"Side hustle"

I absolutely fucking hate this turn of phrase?

Do you mean part time job? Say that then.

Do you mean "being self employed"? Why not say that like a grown up?

I just hate it, I don't know if it's meant to sound cute or faux "street" or what. Never heard of a man with a "side hustle"

Side hustles usually aren't second jobs
ie matched betting, reviews that sort of stuff
It's just passing time doing something that makes money

However like you say, cake making etc is a little bit more of a JOB Grin

GoodMorningHoney · 15/08/2023 23:24

I feel like it would de-mean how important my second job was to me if someone was to refer to it as a side hustle, it feels cheap. I’m self employed, highly qualified.

Sounds like an illegal, dodgy deal type of job to me!

That's how it sounds to me, too.

yogasaurus · 16/08/2023 10:12

Yeah, they’re never real jobs. Just MLM instahun boss babes nonsense

Not any of the side hustles I know of. To me it’s usually self employment using a skill that the person does on top of their day job. My side hustle is writing books, a friend teaches Zumba in the evenings, another makes wedding cakes. We all have well-paid day jobs that our side hustles can’t match in terms of income stream, but we do earn enough from the hustle to make a significant difference to lifestyle.

Otherwise known as a Guvvie job where I live. The Governor being oneself. Working for yourself. Usually cash in hand.

All the people I know who talk about side hustles are men, and as far from "Insta-babes" as its possible to get. Lots in the FIRE community, people trying to pay off debt, or otherwise looking to set up alternative income streams but not yet at the stage of calling it a full on business.
