phone handed in, or not?

Posting for traffic, altho i guess aibu to not know what to do?

lost my phone yesterday, 75% sure in shop C. realised after going in shop A-F. Worked my way backwards and asked in every shop. In C i walked round and looked myself, asked the guy on the till "Bob" and the woman who'd served me "Mandy". Nothing.

Put a post on FB community page in case i'd lost it on the street etc.

Guy messages and says yes, i handed that in at C circa X o-clock to Mandy.

By now shop is closed. I go down at 8 am today. No phone. Mandy isn't in. Mananger calls Mandy, no reply. Manager calls Bob, he says he knows nothing. Manager says i'll call Mandy later and let you know, and I can check CCTV.

What do i do though if Tammy denies all knowledge and mananger says she's checked CCTV? Assume he's a crank who lied? Report it to the police anyway? I don't want to accuse this woman of anything, but similarly i've looked at this guys FB, middle aged man, kids, grandkids, he doesn't seem the sort to be a crank.

And yes, i know i should know better than to lose my phone.

Don’t you have find a friend on a laptop you can use? Go back as soon as shop is open.

YourNameGoesHere · 05/08/2023 09:15

Did you post which shops you'd been in before he commented? I'd be very suspicious of Mandy as he knew her name and freely gave you that information that he'd given it to her plus you know for definite she was working and if the time he gave matched up if he much more inclined to believe him.

I would wait to see what the CCTV shows but it certainly sounds like Mandy kept the phone to me.

sorry, critical thing. my battery is dead. the last location is roughly near there but i can't track it because it isn't charged.

I can't remember if i said Shop C on the post, i deleted it once he'd replied so i didn't get a ton of other messages cos i thought it was sorteds

sorry, he didnt say Mandy, i was to make it clearer to understand. He did say the woman tho, altho i will ask him if he knows who it was if the shop say no. there was one woman and one man in, that was it.

uugghhh he's just confirmed where he found phone and it was def where i thought i'd lost it, and when he handed it in (must have been in the shop with me, think he picked it up literally behind me and handed it in before i got served) which means when i went back to check, it should have already been behind the till.

Do i report to 101? Will they care or say its my own fault and there's no evidence?

You do have evidence though. This gentleman handed in your phone. Mandy and Bob know that and are lying. Hopefully the CCTV also proves his account I would definitely report it.

Oysterbabe · 05/08/2023 09:59

Wait and see what they say about the CCTV, it might all be sorted.

crapactually · 05/08/2023 10:01

This happened to me in a restaurant. Left my phone on a table, realised as soon as I left. We were the last out because my friend was pissing around and they locked the doors behind us

Knocked on the door, told the phone wasn't there and someone must have stolen it despite there only being staff left.

Police did nothing. Hopefully the CCTV in this case might help so I'd call the police but not really expect them to do anything.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/08/2023 10:04

thanks, waiting is killing me, cant just pop in as i have three kids to drag out so hoping she'll call and it will all be fine. i hate thinking the worst of people, i'd always hand it in.
I suppose i'm also worried if she has taken it that the mananger will cover for her to protect her / the shop and just say "oh i checked cctv, its clear"

that's so crap. i mean its so bloody obvious. at least my shop can claim this person is a crank and making it up

I would get it blocked then its useless to mandy if u don't get it back.

PegasusReturns · 05/08/2023 10:10

Presumably if Mandy did steal it, she will at some point plug it in. At that point you’ll be able to trace it.

Dontjudgeme101 · 05/08/2023 10:23

I hope that you get it back op. 💐💐

Exact same thing happened to me too, except it was a local sainsburys and the self check out. They claimed the CCTV was broken…I was the last customer in the store.

IamfeelingConfused · 05/08/2023 10:33

Do you have find your phone with another family member? You would then know exactly where it is and there is also an option to have a message pop up and the phone to make a noise..so the person with the phone would know you know!

CherryMaDeara · 05/08/2023 10:36

I would block/disable the phone if possible so it becomes useless to Mandy.

Will make it more likely she will give it back.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/08/2023 10:38

So, the shop called and say they have my phone. no idea what happened, if it ewas just miscommunication or some trying their luck. only care that its there when i get there and i can stop the spiralling thoughts of self hatred for losing my phone

OP posts:
YourNameGoesHere · 05/08/2023 10:42

I'm so glad they have the phone and you're getting it back. Hopefully it was all a big misunderstanding however the cynic in me suspects Mandy realised she'd been caught out and at which point she magically remember she did in fact have the phone given to her.

Also top marks to the honest gent without whom you'd have just taken Mandy's word for it.

crapactually · 05/08/2023 10:44

Great news! I agree someone was trying it on then realised they were busted.

I'd be popping in and giving Mandy a bit of side eye.

Dombasle · 05/08/2023 10:47

I'm glad you're getting your phone back.

I imagine the shop assistant thought it would be a good phone to pass on to a relative but was then told that the phone will be useless as the owner will probably block it.

Then the store owner/manager put a bit of heat on by saying that someone has come forward to say they've handed the phone to her and she's panicked and made up a story and said something like she thought the woman has asked if a red phone had been handed in and the phone she had behind the counter was black.

Sadly some people are chancers.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/08/2023 10:51

Oh I’m so glad you have found it.

don’t go too hard on yourself. Literally everyone has mislaid their phone at some point.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/08/2023 10:53

yeah, i made an error on who handed it in (man messaged me but it was actually his wife) so potentially if they'd have checked CCTV they wouldn't have found the right thing, just the manager saying "she's quote specific about when but don't worry, i can check CCTV to confirm what you've said" would probably be enough. Its a chain but not one i imagine pays tons, we're in a very WC area, phone is a Redmi so def not worth losing a job over. But i think if i ever want to go in there again, i'm happy to accept she wasn't thinking straight when i asked and then put it somewhere safe at the end of the day, but not where they'd usually put in. Manager called and she immediately said "oh yeah, its inside the tea pot in the staff room, gosh i've been thinking i hope the owner comes back in!!"

As the OP was in the shop when her phone was handed in it's also possible that Mandy thought the OP had seen the male customer hand the phone in and was a chancer herself.

YourNameGoesHere · 05/08/2023 11:42

As the OP was in the shop when her phone was handed in it's also possible that Mandy thought the OP had seen the male customer hand the phone in and was a chancer herself.

That makes no sense. Surely all Mandy would have to do is ask the OP the make of the phone and what the lock screen image was.

I would imagine most people would notice pretty quickly that they had lost their phone so it's feasible they would still be in the shop when it was handed in.

In any event I hope the OP is reunited with it asap and doesn't beat herself up about losing it, it happens all the time.
