Pull out bin cupboard

WongWifi · 16/08/2023 03:52

I’m putting this here for traffic.

Currently designing a new kitchen but remain undecided about those pull-out bin cupboards.

  • If you have one, do you like it or is it a bit of a bother?
  • What are the things you like/dislike about them?
  • Do you recommend I have one?

AIBU - you gotta have one!
AINBU - don’t do it!

I’m at a loss so any input/advice would be great. Thank you so much!

Got one - absolutely love it!

Whygobald · 16/08/2023 03:55

I love mine. It has two swing bin sized bins in it. When it's closed a sheet of metal kind of seals in any odour. They are a great size and it's really streamlined and tidy.

I use it for standard and recycling waste. I don't have a built bin or caddy for compost which is a pity.

Lucy377 · 16/08/2023 03:58

You gotta have one. Ours is an Ikea kitchen so the cupboard under the sink is pull out door / tray with a space behind.
We've a recycle bin and a common bin in there. So handy. We keep the cleaning stuff in the utility but you would fit a few cleaning things behind the bins too.
Nothing I dislike about it. I'd hate a free standing bin.

Lucy377 · 16/08/2023 04:01

We have a sink and small drainer' sink/compartment and have placed two small lidded caddies in the small side for food waste and composter stuff.

TaylorNotSoSwift · 16/08/2023 04:03

I have one, it’s fab. I also had an insinkerator fitted, it’s a waste disposal unit which churns up food waste so it can go through the standard drainage system - no more food waste caddy. It was about £200 when having a new kitchen installed. The waste system and pull out bin are great additions to the kitchen.

Yeah I like ours and we have bin at the front half and a box at the back we use for paper. Our issue is not having somewhere to put plastics so it ends up having to sit out and be taken out every few hours which isn’t ideal but there isn’t another place we could put a box. Wishing we’d got a bigger pull out bin or something with space for paper and plastic recycling

Thelondonone · 16/08/2023 04:07

I like mine. Please don’t get an insinkerator fitted. It’s a huge cause of fat bergs. No food should go into the water system and it means that food is wasted that could be used as biofuel.

Rainbowshit · 16/08/2023 05:12

Absolutely love ours. You have to get one.

Just wish we'd the room to have two so we could have had separate plastics and paper recycling.

Caspianberg · 16/08/2023 05:34

Yes love ours. Ours is large drawer pull out under sink. We have space for 4 small bins there ( regular, paper, plastic, metal). There is also a shelf above where we can fit small compost bin and store dishwasher tables in tub.
Most can be configured to however many bin combinations as you need

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 16/08/2023 06:04

It was one of the things i was in fence over with mine as I think it worked out about £400 and I was like That's alot for a bin.

I have it split in 2 equal sizes front is normal bin, and I use back for recycling.

I was wary of ones with multiple sections as I think they would be too small to be useful. I also didn't want food in it. That I have a separate bin for on counter top.

I don't regret it at all.

Twizbe · 16/08/2023 06:08

Love ours. It has 3 compartments. Plastics/glass, paper and general waste. We have a separate food waste cady which sits in another cupboard.

It does fill up fast but it’s nice having it all out of sight.

Globules · 16/08/2023 06:30

Don't do it.

Currently awaiting my new worktop to be fitted in my new kitchen, that I didn't get a pull out bin for, so I've recently gone through this myself.

This is my third new kitchen in 7 years. XH insisted on pull out bins in the previous two. Far far too much of a faff. They fill up far too quickly. You have to pull on a cupboard, often with dirty hands, to access it. It makes putting something tiny in the bin, like a tissue, a real event. Open cupboard, pull cupboard...get my drift? You can't just pop something in the bin.

In both the previous 2 kitchens, I ended up putting the proper sized bin back into the kitchen. The pull out ones got on my nerves so much.

Brendabigbaps · 16/08/2023 06:37

Love mine.
ours has 3 bins in it, it’s lined with metal to keep in smells and has a little shelf on top that we keep bin bag rolls, anti vac wipes on etc.
we use one for rubbish, one for recycling and the small one for washing, things like a pair of socks that gets taken off down stairs or the tea towels.
Only annoying thing is the duet that gets down the join of the metal inner and the door

Backtoreality1 · 16/08/2023 06:39

The three compartment ones are a pain in the arse as they are so small you spend every day emptying them - way too small.

Woodstocks · 16/08/2023 06:42

My sister has one and it was really annoying as the individual compartments are so small. My work also has them and they are also small! I would find them way too much faff. We have a large-ish freestanding one where a large bin bag lasts for days and I wouldn’t change it.

icebearforpresident · 16/08/2023 06:43

I got a new kitchen at the end of last year with a bin drawer with 3 bins and it is my favourite part of the kitchen by a mile. I was so excited to get a wine fridge and wish I hadn’t bothered because it never gets the wine cold enough. But my bin drawer, which was literally the last thing we added 5
minutes before we signed off the design, is hands down the best thing I could have gotten.

Aria20 · 16/08/2023 06:56

We are happy with ours - 2 50litre rectangular shaped bins - front is normal rubbish and back is recycling. Our area doesn't separate plastic and paper so only 2 needed, our glass box is outside as we don't often have glass bottles anyway. As others have said a metal sheet comes down over the bins when it's closed to trap smells. And there is a little shelf at the top for bin bags and I also store tin foil and cling film rolls there.

I don't find it a faff opening at all as it just pulls out like a drawer and as general waste is at the front I can just half pull it out and swipe any crumbs etc off the side straight in. Saves having a free standing bin taking up space in kitchen. I wasn't sure they'd be worth the money but I'm glad we did it.

londonrach · 16/08/2023 06:58

Love ours...best thing we did

Diddykong · 16/08/2023 07:00

I like mine but wish I'd had two fitted. Mine has two larger bins and two smaller bins at the back but the smaller ones aren't useful so I just store bin bags and other things in them. This means all the cardboard and soft plastics get stored elsewhere.

I agree with the dirty handle issue. I would install a foot pull on the bottom of it so you don't have to touch the handle in the middle of preparing a chicken.

Amazongirl9 · 16/08/2023 07:02

Love mine. It’s in a 600 unit with 2 large bins for waste and recycling and a food waste smaller bin with an extra lid. Would def have one again if space allowed.

Backtothe90splease · 16/08/2023 07:03

I definitely want one fitted when we get a new kitchen. I'd get a 2 compartment one as with 3 kids we fill the bins quite quickly.

My current bins are old and disgusting and smell pretty terrible even after cleaning but I'm holding off replacing them for that mythical new kitchen...

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 16/08/2023 07:03

I hate them. The bins either make poor use of the space in the cupboard or are small meaning they need to be emptied very frequently. I'd much rather have an extra cupboard or set of drawers for storage and a separate large kitchen bin.

ChristmasCurry · 16/08/2023 07:08

Just ripped ours out - too small and the lid kept jamming, this was removed months ago, was also difficult to clean - replaced it for a large double bin by the kitchen door now.

cptartapp · 16/08/2023 07:14

We have one with two bins and it's fantastic, but it's big enough. And we have plenty of other cupboard space.
I didn't want a freestanding bin to spoil the look of the kitchen personally.

IcecreamsundaeonSunday · 16/08/2023 07:15

Very pleased with ours, but make sure it is big - ours is actually 2 side by side in one cupboard - very big in total. I hate those tiny ones that are only the size of a small cylindrical bucket (sometimes come across them in holiday lets, full after half a day!)
