AIBU to think these Police officers should be disciplined for arresting this autistic

girl for a ‘hate crime’ then dragging her out of her home kicking and screaming?

The police officer who the girl said looked like her ‘lesbian nana’ seems very unprofessional.

Teen girl with autism arrested for telling officer she 'looks like my lesbian nana'

West Yorkshire Police's professional standards panel is investigating video footage of the incident involving an autistic 16-year-old girl following a complaint by her mother.

As the parent of an autistic teenager I can say that video is horrific and extremely worrying

As a parent of any teenager, as a parent, as a child, as member of society this is horrific. What happens when even the law abiding stop trusting the police?

JaneJeffer · 10/08/2023 23:04

That is disgusting. The police woman is so full of aggression.

FadeAwayAndRadiate · 10/08/2023 23:07

Absolutely horrific indeed. Sadly I am not shocked. This seems like fairly typical behaviour for some police. (Particularly male ones.) I believe some men who are bullies, and bigoted, and sexist, and who hate women, join the police because they love the power and control it gives them, and the opportunities to USE that power and control.

Not all police. But SOME.

FadeAwayAndRadiate · 10/08/2023 23:08

And yes, some female police are as bad. The male police are worse though.

Awrite · 10/08/2023 23:08

The Fair Cop people tweeted that it cannot be a public order offense as both parties were in a private dwelling.

Also that even if it were in public it doesn't meet the threshold of an offense.

It certainly is a distressing watch. Such an abuse of power. For shame.

Augustisthesundayofsummer · 10/08/2023 23:09

What does the police statement say?

Isittimeformynapyet · 10/08/2023 23:11

BiscuitsandPuffin · 10/08/2023 22:28

Think they should spend more time investigating burglaries and catching actual criminals causing problems with the social fabric and less time on this sort of thing.
All 7 of them should be answering some bloody hard questions about this and potentially be sacked.
It's always women they use disproportionate force on and try to intimidate.

"It's always women they use disproportionate force on and try to intimidate."

Well it's not, is it. There's been plenty of footage of black men being brutalised for no good reason.

This shouldn't happen to any citizen, but this is a really upsetting example

lifeturnsonadime · 10/08/2023 23:11

Crikey, it's not clear what led to the police involvement BUT I can't imagine a teenage girl had done anything that had warranted 7 officers hounding her to her house and manhandling her from under the stairs AFTER her mother had explained the context of the so called 'homophobic' remark and the fact she is autistic.

Disgusting. Those officers should be disciplined and rather than wearing rainbow flags they should get disability training. This is what happens when all of the efforts go into woke virtue signalling, real needs get lost and vulnerable people are put at risk. Horrific.

We have only one side of the story. The officers and the police will not comment on an ongoing investigation.

The force have released a statement actually

lifeturnsonadime · 10/08/2023 23:13

And as the mother of 2 autistic teenagers that child under those stairs was in distress.

That's understandable

The police have made a full statement about the circumstances but tbh I still can not see a crime was committed and definitely the reaction was well out of proportion and they were wrong to not try and calm the situation rather than escalate it .

The video is so traumatic to watch. That poor girl. Don't they get training in de-escalating situations

The statement is pretty awful as statements go. West Yorkshire Police should be ashamed of themselves. I hear that the police have contacted social services.

Augustisthesundayofsummer · 10/08/2023 23:19

Can someone link the polices statement please?

cittigirl · 10/08/2023 23:20

I had to call the police once to try and de escalate my DD who is autistic. Thankfully their approach was kind and gentle and their presence did help. Watching this video is horrific 😭

leopard22 · 10/08/2023 23:22

I'd be interested to see the full body worn video from the officers

SkinnyMalinkyLankyLegs · 10/08/2023 23:22

Hawkins009 · 10/08/2023 22:46

Do we have the full story of what happened or just media headlines ?

I don't think so, just the video that a family member took without any background ie why 7 police officers had to be called out (probably because there were quite a few family members in the house, so for the police's protection). Also I don't believe we heard the teenager make a simple observation about the police officer looking like a lesbian, it could've been said in any way/tone. Not taking either side here, but we only have a snippet of what went on here.

SoShallINever · 10/08/2023 23:25

The Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police has commented on the case and said we are only seeing one side of the story. I am not anti Police (I have close family serving in the Police) but I fail to see how Oz Khan can begin to defend this. He would do far better to admit that his officers acted inappropriately and pledge to fully investigate.
I felt sick when the girls mother explained that she had autism and the female officer said "I don't care". That says it all.
Our Police are so much better than this and these idiots have disgraced UK policing on a world wide platform.

I would assume that there were 7 officers for their own protection. There seemed to be quite a few people in the house, i would think that due to it being a heightened situation, they wouldn't want their officers at risk.

Even if she'd said the police officer looked like a lesbian in an angry or sarcastic tone that response was NOT warranted given her clear level of distress. Nor were 7 fucking officers to the house.

This is vile.

There is no way this reaction (and by that I mean 7 officers and manhandling) is warranted in a person's home unless the initial crime was serious, and there is no indication that this was the case.

Tighginn · 10/08/2023 23:27

The police are just getting worse. That female officer at the end, what a disgrace standing and watching that like a spoilt child rather than a professional.

lifeturnsonadime · 10/08/2023 23:27

I would assume that there were 7 officers for their own protection.

Against what?

A frightened autistic teenage under the stairs who may have made a homophobic comment.

As I said, due to the fact that there seemed to be a number of people in the house, extra officers would have been called as back up. 2 officers in a house where there are quite a few family members and a heightened situated isn't ideal. It seemed like they had been trying to deal with the situation for a good while and they just weren't getting anywhere.

lifeturnsonadime · 10/08/2023 23:29

Exactly it does say it all.

Inexcusable.

As I said, against numerous family members (there did seem to be a few people in the house) in what was a heightened situation. Things could easily have gotten violent.

What heightened situation?

The child was crying under the stairs.

The police was aggressive.

The only heightened situation was caused by the aggressive and unwarranted police response?
