Do I need to go to hospital?

I’ve got an infected bite that’s not clearing from anti biotics in fact it’s spreading. Virtual GP app yesterday said looked like cellulitis gave me some antibiotics beginning with F. It’s been 48 hrs and it’s just getting bigger. I’ve made another virtual GP app but do I need to be seen in person at urgent care or anything?

really conscious because I know someone who had cellulitis that ended up septic on a drip In hospital

I have been ill for five weeks with my gallbladder on and off. Now in hospital as I couldn’t keep anything down for 5 days including antibiotics. Now in hospital on a drip and getting gallbladder out tomorrow. Don’t put it off.

Zeborah · 04/08/2023 20:03

I had this and was admitted to hospital. You need IV antibiotics

PinotPony · 04/08/2023 20:04

My mum had cellulitis recently. The redness tracked up her leg and her CRP was raised, even after she'd commenced IV antibiotics. When I questioned the consultant, he advised that it can take a couple of days for the antibiotics to have effect. Sure enough, the redness subsided after a few days.

But, if you're worried, go to A&E. That's what it's there for...

Toodaloobaloo · 04/08/2023 20:07

I would for cellulitis. My dad had to have iv antibiotics in hospital for the same thing, it can get nasty quite fast.

Megcan · 04/08/2023 20:08

Yes you see to get to A&E. I also got cellulitis from a bite , if it is warm to the touch you need to go now.

Bristolnewcomer · 04/08/2023 20:08

Glad you're on your way in - I kept getting told to see the pharmacist too who basically told me to put savlon on it 🙄

Spent all of next morning in A&E, saturday is a terrible day to go!

@Ohgodmylegmyleg

No, you said you called ASDA not your DH.

"I called asda and they were confused also"

Ralye · 04/08/2023 20:01

Good.

@Ohgodmylegmyleg Let them know it's spread, did you draw a line or anything around the redness?

All the best.

I did yeah, it hurts to put weight on too

I've had an infected finger for 6 weeks now, Flucloxacillin did diddly squat, it was only when I was put on Erythromycin that I could see a difference. Flucloxacillin in fact made me really poorly. Hope you feel better soon, OP.

I had cellulitis on my ankle @Ohgodmylegmyleg and mine hurt when I put weight on it. Try not to worry, you're getting it checked now and doing the right thing. Just don't dither, as others said, can get nasty quickly.

Jadeywithababy · 04/08/2023 20:10

So glad you’re going to hospital! Please don’t worry about being a burden, I work in a hospital and we’d so much rather head off a nasty infection with IV abx than have you on ITU with sepsis.

Dh called on his phone whilst I getting ready and ordering an Uber from my phone, I spoke to them

I’m a nurse and I second this. You are doing the right thing going in. Infections can get nasty alarmingly quickly.

Greenfree · 04/08/2023 20:12

I'd go straight to a&e, did they give you some strong antihistamines too? When I had a swollen bite the antihistamines stopped the swelling and the redness from spreading

dreamygirl25 · 04/08/2023 20:16

Hope you are OK OP. Sounds scary.

RoyalImpatience · 04/08/2023 20:19

Nope no antihistamines just the anti biotics. Hopefully I’ll be in and out soon. Urgent care seems quite busy though

Had exactly this on holiday in Spain recently. Terrible infected bite covering just about my entire calf. Ended up calling the 24 hour doctor at our hotel as I was also worried about cellulitis. He gave me an injection of steroids and antihistamine and prescribed steroid tablets in addition to the antibiotics I was taking. That seemed to help as the swelling and redness started to clear the next morning. Good luck.

ShatteredMum23 · 04/08/2023 20:25

Yes, spreading is not good. You don't want to develop sepsis. Go to urgent treatment centre / walk in unit

FloNightingale · 04/08/2023 20:25

You may need a dose of iv antibiotics to ‘kick start’ your current treatment. Hope you don’t have to wait too long.

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 04/08/2023 20:28

Glad you're now at urgent care. I once had someone from 111 tell me to scratch the top off an infected bite. It was quite a few years ago at the start of the 111 service provision and the mists of time have removed any recollection of WHY I was supposed to do that... Needless to say I didn't and got myself to a weekend walk in centre for ABs.
Hope you get sorted soon.

madamovaries · 04/08/2023 20:28

Go to A&E. I had the exact same thing happen and had a dreadful ex who thought I was being a wimp complaining about the whole thing. Luckily my boss saw it and sent me straight to A&E. if I hadn’t have had it treated, the (lovely) doctor said I would have had nerve damage in my hand.

Also Draw with a pen around the edge of it and mark the time you have down that so you can show it is getting worse

sending you love and best wishes for a quick recovery x

I would go, cellulitis isn't caused by a bite anyway is it?

Sounds like a bite that's gone dodgily manky.

I got cellulitis from falling off my bed while changing the duvet so I guess anything's possible!
