To give the son a gift?

Hi all,
I am a cleaner and have cleaned weekly for a family for 10 months now. It is their son's 10th birthday on Monday, he is a real sweetie and always talks to me during my visits. He is very passionate about Minecraft and Pokémon, something that I loved when I was younger, so he is always talking to me about that and wanting to show me his Pokémon cards. (I do of course stop my cleaning clock when he's talking to me haha!)
I would love to give him a gift for his birthday next week and drop it round, would this be inappropriate? I was thinking something Pokémon related as he is so passionate about it, maybe an in-game purchase for him that he can redeem.
If you were the client would you think this was odd of your cleaner to want to do this?

No, I think it would be lovely.

That's so weird, I didn't tap on 'quote'. I hate it when people quote OP's, it's so unnecessary.

UpaladderwatchingTV · 10/08/2023 21:57

I think that's a lovely idea OP, and I can't see any reason why his parents should object, in their shoes I'd be really pleased that you cared enough to bother.

When I was growing up, we had a lovely lady who came and cleaned and she always gave me a birthday gift. I had a bonus grandparent!

Cleaner here.. All of my customers get a small gift for birthdays..

Pjmasksonrepeat · 10/08/2023 22:07

Sounds lovely x

TappingTed · 10/08/2023 22:08

Awww you’re lovely @Dearly89 that would be so kind.

Cloudsandrainnotsunandsand · 10/08/2023 22:11

My newest customers( are 2 years in) both told me clearly I would never be treated like 'staff'.. True to their word in every way. They deserve cards & gifts at every turn! The lady turned 90 last week!

Monkeymonkeymoo · 10/08/2023 22:27

I think that’s lovely, I probably wouldn’t go for an in game purchase though (unless you know his parents let him have them).
A pack of Pokémon cards or stickers with a bag of sweets/bar of chocolate might be better (not so big/expensive that the parents feel guilty or awkward but a nice token that he’ll appreciate).
I’ve done childcare and cleaning jobs in the past and I always gave the children something small but thoughtful for their birthday and Christmas. The parents have never thought it was inappropriate.

PictureConsequences · 10/08/2023 22:44

That's really sweet of you, do it.

murasaki · 10/08/2023 23:04

I agree, a lovely idea. I swap Xmas gifts with my cleaner and always include something for her kids, not sure when the birthdays are, which I should do given I countersigned one's passport....but it's a nice touch, do it.

ImGoingThroughChanges · 10/08/2023 23:06

Aw we had a lovely cleaner years ago who brought my child a toy duck one day. I was really touched. Go for it.

Oysterbabe · 10/08/2023 23:10

Not weird at all, it would be a nice thing to do. My cleaner always buys something for my kids at Christmas.
