AIBU to think I've been scammed?

Husband and I have been talking about getting a small shed for the garden. Lo and behold, ads started appearing on my FB feed. There was one for a 6x4 plastic one for £40 including delivery. There were a couple of hundred comments all saying they'd received them and were happy, so I ordered one & paid for it. This was a few weeks ago.

Today I got a delivery. It was a gold coloured chain with a sun on it which opens up and inside it says "you are my sunshine".

I certainly haven't ordered it! Nothing on it to say where its from. Did an image search on it & saw a few results saying "ordered a shed got a necklace".

Please tell me I haven't been really daft/gullible! Have any of you lovely MNers received a £40 shed from FB??

This sounds very strange!

littlebabycheeses99 · 11/08/2023 21:59

How would you be able to buy a shed for £40, surely they'd cost quite a bit more than that?!

Totalwasteofpaper · 11/08/2023 22:05

£40 for a shed...

Mine was 8 by 12 but a bargain at £750.... i would be amazed if its not s scam

liveforsummer · 11/08/2023 22:07

She'd cost a lot more than £40 so based on that alone I'd assume scam

WhiteFire · 11/08/2023 22:07

You've been scammed I'm afraid. How did you pay?

OlympicProcrastinator · 11/08/2023 22:08

Those comments are on all scammy Facebook sales ads and are all fake and from made up accounts. Of course you’ve been scammed. Sorry.

Hivaluegirl · 11/08/2023 22:09

Claim via your bank

Theyrethreetheyresixtheyreninetheyreeight · 11/08/2023 22:10

A plastic shed that size is over £300.
If something sounds too good to be true it generally is.
I hope you do manage to get your money back. Good luck.

Motorcycleemptyness · 11/08/2023 22:10

This is very funny. I don’t understand why you would be sent a necklace though? Why wouldn’t they just send nothing at all? Can anyone explain?

love the idea of ‘you are my sunshine!’ from the scammers.

FurbleSocks · 11/08/2023 22:11

Scam I'm afraid. Debit or credit do a chargeback/section 75 with your card provider.

Happiestonthebeach · 11/08/2023 22:12

My guess is that op will have done a bank transfer? Hence no refund usually available from bank like on a credit or debit card?

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 11/08/2023 22:13

The alarm bells would have started ringing at the price. If a price seems too good to be true, then it often isn't true.

Sounds like you have indeed been scammed. Get on to your bank straight away to see if they can get your money back. We got scammed a few years ago trying to buy garden furniture (over £1000) and the bank did get us the money back after a few weeks, even though it was a debit card.

ChilliPixie · 11/08/2023 22:18

It's definitely a scam. Similar thing happened to me, searched for a designer bag, found a very good website with said bag, normal sale price though, so didn't think anything of it. Bought it on a credit card, a ring turns up instead 😤😡

Currently going through CC dispute procedure.

Frustrating because I still need the bag for a present.

TregunaMekoides · 11/08/2023 22:19

It's a cliché for a reason:
If it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Normally scammers send something of a much lower value so they have tracking/proof of a delivery- although I wouldn't expect a shed to be sent through the post as normal so not too sure in this situation

CringeLicious · 11/08/2023 22:22

I can get you a replacement for just £40. Please send me your credit card details.

Netaporter · 11/08/2023 22:26

@Musicthegreatcommunicator you won’t be able to claim under s75 as the amount is too low even if you paid on a credit card. These scammers aren’t daft ;-)

However thinking you were gonna get a brand new non-Barbie dream house-sized shed for £40 is another matter. Chalk it up to experience.

wineschmine · 11/08/2023 22:36

I was scammed a few months back. Value around £100, everything looked legit so I just paid by debit card.

Once I looked more closely at it all and realised I'd been scammed, I initially thought I wouldn't get my money back as I paid via debit card, but I did. I was very surprised.

Does anybody know how the refund works? Did the bank just refund me out their own pocket? Or would they have been able to claw it back from the scammer?

Hopefully the latter.

Suggestives · 11/08/2023 22:36

Seems almost everything on Facebook, either marketplace or main feed posts, is a scam these days. I saw that shed ad .. seemed very legit. I generally try checking Trustpilot with the name of the supplier and in this case they were there with clear indication it was a scam.

For the various gadget ads that pop up, I find that a search on eBay will normally reveal the same item at a significantly lower cost with better buyer protection.

I've stopped buying anything on Facebook unless I'm picking it up in person. I drove 270 miles last weekend to buy something I wanted even though the seller had numerous independent references .. I just wasn't prepared to take the chance with delivery.

Many transactions less than £100 are covered by the chargeback scheme so the op might still get their money back

drpet49 · 11/08/2023 22:41

FFS I cant believe people are still falling for these scams in this day and age.

Kernsworld · 11/08/2023 22:45

Of course it was a scam. How are people still falling for these and buying them?

Those Facebook ads from unknown brands selling expensive items for a pittance are always a scam.

cyncope · 11/08/2023 22:48

You're obviously not going to get a real shed for £40 from a random company on Facebook though, are you?

Netaporter · 11/08/2023 22:51

@NewNameNigel i was responding to the poster above that suggested she make a s75 claim. If the OP has used a debit card it may be different but if she didn’t there is no point giving her false hope (beyond thinking she could buy an adult sized shed for £40, obvs)
