I have a very part time job, but I have not been paid for it.

How long would you go without being paid?

I have asked twice verbally and 4 times by email.

What do I do now? Give an ultimatum? Or just flat out resign? It is not my main job.

sorry forgot to say

YANBU - resign
YABU - don't resign

When were they supposed to pay you?

But yes, resign, no point doing more unpaid work. I'd send a letter before action, then if still no payment, consider issuing a claim on moneyclaim. Can you prove they owe you the money?

Bonniethewestie · 18/08/2023 19:28

I wouldn’t do any more work for them.

Call a meeting to discuss the issue & escalate it if you can. Guessing this is a small company? What did they say/reply when you’ve asked?

Everyone else who works there gets paid every month, but I have never been paid at all. I have never heard of moneyclaim, but I will look into it. I doubt I could prove I have worked there

When did you start working there?

sadlyunpaid · 18/08/2023 19:35

"Dear M
I have still not been paid for months .......( list of months I have worked), or heard from you why not. I am therefore looking for an alternative place to work and will not be returning unless I am paid in the next week
Regards S.U"

How is that? Too abrupt? Does it leave the way open to return if the money suddenly arrives? And am I less likely to get paid if I resign?

I am thinking of following up next week with

Dear M,
I have not heard from you, or been paid, so I will not be returning. I hope everything works out well for you
Regards SU"

This will be leaving them in the lurch with very little notice, but that would happen whenever I left really. Unless I worked a notice period, which seems silly when I am leaving because I have not been paid

When did you start working there?

Well, I wont say quite yet, because I would like to hear some unbiased opinions about how long you would give someone to sort out the paperwork and get you paid, for a very small job, it is normally two evenings a week, sometimes three.

I will say how long I have been there in about 20-30 minutes or so ( after tea!)

OP posts:
Testina · 18/08/2023 19:40

What happened the 2 times you asked verbally, and did you have any response to the 4 emails?

I once missed an increase for months, because I worked for a company that has got too big for itself and was having a “computer says no” problem. All the while my boss was constantly updating me and pushing petty cash as an option at me despite me saying it was fine.

So my next action would depend on what response you’ve actually had.

🙄 that’s just wasting people’s time though..

Testina · 18/08/2023 19:42

Three evenings a week (or even two) isn’t a “very small job” unless you mean you’re literally working an hour at a time.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 18/08/2023 19:42

I would leave. My golden rule is no pay then I don’t work. I would give a reasonable amount of time of one week for a response to any pay queries. I wouldn’t be bothered about giving notice if I had no response! Sound like you’ve been more than reasonable to try and get some resolution to this issue.

I assume that you’ve not worked their less than six weeks? And therefore may have missed a cut off date for payroll, and get paid the missing wages in the next pay date? And you’ve definitely handed in your correct bank details/NI etc?

NEmama · 18/08/2023 19:43

If you've been there longer than two months leave.

CatsOnTheChair · 18/08/2023 19:46

If there have been 2 pay days since you started, and they have had all your bank details, I'd be pretty forceful.

Dear Boss,
I've not been paid for the 17 hours worked since I started on 17 June.
I will not be attending any further shifts until I have a payslip. If back pay isn't forthcoming I will be referring it to ???

Regards

Unpaid

Not sure who you'd go to tho - so that needs finding out before you send the message! ACAS may be able to help.

If there has only been one pay date (but from reading your message this isnt the case), I'd keep asking, but not threaten anything.

Coronationstation · 18/08/2023 19:50

Do you have a contract? What did they agree in terms of pay days when you started the job?

Insommmmnia · 18/08/2023 19:52

I worked a job once where they stopped paying me because of cash flow issues

I gave them 2 pay periods, in my case weekly, and then left

I certainly didn't work a notice period or give them the option that I would. They had already broken the contract so O certainly didn't hold myself to its terms

Ridiculous as that's an important when giving you advice

If you can't be bothered to give all the information, then I won't bother to try and help

when I asked face to face it was just a hold up in admin, but I haven't seen the owner for a while now, and emails and texts have been ignored

Thank you for making a suggestion for the length of time to work with no pay for, and assume admin hold ups are acceptable - that is mostly what I want - I have been working there since March - so coming up to 6 months
