To find being a person really weird

I know that sounds odd, but every now and then it hits me how weird it is just being a person and having a mind. Does anyone else ever get this?

Erm...no.
Quite often in my life I've been overwhelmed by the futility of it all, though.

steff13 · 16/08/2023 00:30

Weird compared to being a tree or...?

off · 16/08/2023 00:32

Yeah it's odd. The universe arranged bits of itself into thinking meat and now the universe can contemplate itself.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/08/2023 00:32

Yes.

See also the vastness of space.

And imagining that there are 7 billion people on the planet, a good number of whom are probably also thinking the same thing.

I mean, why are we here? Why are we conscious? How?

I hear you OP.

Stickykidney · 16/08/2023 00:33

Yes super weird I get that. Especially seeing people with no clothes on .. like myself in the mirror I'm like .. I'm a bag of meat just going round thinking things I do and think matter. Weird. Animals look more 'on purpose '

calmcoco · 16/08/2023 00:37

Yes. It's the ability to think so much more than any other creature, and all the thinking and rituals and control that I find weird.

I've been in a very stressful situation where all the humans behaved incredibly reasonably and politely and it blew my mind how controlled we all stayed.

I'm grateful for the veneer, but worry it is thin!

Gagaandgag · 16/08/2023 00:52

Yes, I hear you!

Seagullchippy · 16/08/2023 00:54

Tiring, too!

JustOneMoreBiscuit55 · 16/08/2023 00:57

I sometimes find it weird looking in the mirror and thinking that is me. Like I'm suddenly aware I'm inside my own head. I don't know how else to explain it, but it is all very weird if you think too much about it.

guiltyfeethavegotnorythym · 16/08/2023 00:57

I hate that we think we are entitled to destroy another's habitat , like why did Americans(and others) build homes to intrude on bears space ?

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 16/08/2023 00:59

Yes! Having watched Earth this evening I'm so mind blown by the fact that in a few centuries man probably won't even exist and the planet will be home to animals that don't care about our lives, technology etc. I can't begin to comprehend it all!

Absolutely and totally all this when I watch it also

Ladylalaboo1 · 16/08/2023 01:04

I often think why am I THIS mind and person like why is this the body and mind that was chosen for me to be conscious in and experience ? Weird to explain haha

Ducklake · 16/08/2023 01:04

Yes. What actually are we? Where is the “I” that is thinking this?
What is our consciousness and where is it?

Also why does anything exist at all? Why even does existence exist? Why is there something instead of nothing? And what actually is nothing? What is it?

I’m having a full blown existential crisis now. Well done.

WeetabixTowels · 16/08/2023 01:05

Are you stoned OP?

fullbloom87 · 16/08/2023 01:06

Yes it's weird. The weirdest thing though is some people are still so sceptical of anything unusual, like aliens. The afterlife etc.
I think those people just don't think that deeply.

Booklover40 · 16/08/2023 01:09

Existentialism? It’s normal.

I sometimes get a sort of sickly feeling that hits me when I suddenly realise I’m just a dot in the universe - the same sort of homesick feeling you got when you were at school and home time seemed a long way away or you were in unfamiliar surroundings.

It would be weird not to be completely flummoxed by what it all means / why we’re here occasionally!

But what is the answer?

Yes. And I find it even weirder that humans have strong personalities and likes, dislikes, interests, favourite foods, families, friends etc etc then like a light switch being turned off one day we won’t exist anymore. I do wonder why humans have been gifted self awareness and all of this character just to in the end die. And then when you think of the chances of even being born in the first place.

But what is the answer?

Well, this is the reason many people turn to religion - it’s hard for anyone who wants proper answers based in scientific fact to understand but the bible and other religious texts have the answers that many people desire to all these questions i.e. God made us in seven days!

This is what I was told growing up, but then I always wanted to know “but who made God?”

ehupo7 · 16/08/2023 01:19

I think about all this a lot. I never used to, and now I can’t stop thinking about it.

Ducklake · 16/08/2023 01:20

Yes I can see why people turn to religion.
Exactly if a creator is needed to explain why everything exists, who created the creator? It’s not logical is it. I don’t know how you can be a logical person and believe in god. Or believe for sure there isn’t.
There is no explanation.
Perhaps god can be a word for ‘everything’.
