To ask the neighbours to stop doing this?

Newish neighbours I've never spoken to except for a quick hello have started hanging their washing over our shared fence. It's bothering me - Do I say anything? My habitual pettiness is telling me to chuck the lot back over their side though I recognise that would be harsh.

To ask the neighbours to stop doing this?

Yeah, next time flick a little bit of muck at it. Fair warning has been given. She'll figure it out.

OhYetAnotherBrickInTheWall · 11/08/2023 17:49

I would be sent demented by this. My garden is designed (by this I mean, by me… I’ve planted so it’s pretty or dramatic of whatever from various angles). Someone’s washing interrupting my view would send me bat shit.

Well done for saying something. Good luck with next visit and hope you get it sorted. I’d be pushing it over the side (so I couldn’t see it, rather than chucking it on the ground) every single time.

Cantrushart · 11/08/2023 17:51

Fresh paint, creosote, mud on your side?

What did you actually say to her? Could you maybe write a note that she could then get translated?

Or use Google translate and do it in real time ?

I have no idea what language she speaks.

It wouldn’t bother me at all.

Out of interest, why not? Would you be happy to sit in your garden looking at it?

OP invite someone round who smokes 😉

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 11/08/2023 17:54

It would be good to speak to the partner of the neighbour.

I think pushing the washing back over the other side could be seen as an aggressive move..

Some one said offer to help them put up a line but how do you hang your washing. Perhaps you could print out a Garden line rotary thing from Argos or somewhere with the pictures and details and hand it to them... at least it would be better for them than hanging it on your wall.

I'd also look at fast growing plants.

Dreamlight · 11/08/2023 17:55

We've had a neighbour's mum do this when she was visiting from home (Ghana I think) totally normal to do it over there. My neighbour tried to get her mum to use their washing line, but mum was having none of it!

One of our other neighbors hangs all the washing over the railings in the back garden, I have no idea how it dries, but it works for them!

Enforceddrysummer · 11/08/2023 17:56

Pick up the washing and fold it. Take it round with a photo of a washing line or airer. Repeat until she gets the message.

My neighbours did this once…. I pushed it back over and told them my son pulled it down so chucked it back over— they didn’t do it again 🙂

Genius.

ladeluge · 11/08/2023 17:59

I think it would irritate me too! Anyway I'd do as others suggest, i.e. talk to English speaking partner, or use translate app.

If they ignore it and continue I would put my oldest sheets and towels all along the fence for days on end.

BMW6 · 11/08/2023 18:00

My NDN used to do the same. She has a washing line but only 2 pegs.

I asked her to stop as I have tomatoes growing up my side and her washing was covering them!

She smiled and nodded then she did it again so I pushed it off.

Then she did it AGAIN but I could hear her in the garden (6 ft fence) so I quite angrily said "please stop draping your washing on my fence!" She removed it, said Sorry, and hasn't done it since.

Shove it off OP.

I have no idea what language she speaks.

Use the "detect language" feature on the app.

I guess I'm weird.

Maze76 · 11/08/2023 18:04

Speak to the husband - could be culturally this is the norm where they are from.. however if it continues after- push it off

HundredMilesAnHour · 11/08/2023 18:06

This would annoy me too. I'd probably 'casually' push off one or two of things as if the wind did it and then speak to the husband when he gets home.

thatsn0tmyname · 11/08/2023 18:07

Who on earth puts clean washing on a dirty fence? I would start by asking them both to. If that doesn't work, flick poo like marks on their washing.

Where is it the cultural norm to hang your washing on your neighbour’s fence?

Waffle78 · 11/08/2023 18:09

You can clearly see a washing line with washing on. 🤣🤣🤣

Lifeomars · 11/08/2023 18:09

Mine do that, they are Roma and live very differently from me and in fact from the rest of the people on my street. I took their washing down from my fence plus the mops that they had put up there to dry and used Google Translate to explain that they needed to stop doing this. I then had my 4ft fence removed and a 6ft fence put up as the sight of their back yard full of scrap and rubbish was really impacting on me. They still put drape their washing all over their fence but that is their business. I used to be very tempted to chuck their washing on the ground but resisted the urge.

Roma people seem to do it

Maze76 · 11/08/2023 18:10

It happens, I have a relative who has been known to do this, because that how it’s done ‘back home’.

ChrisPPancake · 11/08/2023 18:11

Are you planning a bonfire anytime soon?

Anamechangeisnotjustforchristmas · 11/08/2023 18:11

Paint your side of the wall and don’t tell them 😂

HelloChompy · 11/08/2023 18:13

I'll lend you one of my dogs OP. He would turn that into an amazing game of tug of war!!

DustyLee123 · 11/08/2023 18:13

Flick it back over. I wouldn’t have that.
