Covid Dilemma, 1st day of school

I've caught Covid – probably at the Fringe last weekend when I took DS to some shows. Started feeling unwell on Thursday morning, felt like a stinking head cold. Tested positive on Friday. Tested DS who is 5 and he was negative.

I've self isolated myself as I don't want DH or DS to get it. Both are still testing negative. I'm still feeling horrendous 5 days in with all the usual symptoms plus jaw and tooth pain, earache and muted hearing etc.

We are in Scotland and my son starts P1 on Wednesday this week. I seriously doubt I'll be negative in 2 days… what should I do!? Surely I can't stay home and miss his first day of going to school? Should I mask up (which I have been doing when I've had to go downstairs) and go to the school gate and let my husband take him in?

What would you do?
Am I being unreasonable to want to be there while I have Covid!?

NHS staff are now being told to come in if they have covid, unless they work with very vulnerable patients. I wouldn't have tested and would treat it just like a cold.

@typingcake of course you're all right to drop your DC off and pick him up again at the end of the day. It’s virtually impossible to catch Covid outside unless you are standing next to the same person for 10-15 minutes and coughing or sneezing directly at them that whole time.

Also DH is very CEV (organ recipient and with an unrelated chronic lifelong condition) and he would have no issue with you waiting in the playground – he’d even come over and say hi! The only issue is that I don’t think you should really be in the classroom, that would be a bit unfair on the other DCs (and their parents) so if you think your DS might have a meltdown perhaps your DH should go too so he can take your son in? Which is one option you suggested in your OP. Hope your DS has a great day.

Did you see the part where her son has suspected ASD? Her son will feel comfortable and settled having her there when he goes to school. If she stays at home he might have a meltdown before he even walks out of the door. Did that not occur to you?

OP my dd has suspected ASD too, and she’s starting full time school this time too. She would
definitely be very distressed and have a meltdown if I didn’t go with her. She likes routine, and her routine is that I have taken her to the nursery at the same school for the past two years. If I’m not there on her first day of reception it will be a nightmare for her.

OP has not mentioned anywhere that her presence is necessary to keep her child in a routine and calm. Only that she doesn't want to miss the first day. She has said that induction day did not go well and that she had to sneak off without her child seeing. I would think that dealing with a potential meltdown at home rather than the school playground would be preferable?

While I still don’t feel 100% I have tested negative for Covid, twice today! Now and 2 hours ago. Using tests from different kits.

so I will be going up to school tomorrow to see him in on his first day 💛

Good luck Op, you'll be itching for hometime.
