Pull out bin cupboard

WongWifi · 16/08/2023 03:52

I’m putting this here for traffic.

Currently designing a new kitchen but remain undecided about those pull-out bin cupboards.

  • If you have one, do you like it or is it a bit of a bother?
  • What are the things you like/dislike about them?
  • Do you recommend I have one?

AIBU - you gotta have one!
AINBU - don’t do it!

I’m at a loss so any input/advice would be great. Thank you so much!

I have one with two compartments that I use for recycling, one for paper, one for the rest. I have a normal bin for general waste as I didn't like the idea of using it as a general waste bin.

Emmaemmeline · 16/08/2023 08:56

Love ours !
It has 2 largish bins , one blue sack (recycling plastics , paper etc ) one black sack for the other stuff and a food caddy complete with lid hangs neatly over the side of this one
Push the door shut , and a lid slides over . There’s enough space on top of the lid for the rolls of bIn bags to be kept

I'm redoing my kitchen, but I can't extend or knock through, so it'll still be tiny. So I can have either a slimline dishwasher OR a pull out bin.

can't decide...

tgere is nowhere else to put either!

upthread someone was complaining about having to pull open the cupboard & then the bin. You don't, if you buy the ones that have them fitted to the door/drawer.

think carefully about the configuration. My friend has one that has one large for waste & 3 small, which might work if any of them could put the recycling in the correct bins! But they can't, so the 3 small ones end up a mix of paper plastic glass🙇🏻‍♀️

if I go for hidden bin, I'll go for 2 bins as large as possible (won't be huge as only 40cm space).

but then the dishes have to sit on the work top. 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

Dishwasher. Without a doubt.

Blossomtoes · 16/08/2023 09:26

Definitely dishwasher. No contest.

We have one with two bins and it's fantastic, but it's big enough. And we have plenty of other cupboard space.
I didn't want a freestanding bin to spoil the look of the kitchen personally.

This is exactly my view.

icebearforpresident · 16/08/2023 09:53

Give me a bun drawer over a dishwasher any day. We worked with 2 kitchen designers at wren when we did our kitchen, who were both lovely but couldn’t get their head around the fact I didn’t want a dish washer. My argument was I used the one the kitchen we ripped out (which was in the house when we bought a year earlier) for storage and although not my favourite job in the world, I don’t mind standing washing the dishes with some music or a podcast on. It’s a bit of peace and quiet for me.

Just to reiterate, I love my bin drawer.

Shroedy · 16/08/2023 10:01

We have two 50L bins and two smaller bins in ours. They're ace, keeps everything neat, they're functional and no issues with keeping them clean or smells etc (the bins themselves lift out).

Ihaveausername · 16/08/2023 10:05

We have a 3 compartment one. In our previous house we had a 2 compartment freestanding one and when designing our new kitchen wanted a more streamlined look. This one is bigger than the previous 2 compartment one and is hidden away and looks just like a cupboard.

DiscoBeat · 16/08/2023 10:08

We've sort of compromised - pull out bin under the sink for all recycling and a smallish touch top Simple Human bin for refuse.

ClementWeatherToday · 16/08/2023 10:09

@icebearforpresident I was so excited to get a wine fridge and wish I hadn’t bothered because it never gets the wine cold enough.

Apparently wine isn't "supposed" to be served fridge cold but a few degrees above that - you can taste more if it's less cold? Like how you shouldn't put ice in whisky (only a little splash of water).

https://www.cda.co.uk/wine-coolers/recommended-serving-temperatures/

But of course we're all used to drinking really cold wine so for lots of people that's what we prefer! (I also suspect the temperature advice is less applicable to the sort of plonk I drink 🤣) But you should be able to turn your wine fridge down to about 5 degrees which is fridge cold, they usually have a thermostat in them.

Recommended Serving Temperatures | CDA Appliances

Ever wondered what temperature you should store your different types of wine at? CDA's wine guide has solved that for you

We’ve just had our kitchen done and couldn’t fit one in, it’s my biggest regret! I used to have one and absolutely loved it. I’ve been looking for racks I can retrofit but the only suitable cupboard is reduced depth so it’s proving difficult.

