weather. You’ll notice it in other crop based foods too as this years harvest is put into circulation I would have thought.

Cherry season is over now😭…. I had some good ones at the beginning of the season - better to buy direct from farms than the supermarket.

eveoha · 20/08/2023 12:36

Lidl had beautiful British cherries 🍒 so I replaced our broken cherry pitter now seasons over 😐

SuibhneGeilt · 21/08/2023 18:13

I'm new, and er, male - hope that's OK. I joined because this was the only source of current cherry taste I could find. Were they tasting pretty grim or was this an affect of some pain-killer's I have been prescribed.

I see from your comments that they are tasting rather grim. So its the weather, not the pills. Thank you!
