To be annoyed at DH for reporting local FB seller to Crimewatch?

overheadloudjet · 04/08/2023 10:31

DH uses our local FB for sale page to sell bits and bobs from time to time.

He noticed that a woman in our village sells a lot of electronic devices and began to look into her selling history and found that she's sold roughly 30-40 iphones and ipads over about 2 years. He counted 5 new and used iPhones and iPads sold in the last month, along with a handful of new Nike shoes. He decided that she must be selling stolen goods (her boyfriend is a drug dealer who was recently arrested and this factored in to his assumption) and decided to report her to Crime Watch!!! against my telling him he not to because A. He doesn't know for sure and was sticking his nose in and B. Was wasting Crime Watch time.

I am quite annoyed at him for being so nosy but mostly his overreaction. I told him to report to FB not to bloody Crimewatch but he went against my advice

He has been watching a lot of true crime lately and I think he thinks he's Detective Inspector Frost.

Well done to DH - you need to think about why you feel this way! We need more people like your DH.

Nogg · 04/08/2023 12:38

Hopefully they don’t find out it was your DH reporting them . I would be scared of retribution

Buggersticks · 04/08/2023 12:40

Good. There might be 30-40 victims of iPhone theft out there who would be grateful of his detective skills. Imagine if no-one used their intuition..

not good to be known by the local criminals as a grass family.

Do you live in an episode of Shameless?

Yeah, maybe among the pond scum that fund their lifestyles by stealing from the rest of us.

Most of us quite like not to have our hard-earned belongings stolen and flogged for drug money, so would be quite pleased if these crimes were reported and investigated.

Wife2b · 04/08/2023 12:45

Your husband is his own person, he can listen to your views but ultimately it’s his decision. I think he did the right thing FWIW.

HeritageBlooms · 04/08/2023 12:48

Good for your DH! Seconding other posters - people should stick their noses in.

I wish everyone would do that with dogs/puppies for sale on third party selling sites - if everyone reported these, the networks of puppy farmers would be smashed

Third-party puppy sales | Campaigns | The Kennel Club

We are against puppy farmers. England has banned third-party puppy sales, now we want Scotland and Wales to follow suit.

HopityHope · 04/08/2023 12:53

Facebook would do fuck all about it if he reported to them. Of course if he wanted to report it that was the right avenue to do so

Hugasauras · 04/08/2023 11:46

Good. This kind of low-level selling of stolen goods is not a victimless crime. It's often stolen goods from people's homes or cars, leaving those people out of pocket and in some cases without stuff like memories of a loved one or other important pictures and stuff, access to their bank accounts, etc. on tablets and phones. He should report her to HMRC while he's at it.

Absolutely this. It's a horrible crime, especially stuff like phones and tablets, which were probably stolen from people who have next to fuck all themselves and are therefore less likely to have insurance.

And if the goods have been taken to sell in lieu of cash for drugs, she's also complicit in the illegal drug trade, with its links to organised crime and modern slavery, and which causes no end of misery for those who end up with addictions or cannabis-induced psychosis.

Giver your DH a pat on the back from me, OP, it's a shame there aren't more people like him in the world.

If enough people did it, those criminals wouln't be local.

Unless you live round the corner from a prison.

LlynTegid · 04/08/2023 13:12

DH does not want another death of a young black teenager or Olivia Pratt-Korbel, which by condoning the proceeds of crime in a family with a drug dealer he would be doing by remaining silent.

Good on him.

Gymnopedie · 04/08/2023 13:13

against my telling him he not to because A. He doesn't know for sure and was sticking his nose in and B. Was wasting Crime Watch time.

Both of those are very weak (non existent) reasons for not getting involved. In fact they're the reason Crimestoppers was set up.

So:
Why do you consider it sticking his nose in?
Why do you consider it to be wasting Crimestoppers' time?
What's your real reason for not wanting him to get involved?

(Though I doubt the OP will be back to answer them.)

I’m glad people like your husband exist, and would hope more people did the same. I hope if it is dodgy she is caught out

TheHappyCarrot · 04/08/2023 13:15

Grassing and snitching, words only used by the scum who profit from criminal behaviour.

Try keeping the law and the world will be a better place.

Siouxiesiouxiesioux · 04/08/2023 12:23

I agree with her. He's a snitch.

The rest of the normal world thinks you're a weirdo.

I can understand you having an issue with my comment but don’t you think the awful and very personal insult you lob at me is disproportionate to the substance of the argument? Do you get a kick from being so nasty? If so then you might in fact be the weirdo, not me. You might also be a bit of an arsehole.

Lol.
I'm out&proud as the "snitch" of my street.
No one, ever calls cops here for anything. It was becoming increasingly unsafe. No more, time for the scum to move on.
My last two reports are: a violent night time break-in on a weed factory house two doors down and a banned dog breed out of control on the street - I even supplied photos and a video to leave no doubt.

I hope to busybody the feck out of the local filth.

Well done to OP's husband!

Skodacool · 04/08/2023 13:46

Are we going to get a response from OP?

I would hope everybody would report the things that you reported (I am also someone who calls the police if I see things especially if it involves someone being hurt). I once directed the police to a man I could see breaking into a car in the early hours of the morning. That was fun because when they arrived and caught him I saw him looking around to see who had snitched but I was just peeping through my curtains with the light switched off so he couldn’t see me, but would I report what the op’s husband did? I don’t think I would. More out of apathy than any kind of moral stance I have to be honest.

But definitely makes me a "snitch" according to some. It just ain't bothering me that term.

Yellowlegobrick · 04/08/2023 14:04

I don't understand; what's the downside to him reporting?

Its suspicious for someone to be turning over than number of devices over that timeframe. It's pretty likely they are stolen.

There used to be a really popular poster who had that word as a signature

He was immature too

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 04/08/2023 14:39

This is exactly what Crime stoppers is for. You report suspicious activity, the police decide whether to follow up or not, often based upon receiving multiple reports or an individual being otherwise of interest.

It doesn't matter if you are sure, that's not your job, you aren't the magistrate/jury. You report, the police investigate and pass the evidence to the CPS to prosecute.

It doesn't matter if it is a minor crime, the police will ignore it if they don't think it is worth following up.

There is nothing to lose by reporting but you can reduce crime locally.
