Desperate for help (Birmingham, Twitter, car keys, NCP)

AIBU to beg for help from strangers on the internet?

I’m on holiday in Birmingham with three kids. I parked in an NCP car park on Monday night and we’ve been staying in a car park since.

We checked out this morning to leave and head home (Brighton) via Coventry to see my Nan (90 years old).

I can’t find my car keys 🤦🏻‍♀️

I hope you are okay now Op and aren’t too shaken from todays events.

It might be good to get key insurance added to existing insurance or try a 3rd party like Keycare and add a tile to your keys in the future.

I actually have a purse with an internal key ring so it’s harder to misplace.
A cheap alternative is to add bells ( the local police team gave me some ) to add on my purse to deter pick pockets.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/08/2023 18:38

I once threw my car keys into a McDonald's bin when I scraped the tray into it. I didn't realise until hours later

SardineJam · 04/08/2023 18:39

My car insurance provides replacement key coverage, worth checking this to at least cover some of the AA costs 🤞

Mumontherunn · 04/08/2023 18:43

In the boot? That happened to me once

I tipped my bag out @DanceWithTheBigBoysAgain. They’re not there.

I once came home from a hotel and my door keys were missing. I emptied every pocket of my bag out on the doorstep... nothing. I drove back to the hotel and checked every inch of the room... nothing. I emptied bag again... nothing. Got back in the car and emptied bag for 3rd time onto passenger seat. Keys appeared!!! Mad.

Yarnorama · 04/08/2023 18:43

Hoping you're on your way, OP, and that you all recover from the stress of it all quickly Flowers

Did you have to dig though the bin?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 04/08/2023 19:27

I bought a replacement key recently from a main dealer. I think it was £250ish and I had to show the V5, even though I had one key. Hope AA have done the trick and your nightmare is over.

Any update?
@LostCarKeys

WiddlinDiddlin · 04/08/2023 19:34

Don't just tip bags out, squeeze around inside and out, feel if they're stuck in a pocket or lining or under a stiffener at the bottom somewhere.

£10 says you find it shortly after the AA bloke sorts you a new key.

MrsPositivity1 · 04/08/2023 19:34

Hope you got sorted

Xenia · 04/08/2023 19:50

Lining of coat is worth considering. I have a hole in one coat pocket inside it and if I forget and u se it keys slip right inside the lining and almost disappear in its bottomless pit. Car breakdown cover might cover putting it on a van still locked and taking you and the car back to you home.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 04/08/2023 19:51

Is there a tear in the lining of your bag? I've found things years later that had slipped beneath the lining.

This won't help you now but: When I travel by car, I hide a spare key somewhere in my luggage, in case I lose the main set.

So sorry you are being hit with this extra expense. I hope you get to see your Nan. Can you spend one extra night in the hotel? I know it's a cost.

Pushpull · 04/08/2023 19:53

I hope you're home. It's so stressful when something like this happens!

Sandinyourshoes · 04/08/2023 20:04

Someone I know lost their car keys, had to get their car towed home, afterwards found the keys in the spare wheel well in the boot, under the spare wheel.

A customer did this when I worked in McD's during the 90s.
I looked through the bins until I found them.

QuestionableMouse · 04/08/2023 20:22

I've dug more keys, phones, dental aids (retainers, dentures) and wallets front McDonald's bins than I care to remember 🙈😂

YABU for going to Birmingham for a holiday

Trying to be edgy and funny or just downright rude?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 04/08/2023 20:58

So you tipped them mistakenly out of your bag since you've been in Birmingham . They aren't by the car then. You think you may have been in a shop at the time? Could you have handed them to one of your children to hold for a moment and they've put them in their back back or jacket pocket ?

MaggieFS · 04/08/2023 21:12

I'm hoping the lack of posts is because the OP is driving home.

Makeadecisionalready · 04/08/2023 21:23

My guess is that you'll find them in your raincoat. After you accidentally pulled them out, you put them in your raincoat with a note to self to put them somewhere safer asap
