Pull out bin cupboard

I’m putting this here for traffic.

Currently designing a new kitchen but remain undecided about those pull-out bin cupboards.

  • If you have one, do you like it or is it a bit of a bother?
  • What are the things you like/dislike about them?
  • Do you recommend I have one?

AIBU - you gotta have one!
AINBU - don’t do it!

I’m at a loss so any input/advice would be great. Thank you so much!

Love ours. I always recommend them!

daffodilandtulip · 16/08/2023 07:24

Best thing ever.

I have two, as my area is rubbish with recycling and you don't have to split anything. I use the front one for general waste, so I prep on the counter above and can just wipe waste into the bin. I absolutely love not seeing bins in my kitchen.

Singleandproud · 16/08/2023 07:28

I have a narrow cupboard sized one for recycling and wish I'd had two fitted but they are crazy expensive.

When my parents got their kitchen done they had the cupboard fitted but bought the bin and mechanism separately online and saved well over £100.

Idunno8 · 16/08/2023 07:29

They are brilliant, strongly recommend working one into the design.

brainstories568 · 16/08/2023 07:31

We've got a small pull out cupboard one which we use for the general non recycling bin then we've got a little one at the back where we put plastic bags that need to be recycled at shops. The shelf above holds the food recycling bin plus the bin bags etc. Then we have our 2 bins for the paper and plastic/glass recycling under the stairs. We had our kitchen redone about 2 years ago (on 4th kitchen in 7 years due to moving house) and this is our best kitchen, mostly due to the amount of drawers and use of space.

DiaNaranja · 16/08/2023 07:31

We have a double one, one for paper and card, one for plastics cans and glass as that all goes in our green bin together. Then we have a normal bin for general waste (but it's a pretty Orla kiely one so I quite like looking at it 😄)

bibbingo · 16/08/2023 07:36

Love mine! Ours is just a bin, no separate recycling compartments etc so fits a normal sized bin bag. Much prefer having it hidden away than an ugly bin taking up space in the rest of the kitchen. Bonus is that our toddler can't get to it 😂

PerspiringElizabeth · 16/08/2023 07:37

I see I'm in the minority but I fucking hate them. Give me a foot pedal any day. Big bin which can take at least a few days of waste. Currently designing our new kitchen and really find the integrated bins shit, small, unhygienic and very uncool 😄

Pottedpalm · 16/08/2023 07:39

I love ours. It’s the size of a single base unit and has two large and two small bins . I hate freestanding bins which are always an afterthought and spoil the look of a kitchen. Having a large built in bin was a priority when we designed our kitchen, along with most of the storage being in pull out drawers -a complete game changer.

Whitewolf2 · 16/08/2023 07:40

I love ours, we have 2 decent sized bins, front for rubbish, back for recycling. They’re at the end of the cupboard row, by the back door so easy to take out. If I know I’m going to prep meat I just open it up first so don’t have to touch the handle! Would never go back to a different bin.

Maybe do more research. Our bin storage is large, the volume of a base unit. How is it any more unhygienic than a free standing bin? Ours gets emptied daily anyway, as who wants several days worth of waste sitting in the room?
And uncool? It’s a bin..

BarrelOfOtters · 16/08/2023 07:47

We have one that’s a single bin, swing bin liner size. It’s great. Didn’t want the small fiddle ones.kind of wish we’d lost a bit of cupboard space for a double one for recycling…but in reality we have a utility with recycling boxes that’s only a few steps away.

the bin is hidden away, doesn’t smell, only fills up as quickly as a swing bin and saves floor space.

I like ours, but the two bins crack and break very easily and are expensive to replace £50/£60.

LovelyDaaling · 16/08/2023 07:54

We love ours (2 bins). They take standard bin bags so don't need emptying too often. I hate seeing a lovely kitchen with a freestanding bin.

