To think we will be ok in mid thirties heat without aircon?

Travelling with husband and 18 month old for four nights to see family.

Accommodation option 1 is a 2 bed flat, has a terrace and fans.
Accommodation option 2 is a hotel, perfectly nice and has a pool and air con.

We are disagreeing which is best. Terrace would mean once toddler is in bed we can sit out and have wine, and she could have her own room, hotel room means once toddler is asleep we are committed to spending the evening quietly in the room sat on the bed.
However, in the hotel room we will be nice and cool and the pool and air con will mean we can get respite from the heat. Price point and location the same.

YANBU- apartment
YABU- hotel room

Air con.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 07/08/2023 08:02

Depends if it's hot and dry or if it's hot and humid. If it's humid then Aircon. Otherwise I'd be fine with fans.

sashh · 07/08/2023 08:05

I would need the aircon, I need it here.

I think you need to know the actual set up of the place with fans. If it has one of those solid marble looking floors that will help.

IF there is shade that will also make a difference. This is why old buildings in places like Spain have narrow roads so the road is in shade most of the day.

If you do go for fans then early morning open the windows and point the fans towards them - you blow the hot air out.

Once it has cooled down a bit close the windows and blinds / shutters to keep the cool air in.

Toddler might not sleep in mid thirties heat with just a fan! That will be uncomfortable.

Caspianberg · 07/08/2023 08:06

We live where its 30 most the summer. We have no air con, and neither do most people we know. We recently stayed at local hotel and they don’t have air con either for environmental reasons and it’s fine. Decent thick walls, and curtains closes daytime or awnings, and we cope. Our heating bills alone for snowy winters are €€ so most people couldn’t afford air con as well. We have a toddler also.

But I would probably go hotel in your scenario. Just for the pool so you have entertainment daily for toddler.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/08/2023 08:08

I'd go for the apartment. We live on the balcony on holiday, so I'd find sitting quietly in a hotel room in the evening utterly miserable.

Are there public pools/the sea you can swim in?

But the other option of going out for walks in the evening with DC asleep in a pushchair also sounds OK, if it's in the sort of place where that's a nice thing to do, ie there's somewhere to walk to, restaurants, promenade etc. How much time do you anticipate spending with family while you're there?

BarbaraofSeville · 07/08/2023 08:10

That's a good point on the air con @Caspianberg due to cost and environmental concerns a few countries won't cool below about 28 C so the air con might not make that much of a difference.

Cocopogo · 07/08/2023 08:12

Does the hotel not have a balcony to sit and drink wine on?
Usually would go for apartment but def air con

Trixiefirecracker · 07/08/2023 08:13

Children don’t tolerate heat well. You will need air con!

Aposterhasnoname · 07/08/2023 08:15

Are there no rooms in the hotel with a balcony.?

bryceQ · 07/08/2023 08:20

No I would choose the air con especially with a little one. You can take the pram and they can sleep in that if you want to sit and have a drink

BabyHaribo · 07/08/2023 08:22

Definitely air con. Especially with a dc that young they don't always tolerate the heat well.

Pool will also be good to cool down in and most dc love swimming

MrsToothyBitch · 07/08/2023 08:32

I'd hold out for an apartment with aircon! My parents have a fairly cool apartment abroad and are always looking to make it cooler.

The apartment sounds a nicer space - I'd prefer it as a space- but I'd honestly prioritise the aircon. So hunt again or take the hotel room. We both feel the heat so need the aircon and I get bitten to bits so need the aircon for the sealed chamber of a room I have to sleep in, regardless of where I stay.

inkworks273 · 07/08/2023 08:45

Air con for sure!

thespy · 07/08/2023 08:49

I think you will get absolutely no sleep in that apartment - go for the hotel and put your headphones in and watch Netflix or if you are brave just take toddler out with you in the evening like the locals!

feathers7 · 07/08/2023 09:03

Currently in mid 30s heat. So thankful for aircon at night!
We've said we couldn't imagine not having it.

UsingChangeofName · 07/08/2023 09:13

The pool would swing it for me.
At first I thought you were maybe wondering if you'd 'cope' with just fans, in order to be close to family, but if you are choosing between the two, the benefit of having the pool for the length of your break would be the deciding factor for me.

Careerdilemma · 07/08/2023 09:16

Depends how humid it is and e.g. if there is a sea breeze. Mid 30s can feel very different depending on those factors.

drivinmecrazy · 07/08/2023 09:26

Going to go against the grain here but if it's a choice between the two I'd go for the balcony.
Windows, shutters, curtains kept closed all day.
Kids do and can manage perfectly.
While my mum was building her house in Spain she lived in an old Finca. Happily spent the summer months when our DC were tiny.
In fact we remember it very fondly.
No pool? We had an oversized washing bucket they splashed around in. Ventilation? Luckily there was a gaping hole in the roof of their bedroom , they loved being able to see the stars at night 😂
They're still here to tell the tale.
When mums house was finished completed with pool and air conditioning they missed their sky light.
For my own sanity I'd take the balcony for chilled evenings and wine any day

HalloumiLuvver · 07/08/2023 10:25

Air con!

How miserable would it be if none of you can sleep well in the heat and are over tired everyday? That's a recipe for disaster with a toddler.

Yes, I was told heat to 18 in winter (with the aircon, costs more than central heating and houses in hot countries may be uninsulated so a waste to go higher), cool to 26 in summer. I didn't have aircon myself, we just closed blinds and then opened windows in the evening.

Piggywaspushed · 07/08/2023 17:53

Tghe 26 degree rules is in public spaces. Hotel bedrooms are exempt.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 07/08/2023 17:58

We made the mistake of booing an apartment in Spain with no aircon in July about 10 years ago. It was hellish. Aircon all the way. Can't you just bundle your toddler up in a buggy and let her sleep there while you stay out a bit later? That's what we used to do.

GoldDuster · 07/08/2023 18:01

Hotel with pool and aircon, absolutely.

If there are mozzies and no screens, and you've got to keep all the doors and windows closed evenings and overnight that will be a shocker with just a fan blowing warm air around. If it's too hot to sleep you'll all be exhausted and fractious during the day, I'd go the hotel every time for such a short trip with no time to acclimatise.

Annachristie · 07/08/2023 18:03

Definitely air con. Your baby might find it hard to sleep if it's too hot, and none of you will be relaxed.
