To be annoyed at DH for reporting local FB seller to Crimewatch?

DH uses our local FB for sale page to sell bits and bobs from time to time.

He noticed that a woman in our village sells a lot of electronic devices and began to look into her selling history and found that she's sold roughly 30-40 iphones and ipads over about 2 years. He counted 5 new and used iPhones and iPads sold in the last month, along with a handful of new Nike shoes. He decided that she must be selling stolen goods (her boyfriend is a drug dealer who was recently arrested and this factored in to his assumption) and decided to report her to Crime Watch!!! against my telling him he not to because A. He doesn't know for sure and was sticking his nose in and B. Was wasting Crime Watch time.

I am quite annoyed at him for being so nosy but mostly his overreaction. I told him to report to FB not to bloody Crimewatch but he went against my advice

He has been watching a lot of true crime lately and I think he thinks he's Detective Inspector Frost.

I don't understand; what's the downside to him reporting?

Its suspicious for someone to be turning over than number of devices over that timeframe. It's pretty likely they are stolen.

It boils down to where you live quite frankly, if you are surrounded by criminal activity then you may stand out for reporting crime and may be targeted. And because crime areas are usually poverty areas, you won't have the option to just 'move house' .
I think this thread shows just how privileged some people are ( whether they admit it or not) and highlights how some people have no option to be crusaders on their own doorsteps.

not good to be known by the local criminals as a grass family.

Why, what do you do to them?

But you called the husband a snitch - isn't that an insult?

If you're going to express nasty views, expect nasty reactions.

CoffeeCantata · 04/08/2023 16:16

More out of apathy than any kind of moral stance I have to be honest.

And that's all it takes for evil to flourish, as the saying goes.

Siouxiesiouxiesioux · 04/08/2023 13:26

I can understand you having an issue with my comment but don’t you think the awful and very personal insult you lob at me is disproportionate to the substance of the argument? Do you get a kick from being so nasty? If so then you might in fact be the weirdo, not me. You might also be a bit of an arsehole.

Yeah, I do. And everyone thinks you're a teenager who is masquerading as an adult. What's the issue with what they've done? You've called someone a snitch. Kids say that because they think it's cool. Scumbags say it because they traffic in fear. Normal functional humans think those who use it are weird. Tell me where I'm wrong.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 04/08/2023 17:59

I assume you mean your husband reported through Crimestoppers, which can be done anonymously, so there's no reason to assume the drug dealer or FB seller will know your husband reported her.

Good on him and I wish more would do the same. The more these situations are ignored the more these low lifes get away with their criminal activity and people end up getting hurt or killed.

You're being very unreasonable OP, your husband is an adult and a good guy. You should appreciate that instead of creating a thread trying to belittle him.

Gingerkittykat · 04/08/2023 18:17

Maybe the woman has a legitimate small business buying and selling used electronics.

Maybe the woman has a legitimate small business buying and selling used electronics.

Then the police will find that out in the course of their enquiries

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 04/08/2023 18:31

Then it won’t be a problem that she got reported.

Yes. This is the most likely outcome. What with her dealer boyfriend. How do you think the second hand electronics market works?

Why? It doesn’t make sense to me that people who set themselves up as holier than thou would come out with foul mouthed insults. They sound like low life scum - to use the language they have levelled at me.

Hello. I'm not holier that thou, I just can't stand thieving scumbags and those that defend or cover for them. Calling people snitches is teenage behaviour. It's embarrassing that you think it's acceptable. I'm embarrassed for you. We all are. Happy to help. Thank you.

Who has levelled a "foul mouthed insult" at you? I saw someone call you a weirdo. Not the friendliest perhaps but certainly not "foul mouthed" and definitely proportionate to you calling a normal person reporting a potential crime a "snitch". If you can't take it, don't dish it out 🤷‍♀️

People who dislike druggies and scumbags stealing from them, or other people, aren't required to be perfect people themselves in order to express the opinion that you're either childish and/or possibly a druggie low level criminal yourself if you harbour the view that reporting suspected crimes is a bad thing.

The privilege, if such it is, is earnt. Communities are just a collection of individuals who subscribe to a common ethos. When the ethos is "snitching is worse than crime" or "everybody does its so it doesn't matter" or "I don't want to get involved" then you reap what you sow.

seafronty · 05/08/2023 09:01

It was me. I called you a weirdo. Then I called you a teenager because you went in a huff. I'll go back to calling you a weirdo. Your post hasn't exactly cleared anything up for anyone. Let me ask you a question. You can phone crimestoppers and they'll remove a thieving scumbags from your neighbourhood. Do you phone crimestoppers or do you not? Answer that one their and let us all see the person who you are.

“If you can't take it, don't dish it out 🤷‍♀️“

i can take it: I called myself a snitch because I have reported real crimes in the past - not what I guessed were crimes.

It is easy to misunderstand people on SM. There is no subtlety or nuance. You can’t see people’s intentions so in a way I get why you have come for me. I put out a throwaway line. I had no idea it would be so incendiary.

i feel that trying to respond to people on here is a waste of my time. I will not be responding to this thread further as I now need to engage with something far more intelligent than this - a good book.

😂 An appropriate level too!

I love the unironic use of "snitch" in this thread, I didn't think anyone used it after the age of 10, roughly.

If this woman is doing nothing wrong, she has nothing to worry about. I wouldn't care if someone reported anything I've sold to Crimestoppers as it's all legitimate and above board.

I knew it. You’ve just learned to read, haven’t you. Hence the recommendation.

I’ll stick to A la Recherche du Temps Perdu Volume 3, thanks.

Crimestoppers not Crimewatch.

And well done him for letting the Police know about dodgy dealings in your local community.

OddsocksinmyDocs · 05/08/2023 09:17

Let's hope your phone doesn't get stolen and ends up on her selling page!

Dombasle · 05/08/2023 09:18

Why would you be annoyed at his community spirit?

Are you one of these awful chav types that lives by the saying 'Stitches for snitches!'?

Well done to him I say.

We need more people like him taking a wider interest in the community.

Ah, I was wondering. Crimewatch is a tv show that's hasn't been on in years, afaik!
