To think an autistic child should not be treated like this by the police?

Immoralplant · 10/08/2023 08:10

I don’t know the background to this video, but at no point is there any suggestion by the police that this autistic teenager has done anything other than say words the police didn’t like.

I am absolutely shocked that this is happening in Britain.

IABU - that’s an appropriate police response to homophobic words
IANBU - those police officers should be sacked

Warning: the video shows scenes of an autistic teenager being hurt.

Whatever that girl "said" fhe actions of those police against a young age girl are far far worse.

Phos · 10/08/2023 09:18

I think this video is only showing part of the story, the part that suits their agenda. I don’t think police would waste resource like that over anything trivial.

I think you're the type of person to claim "What was she wearing, what was she doing outside" when Sarah Everhard was raped and murdered by a serving police officer who as it turned out was already a perv that had committed several sex crimes already. Funnily enough, the police didn't do anything about those either, despite his nickname being "The Rapist"!

ReformedWaywardTeen · 10/08/2023 17:55

I'd love to say I'm shocked but at this point no, I'm not.

I've experienced the worst of police myself this year and posted about it here and their aggression and attempt to try and justify nasty unprofessional behaviour too.

So what if she said the word lesbian? My DD is a lesbian, she would not have reacted like that or seen it as a hate crime.

The officer who led that behaviour looks like a bully with anger issues. How many times has her personal issues around her sexuality led to her kicking off like that? And imagine if there was no camera on her?

14 officers apparently turned up for that.

We have some of the lowest conviction rates going and they are wasting time bullying a child with additional needs for an observation.

I hope at the least the officer is sacked, she is nothing more than a thug in uniform who has no intention of de-escalating a situation. In fact she caused the situation.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 10/08/2023 18:01

@Phos you're wrong, they would indeed waste time on this

My DH had a row with a man who has made our collective lives miserable for over three years. He finally had enough after he screamed abuse at our 14 year old who has additional needs and phoned him. Once, literally once and whilst he called him some choice names considering what others may have done it was nothing.

What followed was two weeks of abuse and harrassment by local police, accusing my DH of using homophobic slurs (he didn't) and of making multiple calls on multiple phone numbers (utter rot, and they had not so much as looked at who the numbers belonged to).

We had them turn up at our home twice, shouting abuse, threatening arrest, you name it. They had nothing, no evidence, no witnesses, not one thing. They even allowed him time to delete CCTV that proved his abuse towards our DS.

So do I think they would waste resources like this? Damn right I do.

inloveonholiday · 10/08/2023 16:19

I am so upset reading about this. The girl was factual at all times. At no point was it a slur.

If my autistic daughter had made a factual comment and been dragged out because it was misinterpreted she would probably not recover from the mental distress.

She would have trauma probably for the rest of her life and a deep mistrust of police.

Disgusting when autistic young people need supporting and because they are vulnerable they need to know they can ask for help.

It's likely that after this even paramedicsi in uniform will trigger a trauma response after this.

The damage done is significant. Bloody uneducated, misguided people with authority.

I am appalled but sadly not surprised.

I completely agree with you. And that trauma would colour lots of their other social interactions and their sense of safety at home. The implications are so huge. I can't get over the 20 hours in the station either. It's pure 'process as punishment'. Way beyond what policing by consent is supposed to be.

Actions have consequences. Maybe she’ll learn to not be so rude in future. If this lesson had been taught earlier it needn’t have got to this point.

It's to say someone looks like a relative is it? I do hope you watch all your speech at all times even inside your own home. You never know if someone somewhere takes offence you may end up on the receiving end of an arrest like this. Obviously, you'll completely and utterly deserve it, and will hopefully learn a lesson to not be rude in future. because If this lesson had been taught earlier it needn’t have got to this point.

Have they never heard the phrase, "when you're in a hole; stop digging".

I hope the mum has good legal advice and they wipe the floor with WYP. Absolute bastards.

@miniaturepixieonacid trapping an autistic girl in the middle of a meltdown in a cupboard is absolutely the wrong thing to do. The second she gets a chance she flees to the safety of her mum to get away from the man blocking her exit. As for bending her arm when she has scoliosis there are no words.
She was released without charge AFAIK.

I don't think I've ever seen more inappropriate treatment of someone who is ND. The police demonstrated a shocking lack of awareness of how to handle a vulnerable young person and they have utterly failed someone to whom they have a duty of care.

