To think this should be cancelled due to the weather?

First world problems I know, and maybe it's my age, but I've got tickets to see Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds this afternoon/evening.

It's at an outdoor venue on grass and whilst not in a yellow weather warning area, the forecast is non stop rain with thunderstorms all day until about 9/10pm. I'm not convinced that I want to spend 8 hours in a field in torrential rain. I realise I am describing a typical Glastonbury experience, so maybe it is my age! But having paid for the tickets one part of me thinks that I should waterproof up and just get on with it, the other part thinks I should just forget about the money spent on tickets and stay home in the dry!!

Secretly I am hoping that it will be cancelled because no one will want to travel in this weather to stand in the rain for 8 hours....

I have checked the t&c on the tickets/venue website and can't find anything about bad weather/cancellations.

AIBU to think that it should be cancelled given the weather conditions? (Regardless of whether you think I am being unreasonable to go and see NG Grin)

I don’t think they’ll cancel. Gigs often go ahead in rain .

KajsaKavat · 05/08/2023 07:44

No, they cancel things far too easily these days. Rain doesn’t hurt, many people will still want to go.

Unless the ground/ area becomes dangerous then it’s unlikely to be cancelled.

it’s the risk you take when you book an outdoor event

greenteaandmarshmallows · 05/08/2023 07:45

They won't cancel unless it becomes a health and safety thing. They'll not want to lose the income.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 05/08/2023 07:46

They won't cancel unless it's dangerous - that doesn't mean you have to go if you don't want to get soaking wet though.

That's also why I wouldn't book an outdoor concert in the first place Wink

MeinKraft · 05/08/2023 07:46

It takes vast amounts of planning and logistics to get these gigs arranged and all set up, they can't just cancel it because of a bit of rain.

dressedforcomfort · 05/08/2023 07:47

I'm going to an outdoor gig tonight. Just going to wear sensible shoes and a raincoat and crack on tbh.

Hufflepods · 05/08/2023 07:50

YABU they don’t cancel a gig because of some rain 🙄

Sugarfree23 · 05/08/2023 07:52

Unlikely to be cancelled because of rain. These events cost a small fortune to put on, everything from hire of the stage, to the minimum wage stewards that will all need paying.

Go to your nearest outdoor shop buy a pair of wellies, and waterproofs. Take a couple of bin bags with you.
At the end of the night stand on one to strip all the wet muddy gear of. And stuff it all into the other bin bag.

JamieFrasersSassenach · 05/08/2023 07:56

I know you are all right - I just never expected torrential rain in August when I bought the tickets!

Big girl waterproofs on then!!

Nobody really expects it either.
About 15 years ago I was at one where it was drizzly rain all day. The grass very quickly just turned to mud.

Hence the advice to get waterproofs and wellies.

Knackeredhamster · 05/08/2023 08:19

They'd probably only cancel if high persistent winds meant a danger.

Oh that's almost a name for the band 😁

Definitely will be wearing wellies & waterproofs, the forecast is heavy rain persistently with a few thunderstorms all day - so more than drizzle. I think the ground will be mush 🤦‍♀️

Yes wear waterproofs . The damp will likely still get to you. I’d also wrap some leggings and plimsoles and a dry t shirt in a carrier bag and pop it in your rucksack . That way you can change into those things to travel home or grab a pint in a late pub somewhere afterwards feeling fresh and comfy.

I would stay at home!! We went to see Faithless a few years ago... but the weather was awful and they were due to come on around 1am.. after sheltering in a tent for a while and dealing with really stinky mud (the festival had been on for several days already).. we decided to just go home.

This is my worry I suppose - we will drive there (about an hours drive) get drenched watching the support bands and just feel to wet to stay to the end.

We could go later and miss the support bands - will float that idea with DH.....

Hi OP, I live about a mile from where this festival is, all the FB groups are saying it’s very very muddy on the field and there are lots of people trying to sell tickets off, but I can’t see it being cancelled.
can you leave the festival site for a bit and go for a cocktail/dry off in the town for a bit if it’s really bad?
I’ve never been to the festival but town it’s usually full of glittter faced revellers over this weekend.

gogomoto · 05/08/2023 08:41

Unless it's dangerous they won't. We've had thunderstorms predicted 3 times this week and none so far, it's hardly a reliable forecast

Badknitter · 05/08/2023 08:42

They played a festival near me yesterday and it went ahead in the pouring rain outside, so it won’t be cancelled today

Thank you for the heads up - maybe lots wont turn up then, I thinking we should give it a try but be prepared to leave before seeing Noel.
Will have a search on FB

There'll be people there selling those waterproof ponchos

Popsicle42 · 05/08/2023 08:48

I would go just for the headline set, if you’re not bothered for the support bands.

dudsville · 05/08/2023 08:48

The fact that you bought the tickets puts us in different camps already, but there's absolutely no way i would enjoy that. I'd stay home!
