To think we will be ok in mid thirties heat without aircon?

Travelling with husband and 18 month old for four nights to see family.

Accommodation option 1 is a 2 bed flat, has a terrace and fans.
Accommodation option 2 is a hotel, perfectly nice and has a pool and air con.

We are disagreeing which is best. Terrace would mean once toddler is in bed we can sit out and have wine, and she could have her own room, hotel room means once toddler is asleep we are committed to spending the evening quietly in the room sat on the bed.
However, in the hotel room we will be nice and cool and the pool and air con will mean we can get respite from the heat. Price point and location the same.

YANBU- apartment
YABU- hotel room

Are they the only two options?

Can't you get an apartment with air con?

Yes unfortunately- not anything else available.

I lived in those temperatures without air con for several years. It was fine but it took time to acclimatise properly, and you don't have that much time on holiday. In your situation, I would definitely choose the air con.

Just relax the routine a bit while you're away so that you're not stuck in the hotel room all night.

AvengedQuince · 07/08/2023 07:39

As long as there is good through air flow I'd go for apartment. I absolutely hate sitting inside with doors and windows closed in air con and this would be a last resort if it hit 40 degrees. Also, nighttime temperatures are more important if that is when you are going to be trying to sleep, so depends if these are likely to drop off with windows and doors open in the evening or stay high.

Ginmonkeyagain · 07/08/2023 07:40

Yeah for us our hotel room was somehwere to sleep, wash and dump our stuff. With a young child and staying in during the evening it would have been less manageable.

Missey85 · 07/08/2023 07:40

If there the same price go with the air con your toddler will sleep much better than just a fan

Piggywaspushed · 07/08/2023 07:40

Brintons · 07/08/2023 07:28

Air con. I like to keep the windows closed to keep the bugs out.

This is also a good point. In my foolhardy youth , I stayed in a hotel in Corfu , in a ground floor apartment with no aircon.

Suitably oiled with alcohol , I managed to get to sleep with balcony doors open, but I was covered in huge mosquito bites. The doors got firmly closed the night we were woken by the shrieks of a wild animal of some form prowling close by....

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 07/08/2023 07:41

You’ll be fine . We went to Tenerife in similar temps and only had fans. The air circulation makes a massive difference

WeirdBarbie · 07/08/2023 07:42

Do you/your DP run hot or cold normally?

I’m always too hot (literally never have heating on until it’s below freezing) so I’d have an absolutely dreadful time in that heat with no aircon. And I’m a drama Queen so I’d also probably ruin it for everyone else too 🤣 If either of you are like me (and an 18 month old probably is a bit like me) I’d go aircon.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/08/2023 07:42

Hotel with aircon in those temps.

welshweasel · 07/08/2023 07:43

I'd go for the hotel. Pool will provide entertainment, keep the toddler up a bit later than usual then let them sleep in the buggy. We used to do usual bedtime routine, into pyjamas then in buggy with snooze shade and walk them around until they fell asleep, then we'd go for dinner/drinks and transfer to travel cot when we got in.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 07/08/2023 07:43

Can you not find a hotel room with a balcony?

BellaJuno · 07/08/2023 07:44

Air con wins for me every time

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 07/08/2023 07:44

Depends where you’re going. If it’s going to be 30C at night with minimal wind, then the hotel. If the temperature is going to drop after it gets dark and it’s breezy then the apartment every time.

Huromjuicemaker · 07/08/2023 07:45

Daytime temperatures here are about 33-36C at the moment, our block had a power cut on Saturday night. It was very unpleasant without AC and we are used to the heat

Rumplestrumpet · 07/08/2023 07:45

I live in that climate and would not forsake my Aircon. I don't like it very col but honestly even putting bugs aside (which can be awful even with mosquito netting) you find kids really sleep so much better with AC. And no pool with that heat during the day?!? What do you plan to do all day?

I would think you'd be mad to chose the apartment

FromEden · 07/08/2023 07:49

I live somewhere where summer temps are at least 30s and up into the mid 40s. We couldn't survive without air conditioning once temperatures hit the high 20s. Just a fan isn't enough to sleep. Get the a/c.

AMuser · 07/08/2023 07:49

Air con 100%

Dollmeup · 07/08/2023 07:49

Hotel for sure. I have stayed in similar heat without air con in my younger days and it was fine, but now I have kids I think they would struggle to sleep which would mean no sitting out after bedtime anyway.

backatschool · 07/08/2023 07:52

I live in Singapore. It's 28-35 degrees here every day of the year. Aircon every time!

Maddy70 · 07/08/2023 07:52

I'm iny flat in Spain. It's over 30 every day and I have not used my Aircon for weeks. Fans are good if you keep the windows open for a through draft

You can put your toddler in the buggy asleep and go out too

Qilin · 07/08/2023 07:56

Aircon

Have done hot weather without a couple of times years ago and it's awful. Lack of sleep, over heated child who also can't sleep properly and no real respite from it. A fab just moves the hot air around, even if you stand cold water in Front of it.

Never again - air on every time.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 07/08/2023 07:58

Definitely air con. Your toddler is unlikely to sleep in a stuffy hotel room when the temperature is in the mid-thirties anyway.

You don't need to sit in the hotel room in silence all night either - keep her up with you and sit in the restaurant or by the pool. She can sleep in her pushchair.

knitnerd90 · 07/08/2023 07:58

I would lean towards aircon (I live on the east coast of the US and have central air) however, several things affect this:

humidity (dry climate with significant temperature drops at night, versus humid climate with warm nights)
airflow
building design

as someone who lives in a humid climate: if it's not dry, you want the air con or you will be too sticky to sleep.

Changinglegs · 07/08/2023 07:59

30s at night is very warm. As PP said is this a place with mosquitoes in which case you may sit out unless the place is netted. All fans are not created equal and if it’s weak it will be miserable. If it’s 30s at night you may also be in the room during the day. Air con for a holiday when you don’t have time to get used to the heat.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/08/2023 08:01

We always have a one bed place and dd sleeps on sofa bed and once she is asleep we watch tv /eat /talk with lights on - if have an early night

You don't need to sit in the dark and quiet

always have air con at those temps plus a pool

When a toddler we would take a buggy and she would sleep in it and we would come back 10pm and transfer
