Oh and fucking Halloween. If I didn’t have kids who adore it, I wouldn’t bother with it. I can’t wait til I don’t have to do anything for it. I’m a Halloween grinch.

Tartareistasty · 16/08/2023 10:07

Check the dates on them. It might be left over stock.

Tubs are now in all year round

lovewoola · 16/08/2023 10:08

because muppets want to buy them

RedToothBrush · 16/08/2023 10:08

Mince pies appeared on 1st September in our local supermarket. (I'd been in the day before and they weren't there).

So I'm not surprised. Looking forward to mince pie season tbh!

Is it just Asda for the big supermarkets right now then? Usually they all start at a similar time

The works are selling Christmas craft and have been selling it since the 10th of July
At least my local one is

lovewoola · 16/08/2023 10:10

This is it. You’d be surprised at how high sales of seasonal lines can be months before the event.

it's annoying because if you don't buy into it it's sold out

lovewoola · 16/08/2023 10:11

Not seen anything in Waitrose or M&S

lovewoola · 16/08/2023 10:12

Why isn't extra stock ordered then so it is still available on Xmas Eve?

Because the people who shop early think Christmas is over then!

Annaishere · 16/08/2023 10:13

If I started buying chocolate now I would just eat it all. I do think it’s nice to start shopping early though. I started in October last year and was still running around last minute and running out of money

lovewoola · 16/08/2023 10:14

A lot of Christmas food goes off before Christmas - keep an eye on the dates of cakes and mince pies.

Yep, I see so much food that expires before xmas day.

Highly unlikely it’s leftover stock. The BB date wouldn’t stretch this far for most of the items there. Eg the a lot of the Celebrations festive pouches from last year were BB 02/23. Quality Street were 06/23. Some of the Puds batches were 03/23. Even if some batches were manufactured later it’s still unlikely they’d be in date now.

Impulse lines sell out first typically and they’d be the first to be RTC after Christmas is over (if any stock was left over). Anything which any sort of Christmas graphic will have been RTC. It isn’t the same situation like with leftover Lindor boxes which will be on retailers planograms in their confectionery aisle anyway, so would just be simply moved over there.

Plus all this stuff is date checked on a rota basis. Please don’t spread misinformation.

I find Christmas the most depressing time of year. It truly sees me struggling and having to dig deep to not fall into depression.

Christmas in August makes my heart completely sink. It can do one, big time.

I have a box of Quality Street on the shelf next to me. Its still wrapped in wrapping paper from last Christmas.. was a gift that didn't get given.

By the timing of these that are out already now, I might be able to get away with just keeping this one for next Christmas 😂

1 September is when our shops starting bringing out the tinsel.... so this is extra early indeed.

Sheepsheepie · 16/08/2023 10:29

131 days to go….less than 19 weeks which means only 18 weekends of shopping left 🤣😂

CarlaH · 16/08/2023 10:31

Retailers put a lot of work into their forecasts for seasonal lines each year, but the aim is a clean sell through.

It makes more sense to order x amount (which is still an increase on last year) which has a good variety until 1/2 days before Christmas and sell through your last item on Christmas Eve, than order too much and end up having to reduce everything left with any sort of Christmas graphic on Boxing Day.

It’s a balancing act that is a lot harder than it looks. Forecasting can only go so far- you can use every LY sales figure possible to predict, but it’s ultimately just a prediction.

Much harder when it’s fresh items though rather than ambient. At least with chocolate even if it doesn’t all sell, you know you have a few months to sell it. Turkeys etc are much more expensive and after Christmas, as you know, the demand just disappears. Again, that’s why turkeys will sell out early on Christmas Eve and you’ll hear stories of Christmas being ruined. Ordering too much stock is a liability.

A few years ago we went shopping for a turkey on Christmas Eve (don't ask why) and were astonished to see that in M & S there were loads to be had and not one of them marked down in price.

I have no idea what they did with them all. It was mid-morning though so maybe they reduced them just before closing.

Disturbia81 · 16/08/2023 10:32

I hate this early showing of seasonal items. I love Christmas but I don't wanna see traces of it until late November.
It just feels so money oriented and like making time travel too quickly.

Disturbia81 · 16/08/2023 10:35

And yeah with Halloween, Easter and Christmas sometimes us last minute shoppers can't get what we need, but there's plenty of us. How can it make more sense to have stuff available in august but not on the eve of the actual day..

BooksAndHooks · 16/08/2023 10:37

Same every year. I always buy the extra large tins of Quality Street from Costco in the summer holidays. First Christmas sweets always come out now then Halloween then the full Christmas range.

Then people are shocked every single year when the Easter stock comes out on Boxing Day. It is the same every year.

OhYetAnotherBrickInTheWall · 16/08/2023 10:37

Thank you @BrutusMcDogface

Same with back to school things. Both my dc have left school now, but it's worse now. It used to be the first week of the 6 week holiday they would start, which was bad enough I thought. But now, before the kids have even broken up for the long holiday, our shops have all back all these back to school signs, stands and specials on.

lovewoola · 16/08/2023 10:40

@CarlaH I shop in M&S, as do my parents. They always cater for the last minute shoppers!

lovewoola · 16/08/2023 10:41

Loads of people do their main xmas food shop on xmas eve

I'm not shocked by it, I expect it these days. But it still pisses me off and makes me dig my heels in even more to wait until.the appropriate season before purchasing anything.

Obviously the tiniest of drops in the biggest of oceans but I like to imagine one day there will be a great swell of shoppers who ignore Christmas till Advent and Easter till Lent, continuing to buy Christmas and Easter things right through those seasons (i.e. until 6 January and throughout the week that begins on Easter Sunday) and retailers will be stuck with a load of stuff they can't sell so they don't start making it available till a reasonable time.

I know it's never going to happen but I can dream!

beguilingeyes · 16/08/2023 10:42

When I'm Queen/Prime Minister I'm going to make it illegal for anything Christmas related to be advertised until we've at least got Bonfire Night out of the way. Similarly Halloween before October 1st.
It's one long commercial season and I'm sick of it. Let's enjoy the summer at least (what there is of it).
