To think this should be cancelled due to the weather?

First world problems I know, and maybe it's my age, but I've got tickets to see Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds this afternoon/evening.

It's at an outdoor venue on grass and whilst not in a yellow weather warning area, the forecast is non stop rain with thunderstorms all day until about 9/10pm. I'm not convinced that I want to spend 8 hours in a field in torrential rain. I realise I am describing a typical Glastonbury experience, so maybe it is my age! But having paid for the tickets one part of me thinks that I should waterproof up and just get on with it, the other part thinks I should just forget about the money spent on tickets and stay home in the dry!!

Secretly I am hoping that it will be cancelled because no one will want to travel in this weather to stand in the rain for 8 hours....

I have checked the t&c on the tickets/venue website and can't find anything about bad weather/cancellations.

AIBU to think that it should be cancelled given the weather conditions? (Regardless of whether you think I am being unreasonable to go and see NG Grin)

I know you are all right - I just never expected torrential rain in August when I bought the tickets!

Big girl waterproofs on then!!

My son’s birthday is mid August and trust me it rains a lot in August.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/08/2023 08:52

I would skip the support acts, and I bet a lot of others will too. It's really only worth a soaking to see the artist you booked for.

They won't cancel though, because this summer would bankrupt any act that cancelled for rain.

Campervangirl · 05/08/2023 08:54

I went to a Party in the Park event in torrential rain and I've also seen Meatloaf at an outdoor event in torrential rain.
I froze at both, wet through.
Glad to read that you're going in the car, go in weatherproof clothes and leave a couple of dressing gowns in the car, strip down when you get back to the car and put your dressing gowns on, nowt worse than traveling home wet and cold.
I stripped down to my knickers and Tshirt in the car park at both events and I wasn't the only one

cuckyplunt · 05/08/2023 08:55

Go and buy yourself a set of really good waterproofs and a pair of Hunter wellies. You can do anything with the right clothes.

sashagabadon · 05/08/2023 08:55

Noel Gallagher was playing on the beach in Brighton last week in high winds and rain. Now that really did look miserable but at least not muddy!

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 05/08/2023 08:57

Omg, we are in Britain in the summer, the default is rain

The fact that you bought the tickets puts us in different camps already, but there's absolutely no way i would enjoy that. I'd stay home!

🤣🤣🤣

Great idea - will put dressing gowns and towels in the car.

Thank you all for all of your replies and suggestions - I'm feeling much more positive about it all now!

And you never know, the forecast could be wrong.......

Go for it but be cautious where you park your car. Will you be able to get it out if it's bogged down in a muddy field?

RabbitsRock · 05/08/2023 09:09

Would love to see them live!

Sugarfree23 · 05/08/2023 09:14

They'll have tractors ready to pull people out but be prepared for a wait in the car park.
Definitely need dry clothes for the car home.

You don't want the inside of the car to get filthy.

miniaturepixieonacid · 05/08/2023 09:18

They can't cancel. Too much money lost. Very 9ccasionally, shows at Regebts Park theatre are cancelled for extreme weather but they can just offer the audience another performance date. Gigs can't do that.

I would go for at least some of the time so that you get the expetience and the money isn't wasted. But I don't think I'd stay the whole time, sadly. Unless it was incredible.

VinEtFromage · 05/08/2023 09:24

Yeah, not quite the day sitting in the sun you imagined, but if I was able to see someone/a band, I really wanted to id go but when they're due to be on, sorry support acts!

StinkerTroll · 05/08/2023 09:25

Went to see an outdoor show last week and it RAINED! It still went ahead as planned, only thing that it gets cancelled for is very high winds, overhead thunder storms and monsoon style rains, just about the whole audience was there and we all endured, it was a great show, loved it! Dress for the weather and embrace it! Enjoy!

Qilin · 05/08/2023 09:34

Check out all the other acts first and decide what time to arrive based on who you really want to see.

Good proper waterproofs and decent high wellies. Avoid thick materials like jeans in your legs if not wearing waterproof trousers. Bear kegs or something thin will dry quicker.

Towels and a clothes change in the car for afterwards.

I've done the outdoor concert in the rain and it can get cold after dark. But I'd rather have cold legs than soggy denim clinging on.

Largeslice · 05/08/2023 09:49

Just go. The gig on Brighton beach was shit weather but a great show.

Suck it up buttercup.

neonjumper · 05/08/2023 09:58

We went to tramlines in Sheffield, absolutely horrendous... slipping about everywhere , the hay they'd put down just turned into clumps, we bought plastic ponchos and I had a brolly but it was awful ... we had bought tickets specifically to see Paul heaton but left a couple of hours beforehand. We had held on for a couple of hours in the undercover VIP area but it was so cold and miserable and very slippery

My daughter was there with friends and slipped and twisted her knee .

If your going ... I'd advise really sturdy shoes with grip , walking boots would be perfect , good quality very long rain poncho ( some people had the long swimming coats on )
Make sure phone's is in something waterproof... we saw a few people drop phones in the mud ... if there's a VIP area pay extra for it .... being able to access drinks / loos/ food / undercover areas made the experience just about doable .

Strong memories of sitting in the pouring rain at an outdoor cinema event in Hyde Park!

A few years ago we were at a festival in deepest Southern France and the main evening venue was an open air threatre on the edge of the sea. It began to rain moderately heavily (usual weather 30 degree plus sunshine) and they halted proceedings until the rain stopped. The UK contigent were baffled.

SOWK · 05/08/2023 10:10

Audley end? There are trees around the edge that might give some shelter if you are happy not to see anything.

99victoria · 05/08/2023 10:10

I've just done Park Run. I had my waterproof running jacket on but when I got home I stripped off and literally all my clothes were soaking wet - even my knickers. My socks were squelching and I couldn't see anything because my glasses were drenched. My hands were cold because they were so wet but it's not really cold enough to wear gloves! I'm now sitting here in a towelling dressing gown and I still feel cold and wet.

It's not just the rain - there's a really strong wind which was blowing the wind straight into my face and onto the front of my trousers so they were very quickly soaked through. It's also a bit chilly when the wind blows.

And I was only out for an hour in total.

I definitely wouldn't be going OP 😏

queenofthewild · 05/08/2023 10:13

We saw Richard Ashcroft a week or two ago in similar weather. I wasn't looking forward to it, but actually it was a lovely evening. It was wet, but not cold and I wore a big hood to keep my face dry.

The lighting effects look fabulous in the wet.

Only downside was the car refused to start sitting in a damp field all evening. If you have an older car take a jump start kit!

ReviewingTheSituation · 05/08/2023 10:25

Kaiser Chiefs were playing at Warwick Castle a few weeks ago, on an evening where it chucked it down. We sat in the pub nearby and watched as people came out - absolutely soaked through, but all in great spirits and looking happy. If you want to see the gig then a the rain shouldn't put a stop to it. Waterproofs and a poncho should do it. It's a shame it's so cold though - if it's warm and rainy then shorts are the best thing to wear (skin being more waterproof than any clothes) but it's much too chilly for that!

DivineLillith · 05/08/2023 10:45

Make flasks of tea or coffee for when you return to the car.

Always best to wear multiple thin layers under waterproofs, you can get quite hot and sweaty. I’m amazing at getting layers off underneath outer layers, DH says I’m like Houdini.

Spanielsarepainless · 05/08/2023 10:50

Just go if it's not cancelled. I remember family holidays on the east coast, wearing Fair Isle jerseys over swimming stuff in the rain and wind. Character forming... Have hot drinks in the car for afterwards and possibly a hip flask.
