for putting a bit of lego in his mouth - and yesturday he smacked him for pooing on the floor (he missed the potty). I don't see what the big deal is regarding pooing on the floor - i mean he is only 2 and clearly not ready.

I really don't agree with smacking children, I don't think it achieves anything at all. DH and I have completely different ideas about bringing up our DC's.

I am feeling really pissed off right now. I'm typing this quickly whilst he puts him to bed. AIBU to be so annoyed?

Well, I am against any form of smacking, but I think this thread involves not just a parent who believe in smacking as punishment, but also a parent who has little understanding of his child. He smacked him for putting lego in his mouth. That is hardly being naughty? I think it is something very very disturbing about people who think its okey to smack a baby/toddler. Just the other day I saw a woman smacking a baby who can't have been more than 10 months. What is going ooooon?

i misunderstood QC's point about taking responsibility-i looked at it from a 'the op has no control over her husbands actions' viewpoint-but when i thought about it i realised she meant responsibility for protecting the child.

AbbeyA · 28/02/2008 13:10

I puzzled over your comment Divastrop-thanks for explaining.
People tend to revert to the way that they have been brought up unless someone makes them really think about it.The OP might be able to have a calm reasoned discussion if she picks a time when they are both not tired and stressed.

"It didn't do me any harm!"

Yes, it did. It left him thinking that it's ok to smack a 2 year old for being a 2 year old.

AbbeyA · 28/02/2008 13:23

What a fantastic line colditz! I shall use that if I have any arguments with people in the future!

No YANBU . I have on occasions tapped as opposed to full walloped dd 2.1, but never for things like your DH.
Putting lego in his mouth is quite normal, although should be discouraged at this age.
Pooing on the floor because he missed the potty is an accident and as you say he may not be ready to potty train. DH obviously does not understand ds being deliberately naughty as opposed to being his age.
Smacking a child during potty training, for any accidents may make him nervous and afraid to try and will compound the problem.

Having now caught up with the whole thread, I think some people are very black and white regarding smacking. However, it is anything but. My DH and I agree never to smack in temper, always having given at least 2 warnings.

  1. Stop doing that because of xyz
  2. This is your last warning, stop doing that because of xyz.
  3. I will count to 5 and then this will happen if you carry on- either sitting in hallway or smacked hands depending on the situation.
  4. If the behaviour then continues then the punishment is carried out.

This ensures that the behaviour is dealt with fairly, that dd is never hit through anger and that any punishment fits the crime so to speak and dd has made the decision to carry on with the behaviour, understanding what will happen if it continues.

YANBU - what would worry me is, if he smacks for this, what will he do if your DS is displaying typical naughty/stubborn/annoying toddler behaviour later?
