I have a very part time job, but I have not been paid for it.

How long would you go without being paid?

I have asked twice verbally and 4 times by email.

What do I do now? Give an ultimatum? Or just flat out resign? It is not my main job.

Come on, you must know that working for six months without pay is too long?

midnightblue12 · 18/08/2023 20:33

How are you going on not being paid OP?
Is it a family member? Do you work bare minimum hours.
I'm so sorry to hear you're in this position but I think you need to understand that you're enabling.
I wouldn't have worked more then one month with no pay or explanation.

Testina · 18/08/2023 20:34

6 months?! 😳

Testina · 18/08/2023 20:34

How was being told it was 6 months in the first place going to make us all biased? 🤨

Well, quite. Nobody’s going to come along and say 6 months is acceptable, with or without the OP saying that’s how long it’s been. I can’t believe anyone would carry on working all that time with no payment.

Teapleasebobb · 18/08/2023 20:35

So you've been working at a place for 6 months and not yet been paid? Do you have a contract? You might want to contact citizens advice to see what you can do to get your 6 months worth of pay. You can't let that go surely.

sadlyunpaid · 18/08/2023 20:35

well, the owner is very nice, and the other staff seem happy and some have been there for years, so I was prepared to give the benefit of the doubt, but I can see from the responses on here that I should have already resigned. I am going to resign now. With some sadness, as I did enjoy it

WTF?!? 6 months?!? Why the hell have you worked for free for 6 months?

They're not nice if they've not paid you for six months! That's literally the opposite of nice

TheFlis12345 · 18/08/2023 20:38

Oh and I would be demanding full pay owed in my bank account within 48 hours or I would be turning up and making quite the scene in front of customers.

Newestname002 · 18/08/2023 20:38

O It won't hurt for you to speak to Citizens Advice about this. It might be understandable if you got your first pay packet six weeks after starting (perhaps if you missed the first payroll cutoff date) but anything after that - and certainly at the point you are now at is quite ridiculous and I wouldn't still have continued work taking for this length of time without receiving my wages for work done.

Do you have a signed contract of employment or emails or letters or anything confirming your employment? Take those to Citizens Advice. ACAS may also be able to help. Or maybe HMRC might be able to help as your employer should have been reporting tax and NI on your behalf. You'll need your NI Number when you call HMRC.

In the meantime stop working for an employer who hasn't paid you after all this time and ignores your enquiries. Don't go back to them even when you get your money - they're very poor employers and don't deserve your efforts. 🌹

sadlyunpaid · 18/08/2023 20:41

Thank you - I appreciate your advice and the flower. It is upsetting because I enjoyed it and will miss it, and liked the owner, and also feel stupid now, so it makes a difference when someone puts a little flower in their post .

6 months?!? Why the hell didn’t you go to them on the 17th of the first month to ask why you haven’t been paid??

retrainer · 18/08/2023 20:42

You haven't been working there for 6 months, you've been volunteering. Or maybe just hanging out?

I wouldn't resign, I wouldn't contact them at all. Just stop turning up and if/when the boss contacts you, say you aren't working without pay.

And put in a small claims court claim.

sadlyunpaid · 18/08/2023 20:42

I have sent a resignation text. I will send an email saying the same.

I have employed two people who said I hadn’t paid them. One gave me her savings account details, then kept looking in her current account for the payment. The other gave me her partner’s bank account details! This was before banks checked account numbers with name, it was complicated by she had finished with him by the time she found out! Could something like this have happened?

panko · 18/08/2023 20:45

sadlyunpaid · 18/08/2023 20:28

Thank you for making a suggestion for the length of time to work with no pay for, and assume admin hold ups are acceptable - that is mostly what I want - I have been working there since March - so coming up to 6 months

That is ridiculous. Walk. Don't go back. Consider small claims court

Bonniethewestie · 18/08/2023 21:54

6 months is crazy OP! It doesn’t matter if it’s only a couple of hours a week it adds up.

I would absolutely say if you aren’t paid in full you will be pursuing this with the small claims court/referring this to hmrc.

If so, this should have been identified and rectified when OP asked and emailed about it several times over the past months.

whosaidtha · 19/08/2023 08:26

I would say that if you haven't been paid by x date that you will be taking legal action to recover the money owed.

burnoutbabe · 19/08/2023 09:28

Surely the money owed had to be around £1000 now (less tax or ni if due)

Are you actually working? And not volunteering? Do you have agreed hours and pay?

Bonniethewestie · 19/08/2023 13:20

Still a bit worried about this OP. Make sure you get your pay for all the time you worked. Message back here if you need any more help.

It’s easy to let things go on too long and you are obviously very good natured (which is a good thing). I would make sure you speak to admin directly about getting your pay and make sure they know it will be escalated if not received in 5 working days.

CrotchetyQuaver · 19/08/2023 13:52

I wouldn't have resigned as such - just tell them you won't be going in until they've paid all your outstanding wages.
I'd also go to CAB for advice and start the legal process of the small claims thing to recover what you're owed plus costs and interests.

Ikanon · 19/08/2023 13:56

6 months is at least 5 opportunities to pay you. You are right to resign.
