To ask the neighbours to stop doing this?

Newish neighbours I've never spoken to except for a quick hello have started hanging their washing over our shared fence. It's bothering me - Do I say anything? My habitual pettiness is telling me to chuck the lot back over their side though I recognise that would be harsh.

To ask the neighbours to stop doing this?

I’d offer to help them put up a washing line.

RomeoMcFlourish · 11/08/2023 17:24

I would ask them to stop. Then if they don’t, push it back over. Every single time. They’ll eventually stop when their clean washing ends up getting dirty on the ground again.

PatTesting · 11/08/2023 17:24

That would really annoy me. Whose fence is it?

Doesn’t the damp washing pick up dirt from the fence?

Diddykong · 11/08/2023 17:24

I would say can they move it because you're worried your cat will walk along the wall and scratch/claw it and you'd hate for their things to be ruined. Don't have a cat? That's perfect, itll leave them confused for a good 5 years, always waiting to see the cat.

Hopeful16 · 11/08/2023 17:25

Are they crazy? That's not going to keep clean washing clean! 🙈
Maybe advise them that 'last time' you did that the wood stained your washing and hopefully the tip will prevent the same happening to theirs.

MissHoollie · 11/08/2023 17:26

That would annoy me too but for the sake of neighbourly relations I wouldnt say anything

GalileoHumpkins · 11/08/2023 17:26

The fact it's there wouldn't bother me but who the duck hangs their clean stuff over a dirty fence to dry? That's just madness.

ibetonlosingdogs · 11/08/2023 17:26

Eww. Why hang clean washing on a wall? Bizarre.

I would just ask nicely (even though it would infuriate me) as they are your neighbours and last thing anyone needs is to live next door to people they can’t tolerate.

rwalker · 11/08/2023 17:28

Just smear some mud on your

Furtivefig · 11/08/2023 17:29

I can’t get over the audacity 😄 And I’m amazed you haven’t said anything yet!

madeinmanc · 11/08/2023 17:30

There's nowt so queer as folk! 🤭

drpet49 · 11/08/2023 17:31

I wouldn’t like that and would say something.

Hellsbellsandspidersankles · 11/08/2023 17:32

That would really bloody annoy me.

BlartFast · 11/08/2023 17:32

Ew. Skanky.

That would annoy me so much. I’d have to ask them to stop.

Mrstwiddle · 11/08/2023 17:32

Do they think it's their fence?! Still unbelievable if so but that's the only thing I can think of

Callingpale · 11/08/2023 17:32

Bit the bullet and knocked on the door 10 minutes ago. The lady's English wasn't great but she nodded and smiled. Washing still there...

It wouldn’t bother me at all.

What did you actually say to her? Could you maybe write a note that she could then get translated?

CountryStore · 11/08/2023 17:36

Maybe they've not had chance to put a washing line up yet if they've just moved in?

You can see the washing line in the photo. It looks messy and I couldn't bear it.

I just asked that she remove the washing from our fence a few times. She just nodded. I think her husband will be back from work soon so I'll ask him who I think speaks better English.

Yep get that but I don't think this is a reasonable solution and is actually quite rude.

My neighbours do it with duvets and rugs, every couple of months, looks dead scruffy but I have more of a problem with the toys, old toothbrushes, and general crap their kids throw over.

They have a washing line, as you can see in the picture. This looks to be overflow!

I can't understand washing clothes to then put them on a dirty fence. People are so strange.

Danikm151 · 11/08/2023 17:46

My neighbours did this once…. I pushed it back over and told them my son pulled it down so chucked it back over— they didn’t do it again 🙂