That force appears to be in urgent need of some autism awareness training.

neverbeenskiing · 10/08/2023 18:28

I don’t think police would waste resource like that over anything trivial.

Ha! Having witnessed three police cars containing six officers turn up to arrest a 15 year old boy with SEND on suspicion of a non-violent offence I have to disagree with you. Nothing whatever to do with the boy in question being black of course, and neither was their unnecessarily rough man-handling of him and shouting in his face throughout the process.

Incidentally, when another family I worked with reported that their child had been the victim of a serious sexual offence the same Police force took several months to even interview the perpetrator.

There's no question that our public services are under-resourced, but it's also a question of priorities and it seems there's always money for bigotry.

I am sure that SS will be delighted to provide the child with all the supports etc that the mother may not have been able to access.

Soubriquet · 10/08/2023 18:32

I posted this on feminism chat but I’ll repost it here

We had an incident this week in the town centre where a man was mown down by a mobility scooter. Not the normal types but the ones that look like miniature cars but can still go where pedestrians go.

4 police cars and two ambulances showed up.

Someone had their house broken into not too long ago, and was then verbally harassed. No police because they didn’t have any spare staff

LakieLady · 10/08/2023 18:39

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/08/2023 11:35

They need the same kind of training they get for LGBTetc issues.

Absolutely this.

They need to understand that ND people can't always communicate in the same way that us neurotypicals do, and to make adjustments in how they are dealt with as a result.

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 10/08/2023 18:41

Whatever has gone on off camera I suspect there was significantly less danger to the public than the dozens of men riding round Middleton Park on motorbikes at 60mph that West Yorkshire police consistently fail to turn up and deal with.

Kweeky · 10/08/2023 18:44

sst Chf Con Khan said police were called at about 12.12am on Monday (August 7), to Leeds city centre after the force received calls from a family member of a 16-year-old girl "who was reportedly intoxicated and putting herself at risk".
He added: “Officers attended at about 1am and drove the teenager to her home so she could be appropriately looked after.

“Upon returning her to the address, comments were made which resulted in the girl being arrested on suspicion of a homophobic public order offence. The nature of the comments made was fully captured on body-worn video.

“When the girl was eventually fit to be interviewed, that interview took place with an appropriate adult. She was later released on bail pending further enquiries and advice from the Crown Prosecution Service.

@miniaturepixieonacid ive said it on the other thread.

Six police officers arrested me for allegedly posting “don’t they just” on an instagram story which said “good things take time”. I don’t even have an instagram account. They knew this.

I’m a fat middle aged woman. Six of them turned up.

When my neighbour was burgled, guess how many turned up. Go on. Guess.

They are bullies and I have no respect for them.

WTAF - @WILTYjim what on Earth happened?!

WeetabixTowels · 10/08/2023 18:56

MrTiddlesTheCat · 10/08/2023 16:28

Quite right, because everyone knows you can cure autism by terrorising it out of them. FFS!

Indeed, even better - just slap it out of them like they did in the good old days Hmm

Oh look, someone else who doesn't have a clue about neurodivergence and how it affects people.

There are clearly more of them about than I realised. Maybe the NAS should start a consciousness raising campaign.

Fuck me. If SS did a full investigation every time an ND kid did something aggressive, they'd need to multiply staff numbers by at least ten.

I recently dealt with someone with a very autistic child who is aggressive every day, including towards his younger siblings, but SS won't get involved. If the West Yorkshire SS spend more than minimal time investigating a verbally aggressive teenager, someone needs to ask why that is a good use of their resources.

LakieLady · 10/08/2023 19:04

neverbeenskiing · 10/08/2023 14:04

No, she's not going to "learn" to be NT so bore off with your goady ablesist bullshit.

Yes, it's like me expecting my stepson to "learn" how not to be T1 diabetic.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 10/08/2023 19:06

Funnily enough I've just been talking to DD about this case, they're a lesbian and ND too.

Their exact words were "yet when a lad at school told DS I should be launched off the building or that he has this brother should rape me straight, for being gay, the police did fuck all but tell me to be resilient and that it was "just words" which I should ignore".

And yes, that did indeed happen. School did more than the police. In fact, the head couldn't believe the police had said that and had fully backed us reporting the threats made to police as there was only so much they could in school. The school ended up contacting SS themselves.

Great decision making choice to keep the word "homophobic" when dealing with a 16 year old with a disability
