AIBU to think I've been scammed?

Husband and I have been talking about getting a small shed for the garden. Lo and behold, ads started appearing on my FB feed. There was one for a 6x4 plastic one for £40 including delivery. There were a couple of hundred comments all saying they'd received them and were happy, so I ordered one & paid for it. This was a few weeks ago.

Today I got a delivery. It was a gold coloured chain with a sun on it which opens up and inside it says "you are my sunshine".

I certainly haven't ordered it! Nothing on it to say where its from. Did an image search on it & saw a few results saying "ordered a shed got a necklace".

Please tell me I haven't been really daft/gullible! Have any of you lovely MNers received a £40 shed from FB??

This is very funny. I don’t understand why you would be sent a necklace though? Why wouldn’t they just send nothing at all? Can anyone explain?

love the idea of ‘you are my sunshine!’ from the scammers.

I ordered an expensive pillow and got a random crap belt, followed by half a ripped up notebook. It was only when I started commenting every time I saw the advert that a pillow finally arrived!

Thoughtful2355 · 11/08/2023 23:03

yes scammed, go to the bank. its a pretty usual scam

User63847484848 · 11/08/2023 23:05

Sadly you should never buy anything from a Facebook ad as the likelihood of a scam is so high.
disappointing that Facebook let it happen.

Soapyspuds · 11/08/2023 23:08

A 6x4 shed delivered for £40?

You thought that was genuine?

My brain is actually hurting right now.

Radiodread · 11/08/2023 23:11

This is really odd, as I have also seen lots of scam ads for sheds recently. Also other seasonal products like paddle boards and boats. In winter it is firewood. I think these scammers just fake advertise whatever they think people with money might be buying this month.

hope you get your money back :(

£40 for a shed?

Was it for a child?

If so you could give her the chain.

Right?!

It seems like you’ve been scammed unfortunately. A similar thing happened to my dad when he ordered something off a dodgy seller on eBay a few years back. He ordered a set of ladders and a little trinket worth about 20p turned up. Luckily he paid via PayPal so got a refund.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 11/08/2023 23:21

I'm not feeling much sympathy I'm afraid as thinking you could get a shed for £40 was ridiculous.

Pjmasksonrepeat · 11/08/2023 23:23

I was victim of a similar scam (though not for a shed). Got sent a fake gold ring instead of my item and paypal wouldn't refund as they had proof of shipping. Was also off an advert on facebook.

PriamFarrl · 11/08/2023 23:38

I don’t understand why they send anything at all though.

I've got one of those, my ds bought a load of them because he liked some if the other ones , well he thought his room mates would like the others and they came in a package.

Unless it's through PayPal I wouldn't buy off fb. That's stupidly cheap foe a shed though

ohsuzannah · 12/08/2023 00:55

Someone sent me the link. It was identical to a shed I'd been looking at on Wilko for £600!

Ahh so ypu can't even do it through PayPal then . What happens if you refuse delivery I wonder

Musicthegreatcommunicator · 12/08/2023 07:07

Thanks for all the replies. Thinking about it now, I'm really amazed that I fell for it. When I hear others telling stories of similar scams I've always felt a bit smug that I wouldn't fall for it. They had so many comments saying that they'd received theirs. I clicked on a couple of the names & they seemed to be genuine FB accounts with a couple of hundred friends.

I paid by debit card, so I'm going to contact my bank right now. I'm worried that they now have my card details. I feel such a fool!

So why not send an empty box? They have proof of shipping but that will show the weight which is far too light to be a shed. So why bother sending anything?

Netaporter · 11/08/2023 22:26

@Musicthegreatcommunicator you won’t be able to claim under s75 as the amount is too low even if you paid on a credit card. These scammers aren’t daft ;-)

However thinking you were gonna get a brand new non-Barbie dream house-sized shed for £40 is another matter. Chalk it up to experience.

Is that the same as a chargeback? I recently successfully claimed for non delivery of goods around £30.

It wasn't a scam it was a well known company they just didn't send my item or respond to my emails.

Jifmicroliquid · 12/08/2023 08:17

Did you not think £40 for a shed was a bit, er, strange?

Yes you’ve been scammed.

thetimeisnow · 12/08/2023 08:19

Hi Op, I fell for it, too.
I did do a trust pilot check before, and it was positive. But it may be that the name and logo was very similar.

I don't usually fall for these things, but I was busy and rushed and didn't think about it.
Received a necklace.
They did reply to my emails, and I have asked for a refund, which they say are processing.

JustAnotherUsey · 12/08/2023 08:20

Similar happened to me. Ordered Xmas PJ's which were pretty cheap for whole family. I got a ring delivered instead. Cheap metal thing. Didn't bother trying to get money back as probably no chance of getting a refund!

xyz111 · 12/08/2023 09:12

Never buy anything from "companies" on Facebook! £40 for a shed was never going to materialise.

Netaporter · 12/08/2023 09:23

@PurpleGreenandWhiteAreTheNewPrimaryColours no. S75 claims are for Credit Cards not debit cards. The amount must be between £100 and £30,000. You don’t have to have put the whole sum on the cc, a part payment for something protects the whole cost of the goods/service but it must be a minimum of £100 paid.

Charge backs relate to bank Debit Cards.

Soapyspuds · 12/08/2023 14:29

I do not know the details of the scam but at a guess given that there is no formal invoice, the seller will claim that the transaction was for whatever little trinket that they posted.

thetimeisnow · 16/08/2023 08:37

An update on my 'shed'

I have had a complete refund.

Lesson learnt!
