Mine would be breached within seconds. Even the strong ones Shock

Mine are 12-15 letters and 3 numbers, (3 of the letters are uppercase...) So they would take some cracking I think.

ChittyBangabang · 04/08/2023 00:06

Longer passwords do seem the way forward.

Irritating though Confused

Yes. I use a password manager generator. I don't even know what my password logins are. I just have 1 password to get into a vault and it auto completes all my logins. Synced up to my phone it's fingerprint access only.

ErikaReadsTheDailyMail · 04/08/2023 00:07

3 years... pleased with that.
(No wonder I can never remember them!)

Does that work across all devices?

3 years for me apparently!

Yes. I use Bitwarden. You can download app and/or add extension on your browser.

Surely this makes your accounts less secure because if that password is compromised, the hacker would have access to all your accounts? Or is the password to access all your other passwords your fingerprint?

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 04/08/2023 00:12

According to that 15k years. Numbers, letters, upper and lower case and symbols. If my dh saw it wrote out he’d not know what it actually referred to but I know.

Bookchildtable · 04/08/2023 00:14

1m years I'm surprised it's that high. Have upper and lower case, 1 symbol, 4 numbers.

EBearhug · 04/08/2023 00:14

I've got a while, but I used to run the team managing a lot of systems accounts at work, so you'd hope I would have some idea of password security.

It's not impossible for the vault to be hacked but highly unlikely and if they did, the data is encrypted and would appear as jumbled and totally unusable to read. The 1 master password you use is the only key to get into the vault or if you have it set up on your phone you can acces the vault with your fingerprint and then use the app to fill in your login details to all your websites or apps.

Yes- we have to for work- so my passwords are 14-18 characters - all of them! I use song titles these days interspersed with random numbers/characters. I'm not 'allowed' to store them or keep a record anywhere by all accounts but my very old school paper diary has a few clues for me on those forgetful days. We got sent this at work so I've amended all my personal passwords as well.

Jasperz · 04/08/2023 00:27

Does that table differentiate between dictionary words, or does it relate to random characters?

If it only have seconds to break yours, a quick way to improve them is a passphrase - string some words together - even better if 1 is not really a word - and throw in a few numbers, uppercase letters or symbols just coz most systems insist on them. For example SpaceSllipperzBeetle29

You can create associations for the words to make them memorable, for example imagine a beetle with 29 legs wearing slippers in space.

DoAWheelie · 04/08/2023 00:32

My passwords fall into the green box and are very hard to crack. They are simple to remember as I use short sentences that mean something to me and throw in a couple of capitals and a random symbol on the end.

Something like a list of your 5 childhood friends names is easy to remember and very hard to brute force and you can then write down a hint to jog your memory somewhere without ever writing down the password.

DoAWheelie · 04/08/2023 00:36

This comic shows well how this works and how long but simple is much better than gibberish you struggle to remember.

Mine is 77 million years 🤣. By which time, passwords won't be needed.

I've never seen this chart btw. It's just lucky that I was asked for a word of such length, with both lower and uppercase letters, numbers and a special character. I use that for most stuff now, which I probably shouldn't do.

When asked to change the password I just move it up to the next number. This is annoying because I don't have the time or energy to sync all my passwords.

maddening · 04/08/2023 00:56

77m years for me - I use sentences or a phrase rather than one word with mix of caps and lower, numbers and a symbol - current is 16 digits

larkstar · 04/08/2023 00:58

I also use Bitwarden -
https://bitwarden.com/download/

it's totally free - I use it on an Android phone, an iPad, a Windows 10 laptop and a Mac Mini M1. I don't know any of my passwords - they are all very long randomly generated mixed characters, cases and symbols and are stored in Bitwarden which offers to fill in the correct username and password when you go to any login page.

If you go to www.haveibeenpwned.com and enter your email addresses you will most likely see that one or more have been stolen from website with poor security - LinkedIn was breached a couple of times and millions of email addresses and passwords were stolen. One of mine has been hacked 6 times on various sites that simple don't use the same level of security as my bank for instance - so password/emails get stolen from sports and fitness sites, online shops, music sites, etc.

Seriously - I think people are idiots if they use the same password on more than one site. It's peace of mind never having to remember passwords.

Have I Been Pwned: Check if your email has been compromised in a data breach

Have I Been Pwned allows you to search across multiple data breaches to see if your email address or phone number has been compromised.

The other bonus is that all my and my wife's passwords are all in one place - if I die my wife has access to all my accounts (it's a plus that she has access to everything anyway) - my adult children also know about the use of BitWarden so could assist my wife if necessary.

Greenfree · 04/08/2023 01:02

Yeah mine would, it has too for work or it doesn't let you set it as a password!

VinEtFromage · 04/08/2023 01:02

But but but... most places ask for password and only give you x number of spaces & make you include xyz (capitals/LC/symbols/numbers so you can't choose an 28 place password?!?!

Useruser0912 · 04/08/2023 01:07

1 minute if using a website that allows me to use just lowercase. Although my lowercase password has numbers too but there isn't an option for that on your diagram.

3 years if it's a website that won't accept that password and makes me use uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols.

smooththecat · 04/08/2023 01:11

I use the Apple passwords/keychain as all my devices are Apple. I think it would fit the 1m years, but a few websites won’t allow passwords that good.

smooththecat · 04/08/2023 01:12

Sorry, it’s actually 26 Trillion
