To think this should be cancelled due to the weather?

First world problems I know, and maybe it's my age, but I've got tickets to see Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds this afternoon/evening.

It's at an outdoor venue on grass and whilst not in a yellow weather warning area, the forecast is non stop rain with thunderstorms all day until about 9/10pm. I'm not convinced that I want to spend 8 hours in a field in torrential rain. I realise I am describing a typical Glastonbury experience, so maybe it is my age! But having paid for the tickets one part of me thinks that I should waterproof up and just get on with it, the other part thinks I should just forget about the money spent on tickets and stay home in the dry!!

Secretly I am hoping that it will be cancelled because no one will want to travel in this weather to stand in the rain for 8 hours....

I have checked the t&c on the tickets/venue website and can't find anything about bad weather/cancellations.

AIBU to think that it should be cancelled given the weather conditions? (Regardless of whether you think I am being unreasonable to go and see NG Grin)

Rain rarely cancels one off gigs, it’s the wind you need to be wary of but currently it’s nowhere near levels that would cause problems. They aren’t going to cancel because it’s a bit unpleasant, only if it’s dangerous because they would then have to refund everyone. I’d just go in good waterproofs and take a full change of clothes and a towel in the car, along with a flask of soup (I do sporting events in the rain a lot in winter and these are a must!)

I’ve been to outdoor music and comedy in the pouring rain, I would have had massive regret if I’d not gone. Put waterproofs on and warm clothes, wear walking boots if you have any as these will keep your feet dry. Take a towel if you have a seat at the gig so you can dry it off. Nice warm shower when you get home. Have a good time!

Supernova23 · 05/08/2023 11:20

If it's someone you want to see, definitely go. Good waterproof coat and trousers, wellies, and a change of clothes as soon as it finishes (if needed). My motto is there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. Well, to be honest, the weather is terrible.....but doesn't need to make you miserable physically if you dress for it! no reason for you to soak with proper waterproofs.

Tips for gigs in rain:

Wellies
Baseball hat to keep rain off your face
Layers as you'll get cold
Camping stool if allowed
Hand warmers

We went to see the spice girls in Bristol it was awful rain from 3pm til the min we left the stadium at 11pm. We were soaked right thru to our bones and I didn't take a coat coz I didn't read the forecast!

We will never forget the night coz of the rain . It was one of the most memorable nights coz it was such a washout !!!! It was so bad it was almost funny.

Go and enjoy the night, least it will give you lasting memories.

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/08/2023 11:39

Ha ha! That is true. Mr Monkey and his friends still talk about the Glastonbury where their tents washed away and they ended up "refguees" housed in a communal marquee.

Createausername1970 · 05/08/2023 11:46

Wellies and waterproofs. And a small rucksack with some dry clothes for later if necessary (nothing worse than travelling home soggy) wrapped in a carrier bag, with another spare carrier to put dry clothes into. If your waterproof is big enough to go over the rucksack, even better.

Also, put tickets, mobile, money, into a small sandwich bag. If it's raining a lot, the water can penetrate unexpectedly and things can get wet.

lastminutewednesday · 05/08/2023 11:51

Of course it won't be cancelled just for rain! If that were the case half of all the festivals that have ever been would be called off.

golddustwomen · 05/08/2023 12:02

Last time I saw Noel's High Flying Birds it was absolutely pissing down and the best night ever!!

ChristmasFluff · 05/08/2023 12:04

Two memories came back as I read this - 1985 Glastonbury (utterly miserable) and Weston Park V in 2007.

After a weekend of rain, Snow Patrol were playing, and the clouds broke just slightly as the sun went down. It was a gorgeous and communally bonding moment that even the renewed drizzle later on cannot dim in my memory.

You will love it, I'm sure, cos nothing is bad like 1985 Glastonbury was bad, and there will be so many special moments, I am sure!

Keykaty · 05/08/2023 12:04

If you have a dry robe, use it.

Or a poncho with hood and wellies. Fleece or hoodie underneath. Change of clothes as mentioned.

Everyone else will be knee deep in mud and wet and cold too. But you will enjoy it I promise you.

DaisyThistle · 05/08/2023 12:05

The best gig I ever went to was in torrential rain. Get your wellies on and have fun.

Azandme · 05/08/2023 12:10

We got drowned seeing Sting last month.

It was still an amazing gig.

Just make sure your waterproof IS waterproof. Ours turned out not to be 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣.

kitsuneghost · 05/08/2023 12:15

It's only 1 day it's not like 4 days in a row and all your clothes and bedding are wet and muddy and you have no dower gor days
Yeah you'll get wet, you'll go home, have a hot shower, clean jammies and comfie bed.

Clean jammies and bed are always so much nicer after being out in rain all day

Iactuallylovedit · 05/08/2023 12:25

We went to an all day event a month ago where the weather was awful, I was in 8 layers including scarf, thermals and gloves. Nuts in July but it worked. As everyone says, you'll freeze if you get really cold. Just go, it will be great! Hot drinks and towels, have fun!

Tidsleytiddy · 05/08/2023 12:31

Hope it’s not cancelled. My son and his girlfriend are going. Just accept it’s going to be wet, tie your hair up and dress for the weather. Enjoy!! x

TheaBrandt · 05/08/2023 12:39

Good idea to have lots of warm clothes in car we got drenched at party in the park was surprised how quickly we got properly bone chillingly cold even though it was July. <Plans retirement in south of France>

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/08/2023 12:57

@TheaBrandt less common occurancd but I have been to outdoor gig in the South of France where there was an absolutely biblical thunderstorm. The difference was we were relocated indoors!

scrivette · 05/08/2023 13:06

Leave flasks of warm drinks and more snacks in the car in case you have to wait a long time in the car park.

At one memorable festival I went to I discovered that a thick black bin liner with holes snipped out for arms and head made an excellent waterproof cover up!

Pinkitydrinkity · 05/08/2023 13:08

Surely the risk of rain is something you have to accept when you book tickets to an outdoor gig in the UK?!

OttilieBottilie · 05/08/2023 13:12

@queenofthewild we were there too, it was fantastic despite the downpours!

Totally soggy but we wore waterproof trousers and coats over warm clothes. Should have worn wellies too as our feet got soggy. It was actually warmest and driest in the crowd at the front.

Honeyroar · 05/08/2023 13:21

I’d have to really love the band to go! But they won’t cancel unless it’s bad enough to claim on their insurance.

Wear winter waterproof coats. I work outside and summer waterproof coats go through much quicker! You could also take cagoules that you can wear underneath the big waterproof coats if those start leaking. And dance as much as you can - it’s the standing still that gets you chilled.

Mischance · 05/08/2023 13:23

If you run outdoor events in UK (as my family do) then you cannot offer refunds for bad weather and you just carry on regardless of the weather. The organisers will lose any "walk-up" on the day and will be skating on thin ice financially.

JimnJoyce · 05/08/2023 13:25

I've had a couple of these type of things recently. Honestly just wish I hadn't gone! Was so wet there and when I got home it spoiled it for me.