TheDogsMother · 16/08/2023 07:58

We have one with a good sized bin for waste and two for recycling. It is a single base unit and keeps all the rubbish out of sight. I'd hate a freestanding bin as it would always be in the way of something.

grannycake · 16/08/2023 08:01

I have just had a 60cm drawer with 4 30 litre bins (under the sink) - general rubbish, paper/card, plastic/can & food waste. I empty into larger bins outside in a bin store. Really pleased with it - Iused to have a bag of mixed reccling in the kitchen whoch had to be sorted daily, a large rubbish bin which I used to empty weekly and a food wate bin that also needed emptying 2/3 times a week

Now the food waste is big enough for 5 days or so, the rubbish is still weekly and the other recycling is every other day. Less work and no bins taking up space i my kitchen

ScoopyDoo · 16/08/2023 08:02

I have a 400mm wide one that pulls out like a drawer, two even sized bins front and back. Plenty big enough. There’s only two of us so we often empty the rubbish bin before it’s full as otherwise would sit there for weeks! Back bin used for soft plastics, which currently our local authority don’t collect so have to take to a supermarket. Amazes me how much soft plastic we gather, separating it saves huge amounts of bin space. Other recycling boxes are just outside kitchen door so we don’t need more than that. It’s not in anyway a faff, pull out a drawer rather than lift a bin lid and saves floor space in our kitchen.
if we had a freestanding bin it would be in front of a radiator, which I didn’t fancy.

colouroftherainbow · 16/08/2023 08:03

Have them in a drawer similar to picture PP has posted. 3 compartments, all hold a decent amount of rubbish - less than 2 days worth, wouldn’t want more as we would empty alternate days at least (food waste emptied daily or more often).

It takes up a drawer but we have nowhere in our kitchen for a freestanding bin to be so that would be really inconvenient

VinEtFromage · 16/08/2023 08:07

I'm redoing my kitchen, but I can't extend or knock through, so it'll still be tiny. So I can have either a slimline dishwasher OR a pull out bin.

can't decide...

tgere is nowhere else to put either!

upthread someone was complaining about having to pull open the cupboard & then the bin. You don't, if you buy the ones that have them fitted to the door/drawer.

think carefully about the configuration. My friend has one that has one large for waste & 3 small, which might work if any of them could put the recycling in the correct bins! But they can't, so the 3 small ones end up a mix of paper plastic glass🙇🏻‍♀️

if I go for hidden bin, I'll go for 2 bins as large as possible (won't be huge as only 40cm space).

but then the dishes have to sit on the work top. 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

We love ours and got it much cheaper from amazon. The bin sizes are smaller than a normal bin but you get used to it.

WeWillLookBack · 16/08/2023 08:12

Hate to admit it - but love ours. We have just had a new kitchen - and the bin was about £400. I said no - who the hell spends £400 on a bin !!! But DH really wanted one. So we spent £400 on a bin.

Make sure you get a good size one - we have 2 sections that both lift out. So one bin / one recycling and easy cleaning.

I do still walk to where the old bin lived

Winewednesday · 16/08/2023 08:23

The one we have is two compartments and can be lifted out to clean and empty etc. We paid £120 on amazon and the fitter was happy to fit.

Don't do it.

Currently awaiting my new worktop to be fitted in my new kitchen, that I didn't get a pull out bin for, so I've recently gone through this myself.

This is my third new kitchen in 7 years. XH insisted on pull out bins in the previous two. Far far too much of a faff. They fill up far too quickly. You have to pull on a cupboard, often with dirty hands, to access it. It makes putting something tiny in the bin, like a tissue, a real event. Open cupboard, pull cupboard...get my drift? You can't just pop something in the bin.

In both the previous 2 kitchens, I ended up putting the proper sized bin back into the kitchen. The pull out ones got on my nerves so much.

Three kitchens in seven years?! Wtf?

We had a new kitchen last year and spent far too long debating this. In the end we decided we’d rather have the extra cupboard space.

minipie · 16/08/2023 08:44

I have one and love it. Two 34L bins (normal and recycling) in a 600 wide cupboard.

If you can’t fit one that large, or if you need more types of bin, it may not work so well.

Caspianberg · 16/08/2023 08:47

We have ikea pull out ones in holiday let. They were really reasonable price.