I don’t agree with previous comments about them being too small, I think the massive freestanding bins a lot of people have are gross. Stuff sits in them for days going mouldy before they’re full, I much prefer a smaller bin that gets emptied more regularly and is out of sight.

Caspianberg · 16/08/2023 10:58

I also don’t want a bin to fit a whole week of waste in. Even with our small general bin (it’s 15L),if it’s still only half full after 2-3 days I empty it. It would smell otherwise

Wannabegreenfingers · 16/08/2023 11:17

I have one. It has two compartments. So normal rubbish and recycling. Each section is the same size as a stand alone bin. Neither section has a lid, but the draw has a built in shelf, so no smells waft around. I absolutely love mine and would never go back to stand alone bins in the kitchen.

Don't do it.

Currently awaiting my new worktop to be fitted in my new kitchen, that I didn't get a pull out bin for, so I've recently gone through this myself.

This is my third new kitchen in 7 years. XH insisted on pull out bins in the previous two. Far far too much of a faff. They fill up far too quickly. You have to pull on a cupboard, often with dirty hands, to access it. It makes putting something tiny in the bin, like a tissue, a real event. Open cupboard, pull cupboard...get my drift? You can't just pop something in the bin.

In both the previous 2 kitchens, I ended up putting the proper sized bin back into the kitchen. The pull out ones got on my nerves so much.

This is what’s worrying me.

Thank you so much to all for your input! Vast majority are clearly in favour.

I should have mentioned that I do have a garbage shoot in the kitchen area but we use that to throw the daily rubbish at the end of the day. It’s rather small so will fit a small supermarket bag full. Not sure if that makes any difference though.

My sister has one and I loathe it , definitely wouldn’t have one in my own house ,

RelativePitch · 16/08/2023 12:52

Just had our kitchen redone. We have a pull out bin, 2 bins in the compartment. It's brilliant.

Globules · 16/08/2023 15:08

Ooooh. This looks a game changer. What do you love about it? How often do you need to clean the inside of the lids?

CointreauVersial · 16/08/2023 15:18

Love ours! Especially as now we have to separate our rubbish into recycling/refuse/paper there just wasn't anywhere sensible to have a massive row of bins. These are neatly hidden away.

We have a pull-out rack with two medium-sized rectangular bins. The refuse one at the back lasts all week; the recycling at the front we probably empty every couple of days (paper bin we keep elsewhere).

The bins came with lids, but we ditched those pretty quickly. The cupboard door keeps any whiffs at bay (and no food goes into them anyway - we have a countertop caddy for that).

Agree it can be tricky to open the door with grubby hands, but I can manage pretty well with a little finger/elbow.

Peony654 · 16/08/2023 15:26

We just bought a Brabantia pull out bin and installed it in an existing cupboard, was much cheaper than the 'bin cupboards' sold by the kitchen company. It is nice having it tucked away

WongWifi · 16/08/2023 16:03

I just realised I wrote shoot instead of chute! How awfully embarrassing. Not sure what I was thinking (clearly I wasn’t!).

Love mine, it has two really decent bins in it. I take the point of a previous respondent who said they were too small, make sure they are a decent size. I also have a waste disposal.
The only other consideration is mine takes up a 60cm base unit, not a problem for me because my kitchen is big and I don’t lack cupboard space but my younger son has a petite kitchen and in my opinion it takes up valuable storage for him however he has a dog and likes to keep the rubbish where she can’t disturb it.

My kitchen will be mid-sized. After reading the comments here, I've requested the kitchen man to include the bin cupboard in the plans and will see how much room it does take up before finally deciding.

@Globules I love the way it looks and the capacity of all 3 compartments.

Really easy to empty, and you can get replacement parts if needed.

I only ever need to occasionally wipe the inside rim and top opening.

When I empty the food caddy I sometimes need to pop in the sink for a wash (biodegradable food sacks so not a lot of mess)
